Pelfrey with an ugly start to this game. Everything is either low, outside, or straight over the middle.
Never really got why people were treating Pelfrey like a sure bet this year. He's still a one pitch pitcher. It worked for a while last year, but nothing's changed. If he isn't controlling that sinking fastball, he's up the river Fuck.
Don't really get it either, it's not like he was dominant last year. Even when he was going great it's not like he was striking more guys out. His control improved a little and batted balls seemed to be finding gloves. Not exactly the best model for sustainable success.
There's the hitting with runners in scoring position. Attaboy, Beltran. You can't give much credit to a guy who gave up 4 runs in 4 innings, but here's a little bit to Pelfrey for keeping it together after that monstrosity of a 1st inning. Still a whole, whole lot of baseball left, though.
interesting play there. looks like the mets got the proximity call at the plate although i'm not sure votto got tagged before he got his hand in. nevermind, great block of the plate there with his arm by schneider
Nice play by Castillo. As to the comment above, it's true that the balls found gloves more for Pelfrey last year than in his first two years, but that was because his numbers started out ridiculous. His BAbip last year was .307, which was still above the major league average; it was .337 in 2006-2007, so he was pitching in ridiculously bad luck. His OPS against last year was .734, which is 25 points below the league average of .759. He wasn't dominant last year, but he was above average.
Hopefully he gets the boot rather than O'Day when it comes time to add Livan to the roster. Really wouldn't like to risk having a shorter bullpen while there are still very legitimate concerns about our starters' ability to go deep into games.
