Trying to construct my mock and want input. First of all it is difficult to forecast what other teams will do so this has some variation. I am a BPA proponent early as I feel grades get much closer later and then you can go BPA that fits a need. I really think someone may drop into our laps at #17. If Det doesn't go qb at one then it may be Sanchez. (I would already be on the phone with them about swapping up from 20 but I am not going to forecast trades). Sorry due to the variation its a little harder to follow. #17 if Andre Smith drops here I take 2 seconds to turn in pick. I know he has man boobs, but he started 3 years in the SEC and dominated. Note he is a true junior, no injury probs and body can continue to develop. I like him to learn a year and be our RT. He would provide true depth. Ryan wants to power run and if any starter gets hurt our line is in deep trouble. He would be first sub at either tackle possibly guard or allow Woody to fill interior spots. Macklin has dropped this far in some mocks again easy pick. Sanchez I really don't want but if no trade takers and he is BPA so be it. If these three are gone my next choices would be the higher ranked of Gilbert DE (tip of cap to Jabba), Nicks WR, or Sean Smith CB/S Utah. Gilbert has been widely discussed as has Nicks so I will skip most of it except that Gilbert has huge potential and could also slide inside in passing situations allowing Gholston to be an end.(Jenkins out resting). WR rarely make major contribution first year though Nicks may be somewhat of an exception and certainly a position of need. Sean Smith is a wild card. Few mocks have him this high and I would prefer dropping back to pick any of these three but here goes.....I like Smith at safety. Coach Ryan mentioned Harris and Scott allow him to disguise defenses and I think a Smith/Rhodes combo would further this ability. He would be great in coverage and many think he could play corner in the NFL providing further depth and protection in case Sheppard doesn't bounce back. In constructing mock drafts I have found late rounds easier because my second and third round really are dependent on previous rounds. Sorry so long but feedback appreciated.
boooooo I Andre Smiths work ethic is so terrible its not even funny, I dont know what you mean that his body can continue to develop I mean once your 23 you usually done growing. Also why would Woody play Guard when we have two great guards? Also as much as I like Smith I dont know if a first rounde pick is necessary for a position we have filled already
Sorry I wasn't clear. If an interrior lineman was injured, Woody could move in and Smith to RT. He also just turned 22 in January so I think he has a long way to peak developement which makes the pick easier. He dominated the best college football players while being younger and less physically developed than many of them.
Woody is a terrible pass protector. and he's 31, and every bit of it. Woody would be a great depth guy as a right guard or a right tackle, considering we would play Andre Smith at right tackle. I know that andre smith dominated defensive lines in the SEC, but i think if we took him at number 17, he wouldn't come in and start for us right away. Rex would have to develop him, get his body ready for the NFL. He would be a great guy to mold for when Woody gets a year or two older, and he can step in and dominate again. However Bama, at number 17 , i would have to see where other receivers are sliding and what the receivers looked like in the second round to pass up nicks at 17. If they slide, and there is a shot at Britt in the second round, I say yeah , gilbert/andre smith at number 17, and britt/robiskie in the 2nd round, is a good start to a draft...but receivers fall again like last year, I'd take Andre Smith in a heart beat.
Jets are going to go WR in the 1st round, I have no doubt about it. I've been saying Britt will be the pick, but, some mocks have Nicks sliding PAST the Jets. I'd think Woody would take Nicks in a heartbeat if he was there.
No. Absof*&nglotutely not. 15-20 mil in the bank, and Manboobs will be Jabba the F**ng Hutt. And instead of feet like Fred Astaire, he'll have feet like Jimmy Hoffa (Cement Shoes). Sanchez is a waste of a 2, a 5, a FA, and 6 combined years of development...for what ? A guy that might be Matt Leinart? or maybe a little better, but not good enough to beat out entrenched opposition? You find the best WR, DT, or DE (IN THAT ORDER) available and be happy. You NEED a true #1, a better than average backup/replacement in training for Jenkins, and someone to push Ellis, Coleman....satisfy any one of those needs in the first round, add two wins to last years total.
In MY order: 0. Mark Sanchez, USC, Quarterback - I don't think he'll be around at 17, but if he is, he'll be hard to pass up. This call will have to be made by the coaching staff, especially if they don't see Clemens or Ratliff as a starter. 1. Hakeem Nicks, UNC, Wide Receiver - Jets' biggest need is at receiver. Nicks is my top wideout prospect - he's the most NFL-ready. 2. Sean Smith, Utah, Defensive Back - Versatility would be HUGE in Ryan's scheme 3. Jarron Gilbert, SJSU, 3-4 Defensive End - Most upside out of all 3-4 ends - crazy athlete for a guy his size. 4. Malcolm Jenkins, OSU, Defensive Back - IMO, he'll be a safety in the pros. 5. Evander Hood, Mizzou, 3-4 Defensive End - High motor guy that's stock is rising.
Alright...I definitely like Hood. I have said it 10000 times, I love Nicks and hope he is our pick with the number 17 selection. If not, Jarron Gilbert 100%. Malcolm Jenkins was a great corner in the Big-10 and in college football, but I am unsure about how he will transition to the safety position in college. I believe he might transition really well, but with the number 17 pick and a number of needs, I'll pass on taking the risk and watching him transition. Sean Smith? Yeah a lot of people have talked about him, but he is the only great safety in the draft, and he's still not ranked that high. Early second round, for the best at his position in the draft? He's definitely not a Landry, or a Mays (the type of hype he would of got), so I'll pass on him at number 17. If were talking about Sean Smith in the corner, I'd much rather have a guy like DJ Moore or Vontae Davis. Instead , to address the DB depth , I really like Chris Clemons out of Clemson in the later rounds (maybe 5th round). Smith has really good size, and from what I've read he will play corner in the nfl, but I'm just not sold on him being a first round pick as a corner. I like Hood a lot, but where do you think he will end up draft wise? His stock is rising, but I've seen and heard that he is fluctuating on draft boards and going under the radar. But, I would take any of these guys over Sanchez at number 17 if it came down to it.
I'm close to the same. 1) Nicks(after him the WR position drops off a little) 2)Gilbert( Probably my favorite 3-4 end prospect since Mario Williams. Yes , I know he plays in a 4-3. Carriker would have been better in a 3-4 as well) 3)Knowshon Moreno-(If Nicks is gone and Knowshon is there, because of the QB situation, we are a TJ injury from deep trouble, I know we can get a decent RB later, but he can be special. Reminds me of Ladanian/Marshall Faulk with the pass catching.) 4)Trade down 5)Sanchez( If others are gone and no trade partner). I like, don't love Hood. I would trade down and take him later, if he were the target.
In Order.........Sanchez would be my fiirst Choice, he's isn't going to make to 17. Hakeem Nicks.......my first choice by a wide margin Malcolm Jenkins Sean Smith Knowshon Moreno
