The WAC is the most underrated conference in college football - sure it's a mid-major, but it still has a lot of talent.
I really like Gilbert and there is no question his stock has been on the rise. A solid combine, that crazy You-Tube video was on alot of draft sites....have open people's eyes to Jarron's game. With all due respect to Jabba, who I respect, I don't believe Jarron's stock has risen enough to warrant a pick at #17. If I had to say where Gilbert would be drafted in April......Late Rd 1, or early Rd 2. If Tanny wants to trade down in Rd 1 or up in Rd 2.....I would applaud that move. Gilbert has played very well and against average competition, I wish I could see a larger body of work against a few more higher ranked teams, the WAC is good, it isn't the SEC or Big 12. Jabba was praising Jarron Gilbert back in Jan, long before other's took notice.....kudos' to his keen eye for talent.
The more tim goes on the more I think Jackson won't be our guy. Rex is looking for an animal, someone who is a force at all times when they are on the field. Jackson doesn'tfit.
I'd be really dissapointed if we took Jackson. He dissapears during games and just isn't a game-changing DE. He'll be a solid pro, but nothing more. The pick would be Britt.
He's a solid 3-4 prospect and if Sanchez/Stafford are off the board then im fine with it but i rather go WR in the 1st with either Maclin or Hakeem nicks.
I would personally fly out to Winnipeg and team up with you. Mass Murder Maniacs they can call us....
So who would you take? Do you think a solid 3-4 DE is necessary for us to get in one of the first 2 rounds?
WR or DE are the 2 most probable options in round 1... we might also go RB and i would be ok with that. If we won't Gilbert we might as well trade down.. hopefully someone crazy about Freeman will want to trade up!
I don't know if it's necessary to get one in the first two rounds, but it is necessary to get one or two defensive linemen in this draft. We're more likely to select a better player in the first two rounds...obviously. If you're asking me to put my 3-4 defensive ends in order, here's my top ten: 1. Jarron Gilbert - SJSU 2. Evander Hood - Mizzou 3. Tyson Jackson - LSU 4. Alex Magee - Purdue 5. Fili Moala - USC 6. Ricky Jean-Francois - LSU 7. Mitch King - Iowa 8. Pannel Egboh - Stanford 9. John Faletoese - UC Davis 10. Kyle Moore - USC (...I'm updating my 3-4 prospects thread right now with DE prospects and analysis -- look for it around 3:30 or 4:00 EST)
http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80f4aa52 Tyson Jackson looks good in this interview with Mayock, this would be a safe pick talent and character wise.
Sorry pass anyone from the Wacky WAC has to be suspect. If you want a pass rusher with great upside from a more competitive school draft Everette Brown he is unblockable. We have to hit some homeruns in this years draft the Gholston really hurt, should have taken Mayo or McKelvin.
Everette Brown won't be around at 17 and Jarron Gilbert isn't a "pass-rusher" - he'd be a 3-4 defensive end in our system. "Fans" like you make me sick - you overlook a conference because it's not a Big Six conference - you saw what Boise State did to Oklahoma and you see what Fresno State does year in and year out, competing with Big Six schools - no one wants to schedule these guys because they're afraid. The "Wacky WAC" ??? I may be a little biased because I'm a Fresno State grad, but there is clearly talent in this conference. Logan Mankins, Bernard Berrian, Ryan Clady, Richard Marshall, Marcus McCauley, Davone Bess, Jeff Garcia, and Chris Cooley are just some of the good NFL players that have come out of the WAC. Watch out for this kid: Clifton Smith of the Tampa Bay Bucs -- he made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season as a return specialist...he's supposedly going to take over Warrick Dunn's role in their offense next season. I expect big things from him.
I'd love to see us move down a couple picks in the first and pick up Gilbert then use one of those extra picks to move up in the second (or an extra second if we package a 3rd with a fifth or something) and pick up Nicks or Britt (pro day aside I still think Nicks will be a stud). That would be an ideal draft
I AGREE I reported about Nicks pro day in this forum because I heard something and shared it with you guys, but I put it in its proper perspective, its not good but there is also a whole body of work to consider and in that respect I still think Nicks could be a heck of a player So Yeah, even though I reported that news in this forum, I would definitely be on board with your idea I wouldn't take him at 17, but I'm not opposed to taking him a little bit later
Jackson scares me alittle bit. I'd love to see us go DL in round 1 b/c I think setting the lines as first priority is the key to long term success. But at the same time...I do see alittle lack of explosion at the P.O.A..and when you factor in the atrocious Bench numbers...I get alittle worried. This franchise has had far too many guys who struggle at the P.OA. and get pushed backward into the LBers.
I'd take the 35 snaps a game player at 17, and make do with what I could get at the WR position next.
