I don't know if the kid can play football but he sure owns the weight room *************************** Michigan DT wows scouts University of Michigan strongman defensive tackle Will Johnson flexed his muscles at his campus Pro Day in a performance reminiscent of weightlifters Hans and Franz of old Saturday Night Live fame. Johnson bench pressed 225 pounds a staggering 47 times, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com. It's believed to be a record for an incoming NFL draft prospect, according to NFL Draft Scout. The 6-foot-4, 281-pound defensive lineman ran the 40-yard dash in 5.07 and 5.1 seconds, had a 9-4 broad jump, a 4.61 time in the short shuttle and a 7.5 in the three-cone drill. profootballtalk.com
Might be a good guy to pick up on day two for DE depth. Sounds like he could bench an offensive tackle, let alone push him back a little.
DRAFT HIM NOW! FINAL PIECE TO PUZZLE! SUPER BOWL CHAMPS 09-10 Seriously though, I don't know how much a stellar workout translates into a stellar pro game, because of the variation we have seen. He could easily be the next Peppers or just as easily be the next Mamula. Things like this are not really a good indicator of how a player's NFL career will be.
That's alot...but I fail to get the excitement. He WEIGHS 281. So he bench pressed 80% of his weight....No big feat there.... Show me a 200lb back or wideout that puts it up 20+ times, and I find that far more impressive....
Beching 47 reps is impressive, BUT, is he a football player? I see tons of guys at the gym that can lift tons of weight....but don't have the coordination, smarts or ability to play a lick of football. Game Film has much more importance. Some team will fall in love with his numbers and give him a shot. I see plenty of Big Ten Football and he was nothing special. His playing partner...Terrance Taylor is a much more polished football player.
haha too funny I want half of you guys to go to the gym and try to put up 225lbs just 10 times and its a feat 47 is a shit load of times... dont know if he will be any good on the field but he i most definately worth a look... we need a you strong DE
There are tons of wide receivers and running backs that put 225 up more than 20 times. You must not watch a lot of college football, or know anything for that matter. 47 times at 225 for anybody is an incredible amount. It has to be, being that he set the record for any college prospect coming into the NFL. C'mon, let's get real.
Fail, I mean if it was Terrance Taylor then I might be for drafting him (even though I still am) but this guy was never even on the radar to begin with
47 is crazy but it means nothing other than he spends alot of time in the gym and is either barrell chested or has short arms. I'm more impressed by the speed. There was a NT out of Ohio State that put up about 42 a few years ago and hasen't been seen since. That's why I'm shocked at how outraged people are by Andre Smith. He can improve that # easily and it wouldn't change anything.
Guys he hasn't exactly set the world on fire, DeVto is a better player. If you want to look at him in the FA signing period, fine, he's not draftable. A training camp dumpee. Year, GP, Tackles, Tackles for loss, Sacks 2005 10 5 .5 1.0 2006 13 7 2.5 1.0 2007 12 40 2.5 .5 2008 12 29 3.0 2.0
It's obvious the kid spends a fair amount of time in the weight room. That kind of dedication and desire to improve is just what you want out of your backup players. He might never be a starter but sounds like a great guy to fill out a roster, play some special teams, contribute to good team chemistry, etc. I could think of a lot worse.
I have forgotten more about being strong than you will ever know, susie. My point, I will explain, given your limited IQ, was not how he may do it, but that lifting MORE than your bodyweight, is far more impressive than lifting a FRACTION of your bodyweight...and the greater your bodyweight the truer that is. HE WEIGHS 281. HE IS BENCHING 80 PERCENT OF HIS BODYWEIGHT...ARE YOU REALLY THAT F*ng stupid.
it is not a matter of being stupid, or having a good "IQ". Being that I am on the strength and conditioning team for the Rutgers football team, which I have said numerous times which is why I don't give my opinions towards Britt because my opinions are Bias, when you bench 80 percent of your body weight, for 47 reps, it's still impressive no matter how you look at it. From one of the guys that worked with Britt to get 23 reps at 225, I think I know a few things. There were a ton of guys bigger than 280 at the combine, and he out benched them. You don't seem to realize that over the years since they have been recording scores for the combine, there has been lineman of much bigger frames, and they couldn't rep 47 times on the bench. There's a reason why its impressive, because its a record and no one else has done it bigger or smaller.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/top-performers?tabIndex=1 thats just this years. do the research, its very seldom you find a sub 200 guy in the NFL other than cornerbacks, but there are guys on that list that are running backs in 210 range in that put up more than 20. And MOST of the corners put up 20 or more as well. click on there names, see how much they weigh, the majority of people 200 or under, put up more than 20 according to this years combines results. there's your list for you big guy. research...you don't need a high IQ for it either, it's doable for you.
And that is FAR more impressive....than putting up 80% 47 times....AND AS I POINTED OUT THE GREATER YOUR BODYWEIGHT,the less impressive... If you weigh close to three hundred pounds and are blessed with short limbs,it's not that great a feat. (And if you know HOW to bench, it's less so..that the biggest joke about having Lott yell at these guys..he does not even try to give them anything resembling technique...) as I said If i were to go to the basement and try to put up160, I could break 20 cold...big deal. So the guy has recruited a bunch of slow twitch fibres to look good at the combine, when he plays a fast twitch sport..
