I think he's a perfect fit for the Jets in every concievable way 1. He perfectly compliments TJ & Leon by adding the one dimension that is missing, a bruising northeast power back who punishes defenders and can really excel in the SY/GL Packages I know some people will say TJ fills that role, and yes, he's ripped and he is a physical halfback, but he is not that big, strong, rawboned, bruising and punishing power-back ala Jerome Bettis or Brandon Jacobs (for example), but IMO Shonn Greene would add that element to our running game immediately 2. Rex Ryan's formula was made crystal clear from day one at his introductory press conference .. the man said very clearly that he wants a physical defense and an all-weather offense, he then went on to explain that his idea of an all-weather offense is a strong running game .. translation, northeast, smash-mouth, power football If you want a model for what Ryan has in mind on defense, obviously you need only look to his own body of work in Baltimore, but if you want a model of what Ryan has in mind on offense, I think you should look at the Pittsburgh Steelers .. and I don't only mean now, I pretty much mean throughout their history .. there has never been any doubt about the Steelers identity on offense, its always been about smash-mouth football in Steeltown, as it was for Lombardi's Packers, and if I heard Rex Ryan correctly and reading between the lines, I believe that's what he has in mind for the Jets on the offensive side of the ball, not that we never throw, but that power-football is our "identity", the thing we can always do well and even if the other guy knows its coming .. I think that's what coach was saying? 3. Lastly, IMO Greene is a skilled power-back and not "JUST" a SY/GL Guy So in the event TJ is injured I think we have a guy who can step right in and carry the load this year as the feature back, while Leon can offer the ideal change of pace ... and if we release TJ following this year (when he is due a huge bonus which makes that very likely), then Shonn Greene and Leon can be a nice young Power/Speed duo going forward .. but in the meantime, like right now and assuming TJ is healthy and on the field, Greene gives us that real forceful presense we currently lack in the running game Anyway, I recently projected Greene to the Jets in RD 2, that projection took a little heat and I never really defended the pick, and I didn't want to bump an old thread, so I just thought I would explain the thinking behind that projection in a new thread and people can discuss the pros and cons if they wish ... and all feedback is welcome, pro and con [YOUTUBE]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrWZwH9VVJU&NR=1[/YOUTUBE] BTW, he should be locked up for what he did to those two DB's at the 3:30 & 3:40 mark .. that was brutal hmy: He sent those guys for a ride, man .. sent them flying :grin: That is what you call a "Punishing Running Back"
I'm certainly a fan of grabbing Shonn Greene. Like you said Jabba, he's a perfect complement to our current stable of backs. However, my only problem is that I personally see him dropping into the third round because of the low demand for RBs throughout the league, so I think we could hold out til then to grab him.
yes, god yes. Watching that highlight film, I was waiting to see CBs get blown up at the 3:30, 3:40 mark and so he kept blowing people up and I'd be like, was that what he meant? No, 18 seconds, was that it? No, 58 seconds, no 1:58, that?, no 2:40. It was exactly what I want out of my running game. And the perfect scenario for a Northeast team. Gold, Jabba, gold.
Greene is my favorite out of all the RB's. But I do love them all. Wells, Moreno, McCoy, Brown, Greene, I hope we draft one of these guys.

I don't know, I'll admit he does look good on film. I heard somewhere that he is like 25 which makes him kind of old for the draft. If he can play god bless him and if we don't get Moreno, Wells, or McCoy god damn I would not be upset if we drafted him
Lol, I responded on JI as well, but just to reitterate my feelings: Greene would be the perfect pick. His fresh legs are a good sign for the future. Just imagine a Shonn Greene/Leon Washington combo?
Jabba - what about a guy already on our roster, Jehuu Caulcrick. The kid was a monster short yard back at Michigan State with 21 TD's his senior year alone. He's build like a brick wall and knows our offense well. What do you think about him fulfilling the role of power back ?
Yeah I think he could probably do a nice job in SY, but unlike Greene there's no long term feature back potential ala Brandon Jacobs, and I think Jehuu is being groomed as a fullback .. Jets are probably hoping he can be a young/cheap option at FB if this is Richardson's last season, and/or someone who can give us a backup at that spot should Richardson suffer an injury But you're right Popeye, Jehuu is a RB by trade and if all you're looking for is a SY specialist with no real feature back potential, then I wouldn't be surprised if Jehuu does a nice job in that role
I wouldn't mind him or Jennings in Rd3... although some people on this board seem high on Jehuu Caulcrick. As long as we have some brutal RB I'm ok with it . With TJ, Leon and a big RB we could have our verson of earth (missing), wind (Leon) and fire (TJ)... hope it doesn't backfire though
Baltimore's leading rusher was Le'Ron McClain, who was an oversized running back that converted to fullback in the pros. Ryan could take that approach - using heavy backs to carry the offense.
Good Point, E .. I forgot all about McClain, but you're right, he sort of surplanted MaGahee as the feature back
I love it. I'm all for picking a RB on the first day in this draft and if we can't/don't get McCoy then the Jets should definitely look at Greene.
That aside, what jumps out at you when you look close, is the guy has tremendous feet. he doesn't lose any speed when he stutters to set the tackler up, and dances nimbly around them. He also does not 'waste' space. so many backs run out into the middle of open space, or right at the tacklers. He uses his feet to nibble the open space away a little at a time...(i.e not running completely away from the defender allowing a clean line for the defender to pursue.The defender is kept tentative as long as possible....)
Or..Shonn up front, Leon in the back....where are the LB's going to go? Thunder and Lightning baby...
Love the YouTube video. Greene is like a bowling ball out there, just knocking over defenders. He can be caught from behind so the true breakaway speed is not there. But he also routinely just smashes guys in the mouth. I could live with that.
