This whole compensatory pick thing really reduces the pain of losing FAs. If Leon leaves and we get a 3rd pick as compensation, the pick, plus not having a huge part of the salary cap tied up in one player, will go a long way to making people forget about losing Leon.

i'd like that too, its apart of the "fortify over fill" philosophy that good teams implement... and he may be the BPA at the time.

make TJ play out the year with his shitty salary and thank him for his time.

as long as there is a replacement for him. Then the cries will be about how he should have never been let go and paid whatever to keep him.

As much as I hate the idea given our team, losing Leon would be the one thing to make me accept the selection of Harvin at #17. Hopefully, with the Cutler saga behind us, we're able to make headway on those negotiations, though.

$4 million a year is hardly a huge part of the salary cap and a 3rd round pick is hardly compensation for Leon Washington. How many 3rd round picks add as much value to a team as Leon? Not many.

Pay the man. We pay everyone elses stars, it's time to pay ours.

^^I don't think they sign a deal before this Austin business is worked out and we're done with FA, but I hope those numbers come through. $4 million a year would be perfect. If we end up signing Austin and giving up a 2nd rounder, it also adds about $500k to our available space. We've got, what, $7 million available not counting the rookies? It may require a strict extension, rather than a new contract, but we should be able to get a deal done this offseason.

^ It would be great if the Jets can lock him up for that amount and he signs off on it. He may want a little bit more tho. Either way, I'm not at all worried about both sides reaching a fair agreement.

Give Leon his money, Tanny will structure the deal in a very cap friendly way that's a win-win for the Jets and Leon

4 years 17M, 9M guaranteed sounds nice for Leon's production.

because Leon made a pro bowl and Ward didn't he may make 18 or 19M with 10 locked in.

    According to KFFL:

    Thu, 09 Apr 2009 11:34:45 -0700
Erik Boland, of Newsday, reports New York Jets RB Leon Washington is confident a contract extension will eventually get worked out. "The main thing that's a positive is we both [his representation and the team] want to get something done," Washington said. "The Jets, they've been expressive about wanting to get something done. I don't want to get into details, but I believe things will work out the best."

Based on this, I don't think Leon is going anywhere.

He has also made it clear that this would not be something to affect his attendance at work outs, camps and such. Like someone else said...he just doesn't come across as having the same mentality as TJ (as an example).

I agree with you, but new agent = :shit:

and (IMO) 4 mil is a lot to pay a part time back.

last year watched 11, and IMO LW is not a every down back.
would love to see him stay at a reasonable price, but would not break my heart if he left. :finssuck:
