Hey guys I haven't been on for along time, and I wanted to get a feel if I am thinking right. As of today, our team only has a few question marks on paper. I would say that our biggest question marks are WR, RB & QB. Currently our only starter is Cotchery, but we have a couple of bright lights in Stuckey, and Clowney. I really love Cotch, and believe he can be a #1 WR now that he is out from Coles? shadow. I like a lot of things that Stuckey did last year, and believe he will continue where he left off. So that leaves Clowney, I don?t really know much about him, but from everything I get from from some other forums is that he can be a field stretcher. I would say that we have all the elements that we need at WR as we have our #1 reliable possession WR with above average YAC ability, our #2 burner to stretch the field, and our #3 slot receiver also with above average YAC ability. You throw in our depth at WR, and I say we are set. Can we upgrade at WR, of course. I believe that if we could get a steal in Matt Jones, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and former 1st round pick. He is coming off his best year in 08, and should come relatively cheap. He has size, speed, and can catch the ball. If he screws up again, you can his ass, and move on. If he keeps his act together, what a weapon. I would go as far as putting a behavior clause in his contract. How can?t you take the risk, at 6? 6? 247 lbs, and a sub 4.40. (combine results) Unfortunately, we have an issue arising with Thomas Jones. He had a career year last year, and He feels he needs an extension. I am a huge fan of what he did for us. Also, Leon Washington is looking for more money, and I don't believe anyone would disagree that Washington will get his before Jones. With that said, what do we do with Jones. Make him play out his last cheap year with us, give him his money, or move him. In my opinion, the biggest debate on this forum has been if Clemens, Ratliff, or Ainge will be able to lead the offense. Given the choice, I would have made a move for Jay Cutler, and I am a huge fan of Clemens. I looked at it like this. Our team is almost complete on paper, and seeing a we could have picked up a pro bowl caliber player that is almost the same age as our 8 game starter it was a no brainer. I believe that in an open competition we will have our starter, and any of the three will be to MANAGE our offense. I feel our most immediate need however is DE. I believe that DE is the hardest position to draft for 3-4 base defense. Ellis and Coleman have done an great job, but are getting older. We need to get a good development player. The FO has done a good job over the last 2 offseasons of building our team. Primarily our defense, which to me is the most important aspect of a team. However, we need some young depth on the OLine and DT, and that should be addressed #17 ? DE Jarron Gilbert (I have been all about Tyson Jackson since the last draft, but don't get the same vibe from him. I wouldn't mind takeing him here also). I am really just going on position, and feel he is the best player available for that position. I would take which ever player fit better here. In a couple of mocks I have Evander Hood here, but the more I think about it Gilbert would be the pick. However, it may be a reach. Do you think he would be at #52. I would love to know if there are any other DT/DE that would be a better fit. Please Advise #52- WR Ramses Barden ? I know you guys think this is a reach, and we could potentially get a better player here. What can I say, this kid excites me. Tall, decent speed, and absolutely huge hands. Apparently, his route running is bad, but that can be taught. I don?t believe he makes it to our 3rd round pick. He would round out a solid WR core for years to come. I would love to know if there are any other WR that would be a better fit. Please Advise. #76 ? OG Kraig Urbik ? We need depth, and he should help with it. #115 ? ILB Jasper Brinkley ? If he didn?t get hurt, he could potentially have been a 1st round draft pick. He is a stereotypical ILB, and should provide excellent depth. I am guessing this would be a reach at #115. #193 ? OT Lydon Murtha - I don?t know, if Callahan has any clout he will be a Jet. He is a Nebraska tackle that blew up some combine stats. (not that means anything) #228 ? RB Ian Johnson ? Running back on the rise. Decent Size, Strong, and Fast he could provide nice depth. I wanted to use the picks we have and not trade, but I would really love to trade down with Cleveland for there 2nd's. In which case I would still take Gilbert 1st(2nd), then Rashad Jennings 2nd(2nd), Barden 3rd(2nd), and in the seventh Graham Gano K/P. If something like this is possible we trade Thomas Jones, and 2010 conditional for a 2009 3rd, and pick up Dorell Scott, DT Clemsen for DL depth. Thoughts, and advice? Thanks in advance
^ like your thinking, and I like the Scott trade idea. He's one of my favorite mid round picks in this draft.
This Gillbert love affair is confusing. He's a good prospect, but he's not a middle 1st round pick. 17 is a spot to land a great prospect which fell out of the Top 10-15. Not a spot to reach for a guy who could be had early in the second round. If Tanny/Rex want this guy, they won't take him at 17. They'll make a trade. There's still no indication that Gillbert would go anywhere before the Steelers at 32.
yeah i understand your confusion...but I totally disagree Gilbert is really all that he is to athletic to play with guards and to strong to play with tackles, I really think he could be a difference maker Just to exemplify how strong he is there is a video on youtube of him jumping out of the pool underwater and landing cleanly on his feet...those are some set of legs In terms of the mock my only concern is the third round choice, I see drafting for depth but I would rather go with a DB or RB with that pick, other wise everything else looks solid
not a bad , your definitely on the right page thinking. However, with the number 52 pick, I would love to see us get a guy like a Robiskie. He'll be NFL ready from the start. I love Barden, don't get me wrong, but there will be some wide receivers sliding down to us when we pick at number 52. Nicks and Robiskie will probably be on the board. I love the Jasper Brinkley pick in the 4th. In the third though, I like Andre Brown at running back. or the best running back available. Andre Brown is 6 foot, 230 lbs and is definitely quick for his size. He's ran a 4.37 at NC State, and has nice body strength with 24 reps on the bench, and a 37 inch verticle. This kid will give us good depth, and hopefully take over TJ's spot in a couple years once he gets some NFL experience in him.
If we weren't trading up for someone like Raji, I might like the idea of trading down in the first round together with a package of perhaps our 4th and 5th round picks in exchange for another well placed 2nd round pick. I think we might land either Gilbert, Moreno (or perhaps Barwin or Pettigrew) at the latter part of the 1st round and then pick up the best available combination of Shonn Greene, Barden, Brace and/or Hood in the 2nd. Barden could easily be gone by the early 2nd but he could also last into round three as well although I doubt it. If Barden is gone in the 2nd or 3rd, I like Knox as a possible later round WR pick. Many may consider Greene a reach in round two but I think he's tailor-made for what I believe our offensive scheme will be.
While he is a good prospect, it's tough not to classify him as a workout warrior who's shooting up draft boards due to factors other than on field production. He's a big risk at 17 no matter how you look at it.
I dont see how he is a work out warrior, I think he did well I dont think he is a Vernon Gholston or Brian Orakpo. He helped himself because of good workouts but I think his film speaks for itself. Like I said, his workouts have helped his status but its not the reason many believe he could be a first rounder
Gilbert was great at San Jose State - he's not a workout warrior. He didn't earn WAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year because he has a good vert.
The best drafters draft for best value. Not necessarily position. When there's no chance that a player comes off the board before your pick, you're not getting the best value.
There's no such thing as "no chance" on draft day - anything can happen. If you base your draft board off of players being a "lock" to be there at certain picks, you are in for a disappointing and frustrating day.
Why is it many people here love Gilbert as a 1st rounder while on many mock draft sites he falls to bottom 2 or early 3 round? I'd like to take him but not at #17...
Well hopefully they do. Haha, I really just don't see it happening. We'll find out soon enough. If Jarron Gillbert is a Jet, it won't be because we took him at 17.
he is not a big name, so even though he has quite the collection of accolades since he is still fairly unknown people put him lower, I think he is mid 1st-super early second player. If the Jets were to some reason pass on him in the first and get someone like Moreno, and if Gilbert fell to us. I think I would have just died and gone to heaven
I agree about the RB. My mock is using our picks, and not having the option to trade. However, if at all possible we trade down with Cleveland for their 2 2nd's so we could get the picks in my mock, and also a RB. Rashard Jenning's/Shonn Green
OK, then the Giants. I can see them being interested in DHB, or some other WR, or some other postition entirely. They don't have as many needs, but fulfills the purpose stated previously.
I'm starting to think Jarron Gilbert is this year's Vernon Davis, everyone gets so excited about the physical freakishness they forget to check if he can actually play football.
