COACHing dept. : " Sutton Settles In with Next Important Role " ~ ~ ~

Good read on Sutton, and this should help those that wanted to see him gone understand why he's still with the team. I know I am one of them that was lobbying to have him canned. Could be I was wrong about him. If Ryan feels he's useful and can serve a purpose I'm willing to wait and see how it all pans out.

Sutton seems to be a good soldier--but he is not a leader. If one is explicit with him about what needs to be done, he can probably accomplish it. But if it takes any ingenuity at all, he fails. I do not like the idea of him being in any position of authority.

Guys like him make good secretaries. I'd feel comfortable if his role was to do the copying and making sure the coffee supplies are available.

 

I think you are being a bit hard on the guy. Perhaps there are just certain roles that he's not a good fit for. HC and DC I would probably have him off those lists. But as the LB coach whose been here since 2000, I don't see where that unit has been woeful.

I kinda had hoped he would vanish too, but after reading some articles on him I have come around to realize he may be positive asset here. I really believe that by keeping some of the previous assistant coaches around, it will allow us to be competitive this year and ease our transition. Rex is a bright guy and I cant imagine him keeping Sutton here unless he really believes he can do the job.

It never hurts to keep a guy, especially someone who has experienced the history that Sutton has, if for nothing else to have some connection to the past and to the players and what has gone on. There is value in that alone. If he can also be productive in coaching position that is going to be another bonus. I'm hopeful some good will come of it.

 

You're really going to let the LB coach be the "symbol of the franchise"? Let it go. We have much better guys actually making the decisions. Just let Sutton stick to telling guys how to wrap and tackle which he actually is good for, and Ryan and Pettine will get them to play with fire and rip Lynch's, Brady's, Brown's and TO's heads off.

 

I hate everything about Sutton

 

Mangini was the general. We see what a paranoid control freak he was when he was here. If Rex feels Sutton adds something to this staff that's good enough for me.

 

People that hate Sutton don't know the first thing about football. That defense last year was not Sutton's it was Mangini's. This guy hasn't stuck this long through 4 diferent head coaches because he sucks. He is a good coach. He always has been a good coach, but far too many clueless Jets fans blamed him when it wasn't his fault. Sutton never was a DC that had a free hand... he had to follow every order Mangini gave him.

Ryan, an ex-LB coach himself keeps Sutton. What the F dies THAT say about the idiots who blame Sutton? Ryan could have gotten Brian Cox... instead he kept Sutton.

The Sutton haters are classic clueless fans that have no clue. Thankfully, those same clueless people aren't making Ryan's decisions for him. Sutton is here because he is a good coach.

 

I wouldn't trust this hump to feed my dog, let alone coach the LB. He'll turn them all into flaming homos with his 3-8 defense and fetal position type attack.

Maybe you aren't familiar with TBJ's posting, but I wouldn't exactly call him a sunshiner.

If anyone were the sunshiner here, it would be me. lol But think about it - 4 other head coaches he's served under. Mangini and Edwards - ok, most don't respect them. But then you have Groh, who was put in place by Parcells, and Parcells himself. Call me crazy, but Parcells generally does a very good job of putting together coaching staffs.

That was the quote that I was most happy to read. I can't wait to see some creative schemes on D after last year's pussyfoot playcalling.

 

I hope this means that Sutton has been reassigned to the janitorial staff at the Meadowlands.

 

Sutton Was Mangini's DC Stand-in Surrogate...

Sutton has never had a problem going from high or low in his career. He is just devoted to coaching football. This is my take, reading his extremely varied cv.

Mangini didn't want to be his own front man on defense, but he wanted his own defense to be run. Sutton already had rapport with the players and he was a loyal soldier for Mangini.

Perhaps, through all this surrogate micro-managing of the defense, Mangini became his own worst enemy.

I say this because if there were more independent voices being listened to about defense on Mangini's CS, then (a) Mangini's original 08 strategic mistakes might have been noticed sooner, (b) there would be a tough mind that might have successfully defended the DBs' own ad hoc adjustments to Mangini's obviously not-working defense. Instead Mangini was able to quickly shut the players' adjustments down; and then (c) the massive revision of all the DB strategies in the middle of the season might have been phased in over more time, instead of during a single week between games.

Limiting his focus to linebackers returns Sutton to perhaps his greatest most consistent strength position -- just like Callahan going back to coaching the offensive line where his true talent apparently lies.

I think all these NYJ HCs have liked and trusted Sutton because he seriously deserves it -- the fact that so many HCs have reached the same conclusion about the guy is telling, in my mind.
