The thought occurred to me that Tannenbaum has a history of trading up in the draft. Revis, Harris, and Keller were all taken by trading up and have all worked out well. With the recent signings we filled a lot gaps and have a lot more flexibility in the draft. We clearly need a #1 WR and Maclin, the best WR in the draft as of now, is most likely gone before 17. With less need on the board does anyone think this is a possibility?
If we trade up for a wide reciever it would not be a good thing. Wr's after qb is the riskiest pick in the first round. You can't fill the wr hole in the draft, it takes most wr's a year or two to develop in the NFL. Jets need to continue building the front 7 on defense and adding depth to the offensive line. The Pats/Steelers/Eagles basically show year after year that having good lines is the key to being good.
The Steelers just won the Super Bowl with one of the worst o-lines in the league, why we went after Komoeatu is beyond me. You can't plug a hole with a rookie WR but you have to bring in that talent eventually. I'm not saying getting a WR in the first round this year will give us an instant SB team but it's worth the investment(Santonio Holmes!) and Maclin is a beast. This is a draft deep at WR and we'd be fools for not considering it.
I don't see it in the first because there's a good chance Jeremy Maclin is around at #17 and even if he's not, Hakeem Nicks will be there. I can see us trading up with our 2nd round pick in order to get a DE such as Tyson Jackson, Jarron Gilbert or Evander Hood.
I'm just saying unless the particular wr is the top player on the jets draft board they should still take the best player available. Yes Santonio Holmes has become a really good wr but it took a long time. And for every Santonio Holmes you can probably name 5 wr's drafted in the first round that were busts. The Steelers were a unique team. Big ben isn't as good as Brady or Manning but neither of them has his ability to improvise. If either of them had the Steelers offensive line they would get killed. You can draft a wr in the first or second round but just expect that the odds are against him being a good nfl player.
We would be fools for considering it. We need depth in a lot of areas. DL, OL, LB and DB can all use additional depth. We need to start stockpiling players. Not trading away picks. The WR talent in this draft is not exactly high end, but its two rounds deep of so/so grades. After Crabtree; Maclin, Nicks, Harvin (whom I greatly dislike as a WR prospect) Darius "Lam" Bay, and Britt could go any where from Late first to mid second. I do not want invest extra picks to get one of them, but would not mind taking Maclin or Nikcs at 17. No need to try and move up for a WR this year.
Maclin isn't the best WR in this draft. Maclin may be available at 17.......but don't be surprised if the Bills draft Maclin. I've stated this many times, this draft from about picks 5-25 are very close in talent and trading up isn't very wise. I believe it will be very difficult from a team to trade down in Rd 1...there won't be many GM's willing to give up draft picks to trade up....since the player's values are razor close. Trading up in Rd 2, seems like a more viable option.
Really? I don't see Buffalo going WR that early. They just drafted James Hardy in the 2nd round last year and still have Roscoe Parrish around to team with Lee Evans. I guess 6th round pick Steve Johnson is a wildcard at WR for them too. I'd be surprised if they didn't go for a DE at that spot..
I've been lurking some other team's message boards and some Bill's Fans feel WR may be an option in Rd 1. There are not many teams between Jax and the Jets that need a WR badly......Buffalo might be the only one that might go in that direction. That's why I feel really good about Nicks falling to the Jets.
I had a dream we traded up with the Saints during my nap this afternoon. I don't know for who, I just heard it and then I woke up.
Most of the players Jet fans are creaming for could easily fall to 17. Both Crabtree and Maclin could be there, especially if one of the teams that picks ahead of us gets TO. I think the only potential superstar in the draft who has no chance of falling is Aaron Curry. So the Jets might as well wait and see who falls.
The issue with guys falling to the Jets isn't about the picks between the Jags and the Jets, it's about the picks between the Lions and the Jags. Seattle, Oakland and Cincinnati could all potentially take a WR. Seattle just signed Housh and the Bengals now have Coles but Housh is 31 and isn't going to be very effective for long. Cincinnati aren't going to get more out of Coles than a stop-gap WR. I know that both have glaring needs at other positions but Seattle could want to get more weapons for Hasselbeck and Cincinnati has a terrible GM in Mike Brown. They've ignored defense for so long and it doesn't seem likely to me that Brown changes his mind anytime soon. Seattle at least has a decent front office which could stop them. As for the Raiders, I don't trust Al Davis to take anyone except the flashiest name and that would be Crabtree, leaving Maclin as the top WR prospect available with Jacksonville picking right after them.
EvaJoe has it right. Trade down - out of the first and pick up extra 2s. The genius of high second round picks is less money for high quality players. The only way you trade up is if you think a true difference maker is there (aka Revis). After Crabtree and maybe Maclin, I am not sure any of the WRs are distinguished...same goes for the DL prospects. I trust Tanny and Rex will get it right.
The best thing they could this year is trade from 17 into the late 30's and get an extra 1st next year and maybe a 5th this year. Every year it seems a team in the 2nd wants to get back into the first and is willing to do this type of trade. Your basically trading one first day pick for two first day picks. I'm not sure that Gilbert will make it to the late 30's but if he did and we got him, plus our other 2nd round pick and then have two first round picks next year. If it turns out that Clemens and Ratliff really don't show any progress the Jets are going to need to get a qb early next year.
I agree with you. You can't trust Oakland to do anything rational and it does seem very likely that Jax goes WR. You could just trade down if both these guys are taken and pick up a WR in the 2nd round. Trading up for one WR might not be popular with some, but if that WR can develop with whoever plays QB then I think it is the right move for the team. Imagine trading up for Maclin or Crabtree and having Ratliff cut his teeth with them at WR. If you want Clemens/Ratliff/Ainge to be the answer at QB you need to give them some weapons to work with.
Cleveland, Giants, Pats And Phins are the only teams with multiple picks in the 2nd. Forget the Phins and Pats. Probably forget the other two too. Cleveland is looking for more picks and the I doubt the Giants feel any need to move up to 17.
I would rather trade our 1st for an early 2nd and pick up an extra 1st next year. Jets are a top heavy team, with lots of big contracts. They need as many cheap players as they can get.
