If a mock draft is hard to make, a re-draft is harder. It was hard to imagine what teams would do then to fill needs but also value the future talent of the players. I sort of bailed on alot of the needs of the teams going into the draft and focused more on talent. In some cases the picks work out, other times maybe not as much. Its my first time doing this try not to kill me. 1 Houston Texans- Mario Williams (Mario Williams) I thought about a QB, but the fact of the matter is the Texans got the last laugh with a beast of a Defensive End 2. New Orleans- Mathias Kiwanuka (Reggie Bush) Controversial for sure, Kiwanuka has played most of his career at linebacker in a 4-3, not Defensive End. He played DE and put up good numbers considering it was his first year full time at the position. Personally, the Giants probably could have kept him at DE and seen his sack numbers continue to go up. 3. Tennessee- Jay Cutler (Vince Young) No one liked Young from the beginning and Culter is so way ahead of the QB?s in this class, it?s not even funny. 4. New York Jets- Haloti Ngata (D?Brickishaw Ferguson) Tough call, but Ngata is a great NT, and probably would have fixed a lot of our Defensive deficiencies earlier in the Mangini era. 5. Green Bay- Antonio Cromartie (A.J Hawk) While Cromartie had an off season, he is still is one of the best corners in the league. Even though the Packers had one great season with Woodson and Harris that turned out to be an occurrence. 6. San Francisco- Marcus McNeill (Vernon Davis) San Fran?s O line has been terrible and Vernon Davis is so bad it makes people want to pull down their pants. 7. Oakland- DeMeco Ryans (Michael Huff) Solid Linebacker could have worked well with Kirk Morrison 8. Buffalo- A.J Hawk (Donte Whitner) While Whitner has worked out decently, the Bills could have probably could have considered a Linebacker with this pick, Ernie Sims was another option. 9. Detroit- Ernie Sims (Ernie Sims) If someone told you that Matt Millen made a smart pick, you would be surprised. Sims is the best Defender on the team, which doesn?t say much about the Lions Defense. 10 Arizona? Maurice Jones Drew (Matt Lineart) First big mover, Jones Drew can flat out play even in a down year he had double digit TD?s, plus Lineart is a joke 11 Denver- Tony Schefler (Jay Cutler) I know Schefler is on the Broncos but how the hell was he the fifth tight end take. Schefler can flat out play. 12. Baltimore- Brandon Marshall (Haloti Ngata) Baltimore lacks a wide receiver; Marshall is the clear best of the class and one of the best in the NFL. 13. Cleveland- Reggie Bush (Kamerion Wimbley) Jamal Lewis is not the answer and the only reason Bush falls is because of durability and toughness, still better than anything the Browns had and probably better then what they have now 14. Philadelphia- D?Brickashaw Ferguson (Brodrick Bunkley) Ferguson is not great, but he is good and gets the job done. Besides Philly needs all the O line help it can get 15. St. Louis- Jonathon Joseph (Tye Hill) Corner for Corner, Joseph is actually not to bad when he is healthy 16 Miami- Marques Colston (Jason Allen) Ted Ginn finally had something of a breakout season, but Colston has already proven himself. 17. Minnesota ? Chad Greenway (Chad Greenway) I thought of changing this pick, but Greenway just put up quite a monstrous season 115 tackles and 5.5 sacks, very nice numbers for a strong side linebacker. 18. Dallas- Donte Whitner (Bobby Carpenter) Dallas has a mess at safety, while Whitner is underrated as a safety, probably doesn?t put up the numbers but still a solid safety 19. San Diego- Davin Joseph (Antonio Cromartie) Joseph is an established right guard; San Diego could have used the help down the line when some of their interior linemen started to break down 20. Kansas City- Joe Addai (Tamba Hali) While Larry Johnson was productive at the time, long term Addai was slightly banged up and did not get as many carries thus leading to a reduction of yardage 21 New England- LenDale White (Lawrence Maroney) White proved in 2007 that he can handle a full load if necessary, Maroney has durability concerns, he would be higher if he stayed healthy 22 San Francisco ? Owen Daniels (Manny Lawson) A real tight end, Owen Daniels is another really underrated player in this draft. Part of this has to do with the fact he plays for the Texans 23. Tampa Bay ? Santonio Holmes (Davin Joseph) Aside from Tampa?s continuing QB mess is the WR mess, despite some good things from Galloway and Bryant, Jennings is to good to pass up 24. Cincinnati- Nick Mangold (Jonathon Joseph) Sorry Jet fans, but Mangold does not reach us, considering that he is one of the top centers now an Cincy needs a Center, he?s off the boards 25. Pittsburgh- Greg Jennings (Santonio Holmes) This draft seems to have a nice crop of great receivers, with Holmes, Marshall, and Colston off the board Jennings is the next best. 26. Buffalo ? Thomas Howard (John McCargo) As much hate as the Raiders get, they actually do draft some quality players Howard is not great, but he is a good Middle Linebacker 27. Carolina ? Anthony Fassano (Deangelo Williams) Anthony Fassano was a second round draft pick who did nothing because he played with Jason Witten, and then he went to Miami and caught 7 TD?s 28. Jacksonville- Eric Winston (Mercedes Lewis) Winston has developed into a solid right tackle, as of now the Jags need a tackle 29. New York Jets- Leon Washington (Nick Mangold) Despite losing Mangold earlier, we still get Leon who is a great 3rd down back, good receiver, and amazing kick returner?and I have such a huge man crush on him I couldn?t have him go to any other team. 30 Indianapolis- Dwan Landry (Joe Addai) Landry was putting together some nice statistical seasons until an injury filled 2008. Would compliment Bob Sanders quite well 31 Seattle - Deuce Lutui (Kelly Jennings) The team has not been the same since Steve Hutchinson left 32. New York Giants- Devin Hester (Mathias Kiwanuka) Something of a project, Hester?s return ability dropped drastically this past season; hopes are he can become a good receiver.
You made a re-draft of the teams needs NOW rather then 2006. If you make a redraft, you draft it for their needs back then, you have to know their needs back then, and take the better players for their needs.
rhodesfan, antonio cromartie is far from one of the best corners in the draft. The packers love AJ Hawk. What is the point of this redraft? Debo is absolutely right. You definitely draft for needs back then. If we didn't draft DBrick, we would of got destroyed at left tackle, and at center. Both of those picks were great picks for the Jets. I don't understand your logic at all. If we grabbed Leon Washington in the third round, why would we draft him in the first? This is a dumb thread, it makes absolutely no sense.
sorry If I didnt make this a little clearer, I made the draft with more intention being on how the pick panned out and the needs that developed down the road I valued talent above need for many of the picks
No way cromartie gets number 5 pick..he is far from one of the best corners in the leauge. His high interception year in the 2007 season makes him seem better then he is, he gets beat all the time.
How does Mangold make it to #24 in the re-draft? Thats what I want to know. The way he has played, he should go Top 10.
I hate analysis like this. It suggests that since certain players have had success in certain systems and under very specific circumstances, than those same players would have been successful regardless of which teams they played for. That is false. Marcus McNeill probably would have looked foolish on the otherwise porous San Fransisco line. Tony Scheffler wouldn't have been nearly as successful (has he even been THAT successful) catching passes from Jake Plummer for years. Reggie Bush would have been put on IR after week 3 rushing behind that Cleveland line. Antonio Cromartie? Would he have displaced Al Harris or Charles Woodson? Herm Edwards would have been fired immediately for drafting a running back while Larry Johnson was considered the best running back in the league next to LT and Shaun Alexander. And the Jets? Good god, man! We would have Adrien Clarke for a left tackle and god-knows-who for center. Don't be fooled by hindsight. LT might not have been the best back in the league if he had been drafted by the Falcons. Ryan Leaf might not have busted so spectacularly if he had been drafted by the Colts. Dan Marino might not have been the best quarterback in the league if the Jets had nabbed him. Ditto Favre. A whole lot more circumstances come into play to make a player great than just the player.
I love Ngata, but why in hell would we still not take Brick? He was a pro bowl alterenate. He's been a starter at left tackle since Day one. Never missed a game due to injury. Filled the biggest hole in our O-line at the time. Sure, taking Ngata fixes the D line and fucks up the O-line jsut as badly. It was a situation made worse by Mangini not wanting to take a chance on a free agent like Grady Jackson, who while not a "Mangini" guy, would have been a much better option at Nt then D-Rob.
This is all messed up. I would rank the WR's: 1. Greg Jennings 2. Brandon Marshall 3. Santonio Holmes 4. Marques Colston
No way do you take Marcus Mcneill over D'brick, Mcneill is really overrated, he got destroyed in that playoff game against the colts, the chargers are thinking about moving him to RT. D'brick is definitely the best LT to come out of the class right now. Not only that why would you take Reggie bush over leon washington, what he's got more speed, who cares, leon is definitely the better football player.
AAAAAAAA shit I deleted the file with the updated version of this, I copied this from another place I posted this, that was before some changes I made one of which is the Marshall over Schefler also as a side note, the Broncos had a great draft class that year
In his defense, he had Mangold going #24 to the Bengals so the Jets could not get him at #29, but in reality, if 2006 was re-drafted I would think Mangold is taken before #24 overall too. Maybe before D-Brick even.
Thomas Howard is one of the best linebackers in the NFL and his measurables are astounding - 6'3, 240 lbs, 4.4 40 yard dash. In 3 seasons in the NFL he has 302 tackles, 17 PBUs, 7 INTs and 2 defensive TDs. Also Tamba Hali should be in the first round.
He is certainly not garbage. You production goes down when you are a LDE in a 4-3 defense who goes from having one-on-ones against OTs to being double teamed. LDEs in a 4-3 do not usually record high sack totals. Having 8 and 7 sacks in his first two years in the league are extremely impressive for a LDE. LDEs are supposed to be the better run-stuffers than pass rushers and RDEs are the pass rushers because they come from the blindside. I know you know all of this, at least I think you do although I guess it is possible I am giving you too much credit, but I think you are just saying that because I made the comment. If Tamba Hali were on the Vikings (with Jared Allen), the Falcons (with John Abraham), the Bucs (with Gaines Adams), the Colts (with Dwight Freeney), or any other team with a good RDE he would produce like you would expect a stud DE to.
Yeah...his production went WAY down when Jared Allen was traded to Minnesota. Allen was the guy drawing all of the double teams, while Hali had one-on-one match ups. Hali needs someone on the other side, unlike Allen, Abraham, Adams, and Freeney...
