Mike Florio 10-Pack: 10 biggest first-round draft busts of the last 20 years Posted: March 29, 2009 > http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=532971
Bosworth should be there somewhere. If VG has another year like last year, he will get added to the list and he won't be a Jet anymore.
There aren't VG lovers. There are people like myself who realizes it's insane to judge him only on his rookie season. He may end up being a bust, but after one season is a little premature imo.
I still say Leaf is the biggest bust in all of sporting history. VG should have been an honorable mention. He better have a good year or he's gone, guarantee that.
regarding the article, I still can't believe that Blair Thomas turned into a bust. He ran so well during his rookie season. What a disappointment
Im not saying he is a bust but he does have bust tendencies. Hopefully coach Ryan will prevent VG from making the bust list.
Did champ piss on your Corn Flakes this week? All the people who are so intent on us reaching in the draft for a "franchise" QB need to look at this list. Among the franchise-killers: Heath Shuler David Klingler Akili Smith Ryan Leaf Let's not forget Andre Ware, either.
exactly, for the number of "franchise savers" you could name, i am fairly sure, we could name 5 "franchise killers" Don't reach for a Qb, or flat out take a guy because you need one. If he is going to flop, see Alex Smith, your franchise will still be picking top 10 5 years later. Not a good move at all. Only take a guy you truly believe can lead, dont just take a guy because "experts" give him a first round grade. whiffing on a QB sets a franchise back at least half a decade.
Agreed. He can't be labeled a bust, yet. This coming year is the tell-all year. Personally, I would love to see him emerge as a significant contributor to the team.
It is not insane to judge a tackler on his first season. In the old days before 40 million dollar contracts he wouldn't have seen another year if he played for some teams.
The article made a great example of what you are saying in describing Washington's 1994 draft. Despite drafting Heath Shuler #3 overall, Washington got its "franchise" QB . . . when it drafted Gus Frerotte in the 7th round that same year. Teams have consistently found starting caliber QBs in the late rounds or even as undrafted FAs (Brady, Romo, Delhomme, Garcia, Warner, Cassell, Hasselbeck, etc.) and they had better be damn sure they have the right guy before spending a 1st round pick on a QB.
I Like this quote from the article. "But first-round quarterbacks are a 50-50 proposition; for every one that succeeds, one is reasonably expected to fail." When picking a QB you had better be sure of what your getting.
