    The Way We Hear It
Cutler trade shakes up the QB picture in the first round
    By Nolan Nawrocki - April 2, 2009

The announcement that the Denver Broncos had acquired the Chicago Bears? first-round pick in this year?s draft could change the landscape of the first round significantly ? most specifically as it relates to the three elite QB prospects, placing a higher premium on the QB position. Now that Detroit is officially out of the Cutler sweepstakes, it is expected that the Lions will begin opening up negotiations on a contract for Georgia?s Matthew Stafford, the most physically gifted passer in this year?s draft and easily the most comparable to the highly coveted Cutler, who was clearly viewed by some teams as less of the problem than a brash, 32-year-old head coach who believes his system is greater than any talent. With a quarterback occupying the first spot in the draft, the demand for the remaining two high-end talents ? USC?s Mark Sanchez and Kansas State's Josh Freeman ? could escalate considerably and shape the draft very comparably to the way it unfolded in 2006, when Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler were drafted consecutively at the No. 10 and No. 11 slots. Despite the acquisition of Kyle Orton, the Broncos still could be active players in the QB market and stand to seriously entertain a quarterback with the No. 12 overall pick.As a result, the Buffalo Bills? No. 11 overall pick suddenly becomes a hot spot and is likely to receive a lot of interest on Draft Day, the same way the St. Louis Rams? 11th pick did three years ago when the Broncos sought to move up to secure Cutler.

If Sanchez impressed any number of decision makers in attendance at his pro-day workout Wednesday enough to be drafted in the top 10, the QB-starved New York  Jets  could become major players to leapfrog the Broncos at No. 12, as inside sources contend that their eyes are locked on Kansas State's towering fireballer. The way we hear it, the Bears initially had offered their first- and third-round picks to the Broncos, along with Kyle Orton, and were forced to up the ante Thursday after the Washington Redskins and Cleveland Browns each came close to working out trades that could have played a game of musical chairs at the QB position. With the Bears now out of the QB derby and the first round, the hot spots for the QB position have become even clearer, as both Cleveland and Washington now have to be considered potential landing spots for passers in the first round. With more than three weeks to continue maneuvering, it is still possible that Jason Campbell and Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson could wind up in other cities prior to the draft. The Browns, at No. 5, now can be expected to take an even closer look at Sanchez, as well as the Redskins at No. 13, should a quarterback still be available.

With a decision needing to be made on the long-term prospects of Campbell in Washington, and the Redskins clearly not giving him a vote of confidence with their strong trade attempts, it also opens up the possibility for the Redskins to become a player to trade up in this draft to secure a passer. The Rams, with Marc Bulger appearing shell-shocked last season, appear set on improving their blind-side protection after releasing Orlando Pace, despite the presence of Rams GM Billy Devaney at the USC pro-day workout, where he was closely eyeing Sanchez. The Seahawks, after Matt Hasselbeck struggled through an injury-plagued season, completing barely 50 percent of his passes, also have shown up in full force at the QB workouts of the three elite passers in this year?s draft and also could be in the market, despite some sentiment in league circles that they are feigning interest to move out of the top five.

The Jaguars could consider a passer at the No. 8 slot after David Garrard struggled last season, as well as the 49ers, who have the greatest uncertainty under center with neither Shaun Hill nor Alex Smith having ever proven to be a solid starter. However, all four teams arguably are in greatest need of edge protection and/or receiving talent to boost the play of their relatively young quarterbacks, and could be forced to go in another direction.

If history were to repeat itself, the Niners, at the same No. 10 spot where the Cardinals drafted former Trojans passer Matt Leinart in 2006, would select Sanchez, in line with league sentiment growing stronger that Sanchez will not escape the top 10.

not freeman... what the fuck. He's a lesser version of Culpepper, and the Jets don't have a Moss to make him look great.

his footwork blows and his biggest red flag is decision making.... decision making is the mental aspect of the QB position which is the most important. And he fails at it? Fuck. And if they are trading up for Freeman thats a double dick in the ass. Losing picks for a cannon arm and mobility.

I will pray for a smokescreen.

    How Cutler-Orton trade went down

~ ~ 3. The Jets were never in it seriously -- true story. New York is either convinced that Brett Ratliff or Kellen Clemens is its guy, or the Jets think the New York spotlight would have been too white-hot for a rabbit-ears guy like Cutler to handle, or they didn't want to pay two first-round picks for Cutler after giving a third for one season of Brett Favre. I just know that the Jets never made a remotely serious offer for Cutler, much to my surprise.

I seriously doubt Freeman goes before 17.

If he's there, we should take him.
