Assuming Cutler is truly available, the whole decision about whether to take him or not will depend on what Denver is at a minimum willing to take to avoid the dissension factor, and on top of that what other teams may be willing to offer. The Jets are not the only team that could use him, of course. But they might not be in the best position to offer an attractive deal to Denver. Last off season I thought getting Favre was a smart move, as much because the FO imo rightly decided that it had too ambiguous a situation at Qb to summarily bench or waive Chad, but they wanted to go in a different direction. The Favre move was not without its critics even before the late season swoon, but in hindsight the team did fairly well moving on to the post Chad era with the signing of a future HOF Qb providing a substantial bit of the cover. Good. The situation this year is quite different. The team has hired a guy who is explicitly intended to revamp and upgrade the D, particularly pass D, and complement that with a suitable O. Add in that Schott was retained, who must have some ideas of what to make of the Qb's currently on the roster. The team has not made any FA moves for a Qb, to our apparent knowledge, and appeared ready to run a ball control O with one of the current Qb's on staff. Like last year, when the Favre deal seemed to come out of nowhere, we know albeit earlier in the off seaon that the Jets appear to have a shot at Cutler. But Favre cost FAR LESS to get than Cutler would, and the need to cut the Gordian knot at starting Qb the team had last year is nowhere near equivalent this year. Perhaps his price drops enough to the range of reason, but if not, I am fine with playing a Qb currently on the roster. What is the range of reason? With the other holes on the roster, giving up too many picks becomes problematic - this is another problem. But the right package might be worth giving up. I just don't see as a practical matter that the right package for the Jets will be what it takes to do the deal with Denver.
Rumors are the Jets and Tampa Bay are the two serious teams (again)..same as with Favre. Last time Denver tried to trade a QB to TB they retired though.
Valid points? All of these arguments have been made before and there have been strong counterpoints already provided. Hence another new Cutler thread was not needed. And why are his points valid anyway, because it is longer than one sentence? Give me a break. I think his three reason are complete BS anyway. 1 - The truth is nobody knows for sure what offense the Jets will run this year. One of the selling points to keep Shotty in NY was to give him full control of the offense and let him put his spin on an offense that was allegedly throttled by Mangini. Yeh, I know we heard Ryan state that he was going to have a ball control offense and all of the free agent moves made this off-season suggest that. BUT, to state that Ryan's offense in Baltimore was... is just stupid. Have we forgotten that Ryan was DC and had NO input on the O side of the ball? 2. I got it, don't get a good player from another team if said team had better talent. Yeh, another "valid" point. I can see this discussion taking place. Hey Tanny, Tom Brady is on the block for a fourth rounder, should we call Bill and express our interest? Nah, the Pats had better receivers with Moss, Welker and Stallworth, he wouldn't be any good here. Also, you can not compare Cutler's production with the Broncos to his production with the Jets. That is just asinine. That is like apples to monkey tits. The true comparison is simply who has better a better skill set Cutler or anybody on the Jets roster. The Jets have proven themselves to be in a win now mind-set. If you doubt that you are crazy, why else would they have traded for one-year wonder boy Favre last year? They will not have the patience to sit around a year and take a chance with the guys on this roster if there is a suitable (and cost effective) improvement available. Which brings us to point number 3. 3. I can kind of agree with a little bit of this "valid" point. You don't want to hamper long term growth of the team by mortgaging the future to bring in Cutler. However, if you look at the percentages involved with the first round there is a 50-50% chance that a player will be a bust. Yeh, the Jets have done a relatively good job in the draft, but if you could get a proven player you do it. Yeah it is going to cost something of value to get value. A fact that is never tolerated on this board and easily dismissed as being plain old ridiculous. Should the Jets mortgage the future? no. Should they give up a reasonable amount to get him yes.
Don...do you have a link? I'm wondering if we have the advantage over TB....our draft position in the first round is slightly higher.....plus, we have defensive players that play the 3-4 scheme available for trade. TB has the advantage if the Broncos are interested in that Johnson kid for a potential QB swap.
No link, they were talking about it yesterday on ESPN when the meetings started. I'll see if there is anything on ESPN's site.
This alludes to it but they were more definitive about it on ESPN. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/peter_king/03/17/mail/index.html
That would just put one more unproven guy into the mix with the three we already have. Unless there was a top-notch, Manning-type of QB, in which case we wouldn't be getting him at #17 anyway.
Not exactly the established QB they're looking for, though. Josh Johnson may have been drafted, but he's no more established or guaranteed success than Ratliff.
I really hope Ratliff wins the QB job this year. It wasn't just the long passes he completed in pre-season, I liked his decision-making skills, pocket presence, height, weight, arm strength and he didn't stare down a receiver which keeps the defense guessing. The only caveat is, it was pre-season. It was a surprize though and the guy defintiely looked like he was doing his homework. I think Ratliff has way more raw talent than Clemens ever will. I gotta see him with the first stringers to be sure though. I still say the Cutler trade will fall by the wayside. I saw an article in today's Daily news that said something to the effect that, "Broncos say that Culter is Their QB and their is no interest in Trading". This sells papers today, so tomorrow they can print another article about the Jets in talks with the Broncos and so it goes with sports reporting. It has become just as big a spin as the goverment puts on us.
I agree with every word you said. Something about Ratliff, from 35+ years of watching football, tells me he can play, but we have to see it.
I stopped reading after Valid Point #1: The type of offense Rex Ryan ran in Baltimore? Huh? And honestly, I know what Rex Ryan says. Ball-control, grind-it-out, yadda, yadda, yadda. But if you look at his defenses, I see constant, relentless risk-taking and aggressiveness. I think he'll bring that to Schotty's offense as well. EDIT: I mean, think about it. Ryan saw his superb defenses wasted for years, YEARS, because the Jamal Lewis-led grind-it-out, ball control offense couldn't put 20 points on the board. I think Ray Lewis put it worst when he spoke out about Bellick's offense two years ago: "Just don't lose the game, we'll win it, just don't lose it" or something to that effect. HELLO?! You play to win the game, Ray! An offense built to not lose is an offense built to not win.
This posting problem will never go away until the mods do something about it. They need to take action against people who blatantly break the rules. Otherwise, it's like telling a little kid if they do something they're going to be punished, they do it, and they don't get punished, so they just continue to do it again and again. At the time it was made, the main Cutler post was right below it. The poster ignored it because what they had to say was special. This is indicative of a another societal problem, but that's for another forum. Bottom line, this thread has been here for over eight hours and no one has moved it or done anything about it. As long as that continues people will always flaunt the rules.
35+? So did you catch Super Bowl III or not? I agree with you as well. Watching Ratliff he just looked like he might have it, but I've seen way too little of him to know with any certainty.
Don't you think the offense would be that much better being multifaceted? We could kill you with the run or kill you with the pass. Both play off each other and make the other that much more effective. Rex doesn't have an offensive style. He's never been an offensive coach or had to worry about that side of the ball in his career. Don't you think Schotty will be allowed to play to the players strengths & also have more options then he would by just being one dimensional?
Your avatar makes me want to say something about Jets fans who last saw them win a superbowl but I'm not quite sure how I want to say it.
I hope he wins the starting job over Clemens, but one thing that worries me about Ratliff is his completion % at Utah, 58.3 %. A QB's completion % typically doesn't change much over time. If anything, Ratliff's is likely to take a hit as he adjusts to NFL defenses. Tom Brady's Comp. % at Michigan: 62.3 % with the Pats: 63% Peyton Manning at Tennessee: 62.85% with Colts: 64.44%
I was 9 days shy of 2 when the Jets won the Super Bowl, I'm told I watched it. Regarding Ratliff, anyone can see he has the size and the arm, which is what I like. Clemens has a decent arm and quick feet but maybe too quick. To the naked eye I like Ratliff better, he can only play against who they put him in against. I don't think anyone is saying he's going to the Pro Bowl just yet, but he's certainly worth a look against better competition, why not?
