I wonder when Ryan said he sees the same player in Gholston as he did in Suggs he meant that all it took was to teach them one thing their rookie year - sack the QB. With the reports about Mangini and his schemes, Gholston and his struggles learning the system and thriving in it - I wonder if it was more the failure of the CS to take him in and teach him more than VG being a complete bust. Ryan may understand that this kid needs to taught one thing for an entire year rather than 9 things at once for a whole year. Ryan would do that. He'd teach VG to only attack the QB and nothing else, then bring him along in "maintaining gap integrity" and so on after he masters one aspect of his position. I believe that's what Ryan did with suggs - baby steps. Ryan is also a better teacher than Mangini - no one can argue that. The other side of the coin is that Gholston really is a waste of athletic talent, but I won't believe that until his 3rd complete year shows that he can't play in the NFL at a high level.
Zing! Sorry, I guess I just had a hard time believing an otherwise informed poster (gus) would suggest that, so I subconsciously assigned the thought to a generally uninformed poster (you).
There has been subconscious right through this thread. The guy has been nothing short of being the total professional , so my 'guess' is most likely way off the mark. Anyone for chinese whispers ?
I agree with everything said in this post, but... While I think Cutler may well be the better prospect going forward, and for that would prefer him over Clemens, I think that the Jets would be asked to give up too much for Cutler. But... Going back to the above post, while that is all true, none of it guarantees that Clemens will get it done. Even those of us not down on him, (imo those who are down on his prospects are being unfair and showing a lack of football knowledge) cannot say we know Clemens will succeed. Jus sayin...
Im not sure whats in the tank for Clemens..but the part I bolded above..what exactly does this mean? Anyone thats down on him has every right to be...and it doesnt have to do with anything we have seen on the field. While I agree we havent seen much as far as playing time...since he was drafted in the second round, two different head coaches and our GM have done everything they could possibly do to not play him. They brought in Favre...they have made it known that they want Cutler...they have mentioned Ratlifs name as "one of the two fine qbs we have on our roster". KC has done nothing..not one thing to seperate himself from even our 3rd string qb. Saying people lack football knowledge because they might be down on KC isnt a fair statement at all BB. This org. has gone out of their way to keep him off the field..and you have to wonder why. If he would be the answer...and I mean just an above average qb, that would solve so many problems. It would save this team draft picks..cap space..it has so many upsides that you have to wonder about him...and what past and present coaches feel about him.
If the Jets truly wanted to make sure he doesn't play for them, why is he still on the roster? You forget that last year's move to get Favre worked on a number of levels - it gave the team cover to get rid of Chad, it took press hype away from the Giants who had just won the SB and it was part of a plan to pump up PSL sales. Your list also ignores that in 07 they BENCHED Chad to play Clemens, and had him in there until he got hurt, returning when he could. That alone undercuts your whole post. Following the 07 season, if the Jets were so unhappy with him, why did they have a QB competition? THey could have just given the reins to Chad, as they had before. Your premise that the Jets have gone out of their way to not play him is factually incorrect.
Undercuts my whole post?...because they decided to play an unknown over Chad and he couldnt win the job..and since has never had the chance? Are you talking about the competition he lost so easily to Chad? Here is a second round pick..second..and they have looked long and hard in every place to prevent him from being the qb. I understand what you are saying about the Favre move...I cant see how anyone thinks Ryan, MT or EM, when he was here, thought this guy was a quality NFL qb. I will tell you this. Ryan comes from a team that has never had a dominant qb and that team has won in the past. He believes in great defenses and ball control offenses. If he could get his hands on a star qb, he would...but thats not the end of the world for him. If KC cant win the job with this type of coaching mentality, its over for him here at least. As far as not cutting him? Are you serious? A team can carry 3 qb's on their roster. He was a second round draft pick. What would be the rush in cutting him? That argument makes no sense at all. Hey, for me as a Jet fan...I would love for this guy to rise above his first years as a Jet and become just good...not even great..just good in Ryans system. It would save us a bunch of draft picks if we were to trade for a Cutler..and a bunch of money for the cap..its a win win. Under the above circumstances, if he cant win it this year...he will never win it WITH THIS TEAM. Perhaps whatever hes lacking comes together down the road..like it has for many a qb in the NFL today.
I think KC is our best option. Period. Unless we can get a better QB on the cheap, I'm not down for it. KC has plenty of experience behind a very smart QB and a very good QB. This team is better now, and KC will run this system better on opening day, then anyone we could possibly bring in here. My biggest reason is because I think we really need to build up our team even further in our draft, throwing picks around will only hinder our progression towards (hopefully) becoming an elite super bowl contending team. Just my theory.
Yeah, I agree. He looked so good when he started and he just tore it up last off-season, clearly outclassing Pennington to win the starting job. I wouldn't be surprised if he were a Pro Bowler this year!
Your sarcasm needs some work bro. Kinda lame. You are obviously either... A) Someone who wants Cutler and is willing to give up the farm for him. B) Brett Ratliff fan. What a preseason that kid had, eh? Either way, your entitled to your view, but you got to be kidding me with the, "he looked so good when he started, and he just tore it up last off-season" crap. We all know KC hasn't had a fair chance, who is to say he wouldn't have beat out CP last off season? We'll never know because we brought in, Favre. Nobody said anything about a pro-bowler behind center, most fans just want someone that can manage the game, in hopes that our defense will win most of those games. Who better to manage the offense, without giving up the farm then, KC? To just manage, with hopes of growing into a very good QB. Honestly.. It doesn't sound that far-fetched to me.
As much as I still have my KC doubts..your points are dead on. I totally agree with just about this entire post.
Clemens never lost a competition to Chad. If the Jet FO was so unhappy with Clemens after 07 they would not have had a competition between him and Chad last off season and would have moved him off the team. There was no upside to keeping him if, as you claim, they had already given up on him. There is also the fact that the team seems prepared to go with him now, unless of course Cutler comes to the team. Really, that covers it.
