Gilbert will be moving from 4-3 DT to 3-4 DE - that isn't much of a transition...JG will still get to line up with his hand in the dirt, unlike Gholston.

This guy has the size and athleticism to become the next Richard Seymour.

I wouldn't necessarily knock Gilbert for playing in the WAC. Fresno State, Boise State, and Hawaii all have offensive lines built with NFL caliber linemen.

If you asked me what sets Gilbert apart from Gholston I'd say it's his motor - Gilbert never gives up on the play.

I think Jarron Gilbert is our guy at #17. We can still get a quality WR in the 2nd such as Juaquin Iglesias, Brian Robiskie or who knows, maybe Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt..

Well both were highly productive, so the idea that Gholston was a workout warrior is a myth, and obviously that term doesn't apply to the WAC DPOTY either

Both are indeed changing positions, but almost all 34 DL's in the Pros played on a four man front in college because you see so few 34 schemes at the college level, just as most 34OLB's in the Pros played 43DE in college (ala Gholston), but one big difference would be the DL's are still DL's in the trenches with their hands on the ground while the DE's are now moving back in the front seven to linebacker

Another thing to consider would be that Gilbert has experience at both DT and DE .. Junior year he was mostly an end and senior year he was mostly a tackle, and he has the skills to play both postions because he's big and strong enough to play tackle and quick enough off the edge to play end .. and when you look at his whole package, 6' 6"/290 (easily 300+ in the pros on that frame), everything about him spells the ideal 34DE

Last but definitely not least, leading up to last years draft there was plenty of talk about Gholston's propensity to disappear for long stretches in games .. some scouts flatout called him a dog, someone who has all the talent in the world but a heart the size of a mustard seed, and you will never hear anyone talk about Jarron Gilbert that way .. quite the contrary, this kid has recieved nothing but high marks for his motor, heart and character

the more i hear, the more i love about Gilbert. i was one of the guys who said Gholston was going to disapear in the pros once he got paid, and it seems that has started to be proven...

Can't wait to see Gilbert wearing a Jets Jersey on draft day!

I love Gilbert as a potential pick, I just have other guys ranked ahead of him. If we get him I wont be really upset but if some other players are ranked before him I would be a little disapointed

I wouldn't be surprised if we took Gilbert with our 1st pick, then traded back up into the bottom of the 1st or the top of the 2nd to get the WR we want if Nicks, Britt or DHB are still on the board.

    Probably a 2nd+3rd for a 1st+5th or 2nd+5th

If we sign Torry Holt we might just pass on a high round WR this year because then we'd have Holt, Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey, and Smith.

I don't think we need to jump from 52 to under 30 to land one of those WRs..

I hope someone can help me with this, I know it says Ryan ran Gilbert's pro day what exactly does that mean. I always thought the school's athletic staff ran it in conjunction with the player. Explain?

I saw Kerry Locklin, our new DL coach running BJ Raji through drills on BCs pro day, so maybe Ryan was somehow involved at one point.

I'm starting to warm up to the idea of taking Gilbert at 17 and a big time WR in the 2nd round.

Nicks falling to the 2nd would be ideal, and it could happen. Maclin didn't run that well as he was expected to so Maclin will be falling, there might be a slide in wide receivers. Britt could fall to us to in the 2nd round. Maclin might slide to the late first.

Maclin had a fine pro day. He's still going in the mid 1st.

He ran at 4.47, which is fine, but Barden ran a 4.52 and he's 6 foot 6. I guess we will wait for the draft, but Maclin is not going in the top 15. I guess we will see when the draft comes. Maclin was suppose to be the explosive, burner type of wide receiver, but when a college defensive end runs a 4.42 and Maclin runs a 4.44-4.7 , he's going to lose some some kind of stock. I love Maclin, I think he is a great playmaker, and i don't think the 40 is everything, but 2/10's of a second is a lot in the 40, i'm just saying that I don't think he is going to go in the top 10, which i have where MANY mocks have him. That's just my opinion, I know you like to disagree so we can agree to disagree.

I think Harvin goes before Maclin actually. Maclin wasn't in the top 10 of just receivers in any of the categories at the combine..40, 20 yard shuttle, broad jump, 40 yard shuttle, 3 cone..etc.. He looked fluid, but they were really hoping he would improve his times at his pro day, and didn't.

My question is: isn't this tipping our hand a little TOO much? If we really want Gilbert, haven't we just told everyone they'll have to get to 16 to get him?

Nah not really, an NFL coach runs every pro day and they don't all draft the players they workout

As for showing up, HC's will usually show up for quite a few players they are considering with high picks, at least a half dozen projected first rounders, so you can't know for sure which one he intends to draft, and sometimes they'll draft someone they didn't peronsally workout precisely because they did not want to tip their hand .. so you can't really figure it out based on who the coach works out .. and I'm just talking about the pro days .. this doesn't even take into account all of the prospects who will conduct private workouts for the Jets at Florham Park, all of which Rex Ryan will likely attend

Anyway, I think the fact that Rex showed up for Gilbert indicates that he likes him, but that doesn't necessarily mean he will draft him

For a almost 300 lb guy he is very quick & he gets off of his blocks fast.

I have a question about Gilbert. Why do people compare him to Seymour? His build at 284 is way smaller than Seymour who is way above his recorded weight of 310 and was 295+ when drafted.
