Galloway, 37, was part of the offseason roster purge in Tampa Bay after catching only 13 passes in 2008.
This is similar to 1998 when the Patriots brought in a 37-year old speed receiver with diminishing skills. Henry Ellard caught 32 passes for the Redskins in 1997 and only lasted five games and five receptions with the '98 Pates before being discarded. He would go on to play in two games with the Redskins later that season.
Pats are a win-now team getting older doesn't hurt their chances in any way. Probably will be useful for them in some capacity.
Nice signing. Assuming he can be somewhat healthy, he gives the Pats a player who can stretch the field on the opposite side of Moss which makes it that much tougher to just roll the free safety over to Moss on every play, ala, Rhodes with the Jets. It also opens the middle even more for Welker with two receivers stretching the defense. These supposed "old" players are nice low risk nice reward players who don't screw up the cap for future seasons.
Wasn't actually comparing the team's thought process or the roster makeup. Was comparing Ellard to Galloway- both 37-year olds who were very reliant on speed.
I'm really starting to think that the '09 Pats could make the '07 version look mediocre, but that doesn't really mean they're going for a win-now approach. They've signed a very good 28 year old corner while getting rid of an older linebacker and cleared cap space. Their defense is quickly getting younger, and will look younger, and stronger on defense after the draft as they have 5 of the first 95 picks in the draft. Springs, Taylor, and Galloway are old yes. But they're spare parts. What's going to make this team is going to be the d-line, Mayo, Bowden, and hopefully one or two other really solid defensive players picked up in the draft, combined with Brady, Welker, Moss, etc.
Galloway and Greg Lewis battle for a spot on the roster.Expect a first day WR if one falls into early round 2. The CB looks to be not as big a hole since Bodden and Springs signed.Wheatley and Wilhite are the youth there.Expect pick 23 to be a LB if no top WR available at #4 maybe a TE or OL.Trading one of their 3 second rounders for a first next year is very likely.
I agree, it looks like we will be playing a home game as a wild card this year....they did not get older they got wiser...pick your poison, Fred Taylor, WW, RM, JG.
Yes, Randy Moss is extremely talented but, on any other team, no one would be scared of Fred Taylor, Wes Welker and Joey Galloway.
This signing scares me. Obviously he is an ol.der guy who cant seem to stay healthy..but when he's on the field he runs smooth routes and is dangerous after the catch...sounds like someone who does damage in that pats scheme.
Lewis and Galloway give legit targets opposite Moss and Welker. One of them is going to have nice stats this year.
