I've got first pick in my fantasy baseball draft next week. It's a 6x6 head-to-head league and offense categories are hits, walks, runs, home runs, average and stolen bases. Can someone talk me out of Hanley or is it a no-brainer to take him?
Most lists I have seen have Hanley #1 and Reyes #2. You still cant go wrong with Pujols though as he will have high numbers for 5 out of 6 categories.
Why would you want to be talked out of Hanley? If he bats third, there are more RBI's for him. Add the SB's and you are locked in.
I'm faced with a similar dilemma. I'm in a keeper league and I have the 2nd pick. My keepers were Corey Hart, Jay Bruce, Alexi Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez and Dan Uggla. Now when my pick comes up either Reyes or Hanley will be there and I'm set at SS, 2B and MI before my 2nd pick. I'd love for the guy ahead of me to take somebody else so I can compensate for Uggla's lack of avg but if Hanley is his pick it's likely Reyes although Pujols has crossed my mind as has Wright. You have to go with Hanley, he is a legit 40/40 guy and will score at least 100 runs and drive in over 100 while hitting .300. It's a no brainer. Reyes would be 2nd but not even close to what Hanley will do.
I don't quite follow. Jay Bruce and Corey Hart were kept, but Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez are available?
It's a 3 year keeper league and the guys become free agents and can be drafted again. Bruce and Hart are in thier 1st year of being kept while Reyes and Hanley have been kept for 3 years.
In my mind it's: Hanley Pujols Wright Reyes in that order. However, I'm picking 2nd in a league and am taking Wright over Pujols. You have factor in the idea that with your top pick, it's all about floor, not ceiling. You're drafting established guys. If guaranteed healthy, Pujols is the #1 player (even with Hanley's SBs). However, for me, I'm willing to take Wright over Pujols knowing that Wright will guarantee me 155+ games. You also know he's going to be a great contributor in every category. Pujols may get 40 points in average and some more HRs and RBIs (no guarantee on the RBI), but the lack of steals and more importantly, the injury risk have me steering clear at #2. I'll take Reyes as a distant 4th after the other 3.
I just finished a draft. It started at 9 and ended at 11:04. I had the 3rd pick and figured my pick would either be Wright, Sizemore, or Reyes. Well, Reyes went 1st followed by H. Ramirez. Pujols was an easy choice for me, especially based on the league's settings.
OK - Seems like I'm going with Hanley. What about on the first turn? How do you rank these players: Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday, Carlos Beltran, Ichiro, Manny, Soriano?
where would you draft Johan Santana? and Utley? in a National League Only draft 5x5, non keeper league?
Soriano Fielder Beltan Manny Holliday And stay far, far away from Ichiro. He is not worth anything more than a mid round pick.
My take - Holliday, Beltran, Soriano, Manny, Fielder, Ichiro. I like multi-tool players. Manny and Fielder won't steal bases. Holliday is getting no love this year. He has hit well outside Coors field. Manny, if healthy all season, could really do some damage this season. I had Fielder last season and was a bit disappointed. Soriano has an injury every year and is streaky. Beltran says his knees legs are healthy. That's good news for his stats. Ichiro, bad team, no homers.
I guess it's the homer in me, but I would take Longoria with my 1st pick. He's going to be the Rays #4 hitter this year (Which means alot of RBI's for Longo here in 09) Our three players infront of Longo in the order are Aki, Crawford and Upton...All three of those players are known for getting on base and that means Longo will have plenty of chances @ bringing em home...I also expect him to wrack up a good 35+ HR's this year. This kid is a superstar waiting to happen and thats the reason why team USA just called him over to join the club, this kid is 4-real.
Please do take him with the first pick. I would be very happy with the 2nd pick in any draft you are in. In fantasy sports you need to put aside your homerism and look at the pure numbers and while I like Longoria and think that he will be a very good player, he isnt even in the top 2 3b's (Wright/Arod will have better numbers this year) at least. Pick him 1st and you will lose your league but as long as you are happy just drafting "your players" instead of winning then so be it.
You make really great points man, I guess Im just expecting a huge year out of Longoria this year because I seen talent in that kid, last year, as a rookie...That I havnt seen in a lonnng time. Alot of fans around baseball say that Longoria reminds them of a younger Chipper Jones (Both started their careers at SS), They both have a great glove @ 3rd, Nice power and RBI men...But Chipper is a HOF so Longo still has a long way 2 go. But your right, I would go with...Either David Wright, Reyes or maybe even Manny? Then snatch up Longo with my 7-8th pick? He should still be there in the long run, great points man. Dont be so confident that A-Rod is going to have a better year now...Longoria put up some solid numbers last year and missed about a month I believe before getting called up and A-Rod is hurt and who knows when he's going to get back to even 80%
Longoria hasn't been drafted until, minimum, the 10th round in ANY league I'm in, and any mock I've seen/done. Drafting him 1 is absolutly rediculous. Do you follow baseball much?
