http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2009/03/new_york_jets_match_browns_off.html The Jets have matched the one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet the Cleveland Browns extended to safety Abram Elam, the club has announced. The club had signed Elam, a restricted free agent, to a one-year, $1.01 million tender before the Browns extended the offer sheet. Last season, Elam, who took over for the injured Eric Smith, turned into a playmaker. He finished with 57 tackles, an interception (returned 92 yards for a touchdown) and three forced fumbles, including one in a Week 15 game against Buffalo that was returned for a game-winning touchdown by defensive end Shaun Ellis.
Nice. I'm happy about this. I'm assuming Smith is still on the team cause they want to see how the douche will respond in the new system at TC. I'm all for that. If he works out he'll be decent depth.
Nice thought, but hell no. Even if he's here strictly for depth, in the unfortunate event he has to play, I just can't watch him trip over himself anymore. I think once Ryan realizes how slow he is, he's a goner.
All in agreement say aye! The name of the game is making plays. Elam will never be confused with a pro-bowler but he does have a knack for making plays. Good signing.
I think they will trade Elam for a 5th or 6th round pick. To much money for a 1 year contact for a back-up at best.
Or it could be a one year audition for him in Ryan's system to determine if we should pursue a S early on in next year's draft.
Not a great cover guy but a hard hitter with a nose for the ball. Glad we kept him, he could be really good in 46 alignments.
