They have no plans to do it before the draft. The plan is to do it after the season and before '10 starts.
Anything else? Ban you!!! Why on earth would you wanna pay them millions of buck more when you can get an extra yr out of Leon and two yrs out of Mangold? They are still under contract for cheap money, especially Mangold who has two yrs left in him. I don't want them to be resigned before the end of the season, unless the new contract starts after the 2009 and 2010 season. Their rookie contracts are not finished yet. Then we b*tch about players complaining about a new contract. I don't know where we get these pathetic ideas from, but it needs to be stopped. Besides, you created a one line thread...great job...
Look you big dummy or Jets n girls. All the same. Why run the risk of letting them into the final year of their contract and not being able to get them signed. It's called take care of your players. Plus a contract this year would a lot cheaper than next year.
what if they both don't make the pro bowl next year?? then the contract is cheaper. they have to be paid as the top 3 players in their conference due to what they did last year. and why give them a new contract when 09's isn't over? you want to give them more than their rookie salary dictates for 09 rather then paying them what they are making now? Tanny is a genius with the cap, let him work it out. Remember how this year was going to be cap jail for the Jets? They freed up almost 30 million, which would put them in the top 10 in salary cap room. They are down to about 12 million now, which is enough to sign the rookies and have enough free space to make another move if necessary. we won't lose them to FA, trust me.
Your ideas don't make sense. If you wait until a player is a FA then all you can offer him is more money than other teams are offering. If you resign a player before his contract is over you can offer him something no other team can offer him, more money now. Once a player is a FA all teams are on equal footing, before that the player's team alone has the ability to give him more money during the time period remaining on the contract.
a succesful long term strategy says 'lock up your talent'. don't play games and get burned. the INSTANT the team feels they 'struck gold' with a player (rhodes, leon, mangold) look to the future and get them signed long term. a rookie contract should be seen as a time frame to evaluate new kids, locking up the 'good', and parting ways with the 'not so good'. and as 'firemangini ed' pointed out, you can resign your top talent A LOT EASIER now rather then waiting and competeing with every other team out there. it goes like this: tanny: hey leon, i see your going to make $20 next season. i can bump that to $2M if you just sign right here.....(leon knocks tanny over reaching for the pen) tanny: hey mangold, i see your going to make $20 next season. i can bump that to $3M if you just sign right here.....(mangold knocks tanny over reaching for the pen) tanny: hey vernon, i see your going to make $10M next season. it's been nice working with you.
Not sure I understand the hostility of the responses here. I think Washington should be extended this offseason or perhaps during the season. An extension could leave the salary of the remaining year (this year) in place and give the signing bonus which would be prorated for cap purposes over the extended years. That seems sound to me. The same for Mangold, but a year later since he has two years left on his contrct.
Rod has a point. You take the chance and extend them now at current rates and assume they are going to continue to improve. It's a risk either way, but you may save a few dollars in the long run by extending them now and avoiding any problems down the road. Jets and Boys, he is just asking a question, no need to jump down his throat, I am sure you have made some dumb posts here in your time.
One other thing the Jets have concerning these guys is more time than usual to get a deal done. With the owners opting out of the collective bargaining agreement and 2010 being an uncapped year, free agency for the players was moved from 4 years of service to 6 years. Neither Mangold or Washington can be unrestricted free agents until after the 2011 season.
Washington and Mangold should never even sniff free-agency. A playmaker like Washington and an elite center like Mangold are not easy to find. You don't take the chance on losing them, keep your good players in house. And if you think a team struggling on offense wouldn't give up a draft pick(s) for Mangold, if he is a RFA, you are insane. The sooner they are extended the better, IMO.
I don't think its a "dumb" post at all. Rod seems to be taking a long term perspective and there are accrued advantages to signing guys to extensions early on..such as building loyalty to the organization and another, you know better what your budget is going to look like in the years ahead. Also, if you are done in the FA market and have a surplus today, maybe you spend that money today so you can go after a big FA in a couple of years instead of having to take NM's and LW's pay hit on a future cap. From a business perspective, I can see why most of you disagree and I do to since either can get injured this year (may it not happen) but its certainly not an unintelligent post.
this thread is common sense...i hope that tanny realizes the potential of these 2 players...if we dont re-sign them before the draft or sometime during training camp management needs a kick in the ass...hands down leon washington is our most explosive player and mangold is the anchor to our o line..before any rookie signings or anymore FA's we need to re-sign these 2 immediately
I never said let them enter FA, nor did I say wait until the FA to resign them. I was saying we should not resign them to new contracts that start from 09. They should be resigned near the end of 09 or at end of it for a contract that starts from 2010 for Leon and 2011 for Mangold. It just doesn't make sense in this salary cap era to sign a player two yrs before his rookie contract is up. Why pay more than $10 to both of them when they are scheduled to get about $3mil? We can sign another big name player for that extra $7 mil.
