Hello Jets fans, just thought I'd point an intersting and different view of the Jets 2008 season.ProFootballFocus is a website set up by a few British fans which aimes to grade every player on every play. The important thing to note is how players are graded, almost every play is graded. So a 10 + sack pass rusher might have a poor grade becasue his run play might be poor (consider how many more runs a DE will see over sacks).Generally impact plays suchs as sacks and INTs are devalued becuse of this. Intelligence is also factored into the grades,a tackle who gives up a sack to a QB who held onto the ball too long won't receive as harsh a grade when compared to a tackle who gets beat off the snap and gives up a sack.I suggest you read the FAQ section about grading before ripping it to pieces. FAQ Grading But enjoy, hopefully this will provide good discussion for another boring offseason day.I post on the same message boards as the guys who do this and know they spent a lot of time on this,I think it takes between 3 to 5 hours per game which isn't easy for those with full time jobs. Things that I think will surprise people: The top four rated starters on offense are linemen The worst rated start on offense is also a linemen The person who gave up the most sacks is also our best pass blocker Our best lineback is Bryan Thomas? Our best player in the secondary isn't Revis? Check out Leon Washington's ypa between Mangold and Woody Pro Football focus Jets games 2008
That's ridiculously in-depth. Interesting that Coleman is such a good run stopper that it makes up for his being the worst pass rusher in the league.
its cool to see how good Mangold is. all the numbers are in the same range for everyone else and then his rating is completely higher than everyone else.
Coleman looks incapable of getting penetration on any play be it pass or run.But his skill is his ability to get off of blocks. If the play is comming up either side of him then there is always a chance that he'll get off the block and stop the run for a two to three yard gain(which isn't horrible). But i would prefer a DE who could stand his ground and create a ple or drive his blocker backwards.
I stopped looking when i saw Kerry Rhodes get that high of a rank for how shitty he played, I dont need some made up stats to tell me the guy was invisible.. And by actual real corner statistics revis was 2nd int he nfl..
So did Leon not have a return TD last year? Thats what the website shows. Revis was #1 CB in NFL according to the site. http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_...season=2008&pos=CB&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1 And Kerry Rhodes was the best safety in the NFL and was 1.5 times better than the second....? Ed Reed was #6 BTW.
Sorry, this doesn't work. Just looking at the Jets and the Giants you find huge disparities in the overall scores. The Jets were supposedly +144.3 last year while the Giants were +40.3? While the Jets were finishing 9-7 and the Giants 12-4? Stats are only worth something if they correlate with the big picture, otherwise they are just meaningless trivia. I may have read something wrong here in the sheets in which case I apologize, but it looks like a useless collection of bits from this perspective.
Be careful when you compare some of the stats since not every player (or team for that matter) was rated for 16 games. The Jets and one or two other teams were the only ones that were rated for every game. I think the web page states that only about half of the games have been reviewed/ranked.
Bradway and JetsNboys, the site still hasn't finished grading all the games for every team,i actualy have a feeling the jets are one of of the few teams who have all thier games reviewed so far. You'll need to wait for every game to be done to start compairing against other teams.
In the entire NFL: Woody was the best RT by far and D'brick was the best LT. Brandon Moore was second best LG. Mangold was 3 times better center than the second position C. Best WR was D. Mason. Braylon Edwards was #181 lolololol. John Abraham was #1 DE in 4-3. Ellis and Coleman were #4 and 5 respectively in 3-4 DE. Jenkins at #6 NT. Bryan Thomas was the 5th best OLB in the ENTIRE NFL.??? Jay Feely was #54 Kicker? Washington #2 KR. Wow....These are pretty twisted stats. Maybe we can ship BT and Coleman to Denver for Cutler straight up after showing them these stat.
Well there you go. Still having the Giants ranked on 9 games at less than half the Jets score seems really unlikely particularly given that the Giants went 6-3 in the 9 ranked games including blowout wins over the Rams and the Seahawks and no blowout losses. I am going to guess that subjective rankings are a big part of the system and that a Jet fan is a big part of the rating team. That's what makes sense.
Yeah thats what I figured. Coles and Cotchery were the only ones to have started 15+ games at WR in the NFL. So yeah you're right but still...most of the teams have 8 games graded. Also, the overalls are based on how much you played and how well you performed in that time regardless of it being 16 games or two snaps. Clowney was #42 WR, even though he caught only one pass. or maybe 2, not sure.
I like the concept but the site is kind of worthless without all of the games graded for all the players.
Sorry to bump this thread agian but the guys at the site have finished grading every game for 2008.So all the jets player grades can be compared against the rest of the league. Also check out the player partcipation for each game, who was on the field and where they were lined up is listed for every snap bar special teams.
This site doesn't impress me, but lo-fucking-l at this being the purpose of statistics. Really, you think the endgame of high-level analytics is to confirm what we already "know"? Amazing.
Look. all you need to know about this stat system is that it gave the Arizona Cardinals offense last year a cumulative -78.2 rating. It gave their defense a cumulative -67.7. It gave their special teams a cumulative -8.4. So the team that was in the Super Bowl hunt until the last 3 minutes of the season was cumulatively rated as -154.3. The Jets, who never got within a stone's throw of the Super Bowl had a cumulative 100.3 rating on offense. They had a 46.5 rating on defense. They had a -2.3 rating on special teams. So the team that we all saw collapse like wet noodles at the end of last season had a cumulative rating of 144.2. This "system" says that the Jets played 298.5 rating points better than the Cardinals last year as both teams were going out to 9-7 and the Cardinals were winning out to get to the Super Bowl. Any ratings system that shows that wide a difference in actual performance vs subjective evaluation really isn't worth very much as a tool. The Steelers, BTW, sucked compared to the Jets as well. They had a -81.3 on offense and a 139.5 rating on defense and a -18.8 rating on special teams for a cumulative rating of 43.4, clearly they were a worse team than the Jets. The two Super Bowl teams as a whole had a cumulative rating of -110.9. Obviously the Jets were just that much better than both of them. Green glasses. Somebody at Pro Football focus has a huge pair of them on.
