Version 2.0 Since the acquisitions of Sheppard and Leonhard, obviously our draft priorities have shifted a little. This mock is as our roster currently stands on 3/05/09. Preface: The Detroit Lions select one of the mammoth OT's with the 1st overall pick. M. Stafford is subsequently gobbled up within the first 10 selections and the Jets go on the clock at #17 with M. Sanchez still on the board and know that Detroit wants him bad just 3 picks behind them. Trade: The New York Jets send their 1st (#17) and 2nd (#52) round picks to the Detroit Lions in exchange for their 1st (#20) and 2nd (#33) round picks. So, with the Jets now on the clock at #20: Round 1 (#20): Tyson Jackson - DE - LSU We need help at DE, and Jackson can be an instant contributor. Ellis and Coleman are getting up there in age and their mileage is high. With the free agent aquisitions in the defensive backfield, DE is easily our biggest need on the defensive side of the ball. Round 2 (#33): Kenny Britt - WR - Rutgers This guy has all the tools to be a solid NFL reciever. He has the speed, the size, and the hands. It will help Clemens/Ratliff immensely having a big 6'3 target to throw to. Round 3 (#76): Ron Brace - DT - Boston College A solid NT is the second biggest need on defense. Sure, Jenkins has the capability to occupy 3 guys by himself when he's on the field, but we need another adequate guy to platoon with Jenkins on a regular basis to ensure a fresh NT on the field on every down. Round 4 (#111): Andy Levitre - OG - Oregon State We need offensive line depth. Badly. The Jets also have to start grooming a young guy to take the reigns from Faneca or Woody, both of whom will soon be rounding the corner from their early to mid 30's. Round 5: No Selection Round 6 (#180): Kory Sheets - RB - Purdue I like this kid ALOT and believe he will be the biggest sleeper in this draft. He is the perfect prospect to start grooming as TJ's light is fading and will be an absolute steal should he be left in the 6th round. Round 7 (#211): Jonathan Casillas - OLB - Wisconsin Fresh off a knee injury, I suspect his stock falls lower than most will expect. Even still, he is worth the gamble in round 7 and his 4.42 speed would be of great value as an OLB in Rex Ryans blitzing schemes and also gives him the versatility to play safety as well.
Dont think it works dropping down 3 in first for 19 up in 2nd. For the lions that is Jackson is nothing special imo hes 2nd round talent hes a starter sure but not a star and that imo is what 1st rounders should be used on.
Did you not see the other threads about why not to draft Tyson Jackson? I like the Britt pick - he has the ability to contribute right away. Brace would provide a rotational player at NT and maybe DE - I think he looked a lot better than he actually is playing next to BJ Raji... Levitre may be gone before the 4th, but still a solid pick if he's there. Kort Sheets is a third-down back - we already have one of those. We need a bruiser - Andre Brown or Shonn Greene in the 3rd would be solid pick-ups. Casillas is very undersized and he's never been a great pass rusher. Right now, he looks like a Cato June-esque Tampa 2 linebacker. He could be converted into a strong safety -- he's one of the best coverage linebackers that I've seen...his speed allows him to keep up with most players...a lot like Adam Archuleta.
MrElectric, most us - myself included - are against Tyson Jackson, but he's still entitled to his own opinion even if he has seen the argument against him. Certainly a possibility as a trade if Sanchez falls that far. And the trade itself seems realistic as well. So I commend you there. I'd switch this with Hakeem Nicks at #20, if he's there, and Jarron Gilbert / Tyson Jackson / Evander Hood at #33. Then you have a real winner. I think some team like Denver or Miami will take Brace in the 2nd. Potential NTs are hard to come by in the draft.. Not sure if Levitre will be there, but if so he would be a great pickup. I like Kory Sheets a lot and I feel he will go higher. But as MrElectric said, we need more of a power/3-down RB then a Leon Washington type of RB as Kory Sheets is in a way. Interesting choice in the 7th. Couldn't complain. Again, seems like a lot of criticism, but if we came out of the draft with these players, I'd be very happy.
Yeah, yeah I know he has the right to his own opinion - I just figured that pick wouldn't have been made if he saw everyone's thoughts on Jackson.
The Lions will have to trade up to get Sanchez if he is there for us at 17 cause at 18 & 19 the Bucs & the Bears both need a QB so I dont think he would get to them at 20.
I don't like the Jackson pick. I think both Gilbert and Hood will be better 3-4 DE's if we go that way in the first. The Brace and Levitre picks are great. The problem is I do not see either one of them beign around at the picks we have in 3 or 4. Brace may be a bit over rated because of Raji next to him at BC, but the fact remains taht he is a massive man with good skills for a 3-4 NT. With so many teams playing or moving to a 3-4 this year expect him gone in the second. Btoh Green Bay and Denver could draft him that high. Levitre is one of the top 2 or 3 guards in this draft. Round 3 at the latest for him, but i could see him going to O-line needy teas such as Pittsburgh in the late second.
I love Jorvorskie Lane. He's so fun to watch...it's fun watching a fat guy get the football. He's 285 pounds, but he has some wheels for a big man. A poor man's Jerome Bettis? He'll probably have to be a fullback in the NFL, but he'll be able to make the switch - he's a solid blocker. Mike Sherman killed Lane's draft stock by not using him at all. Mike Goodson was Sherman's back... It wasn't smart for Lane to stay for his senior season at TAMU - in 2006 and 2007, he was very productive for a big back. The dude rarely goes down on first contact. He's a better receiver than most people would think also. Lane will never be a feature back in the pros, but he's a battering ram -- reminds me of a heavier LaRon McClain.
Well I like the choices but I find it highly unlikely. Brace and Levitre both could go in the second round and Britt could go in the first. Im also on the anti Tyson Jackson wagon
