Since this is now Rex's team, what do you think of the possibility of him drafting his own project QB in the later rounds? Seems like every first year coach drafts a project QB and even the late Bill Walsh recommended drafting a QB every year for development. Since we may not bring in a veteran, just wondering if Rex is going to be happy with Ainge. Don't hear much about Ainge's progress.

I agree with going with Clemens or Ratliff, I just wonder if Rex would like his own project for a few years down the road. And if so, who might it be in this draft.

Why did the Jets let go of Moore if the plan was to build a strong rushing attack? That's the area of the game where he's actually pretty good. NM, just saw he resigned with the Jets. Ok, then it's still feasible.

All this talk about QB's is silliness. Now there is even a thread about trading for Vince Young!

From the mock drafts, including the pros, to this board... once and for all:

The Jets will not trade for, sign or draft a QB. Not Lefty, not Garcia, not Boller or Simms or any other retread QB, and we sure as shit aren't going to draft Sanchez.

The money will be spent on defense first. Ryan wants a top 3 defense, maybe even more out of this roster he's building. He wants a defense that will score points. He wants a defense that gives up 10 to 13 points a game.

He wants an offesne that won't turn the ball over and one that will run it down opponents throats. An offense that wins time of possession in every game they play. One that wears opposing defense down to the ground.

That also means we won't be going after a WR early in the draft, and no FA WR's either like Harrison or Housh. At most, maybe a Mike Furrey, a guy that used to play safety for the Rams and can play ST's.

I look for a draft like this:
    CB
    LB or DE
LB or DE, possibly O line or an RB

He is building a team, and is focused on a plan. Agressive attack defense that takes the ball away and scores, with an offense that can control the line and run the ball. He will draft this way... with a purpose and a plan.

Everything he's done so far points in these directions.

Get ready for a lot of 13-10 football games.

How do you suggest we get a wr to start opposite Cotchery? Surely, Stuckey
    and Clowney aren't ready.

Drew Bennett, Joey Galloway, and Darrell Jackson top my list of FA wr's that are potentially within our price range...at worst maybe a DJ Hackett (I had a post earlier in the thread about the WR position)
right now i'd say our offense is better than what the Ravens had last year...
Rex will have us run first (that's obvious)...but i would look for the re-introduction of lots of misdirection and trick plays into our offense...Brad Smith could stick around b/c of his ability in this area
I wouldn't say the Jets are going to completely neglect the wr position early in the draft, thunderbirdjet....If the value is there at our pick within the first 4 rounds then i think they will pull the trigger on a WR

During his freshman and sophomore seasons, I loved Chase Daniel. But there is 0 talk about him now, and no hype.

    6' 220.
Makes smart decisions, very accurate. Finds the open reciever. Quick release. Great scrambler.

Short, some thought he would measure at 5'10. Not a strong arm. System QB, was never under center.

Maybe Rex will like him in the 7th. A smart decision maker who can take off. He could possibly fit our offense to a tee, its a stretch, but its possible.

we have 3 project qbs already....i'm not saying Rex wouldn't want one, but i think he goes for an early qb or none at all
hopefully he waits for next year to get his "guy"...or that what we have proves to be enough to delay a qb pick a few years

I still think we need to look at housh, I like cotch but not as a #1 wr. Despite what anyone thinks about Housh, he IS capable of being a #1 wr expecially if we are going to be a run first offense.

There may only be a few games we'd have to rely on clemens/ratliff to drive us down the field to win the game and I'd feel more confident in them doing that if their primary wr's were housh and cotch as opposed to cotch and stuckey/clowney. Just my .02

This is what I'm thinking too. Rex isn't really concerned about the offense. He wants a defense that can dominate week in and week out.

And you know this how? From visiting training camp? Having watched them play and practice? Clowney? Maybe it's his 4.37 forty. Maybe it was his horrible preseason last year. Perhaps it's because the CS has told Ryan they couldn't understand why Mangini would not let him play?

Not worthy of starting? I'd argue that anyone that said that is not worthy of posting. You know NOTHING about Clowney. NOTHING.

This team is going young. Stuckey, Clowney, Clemens, Ratliff. No more over the hill players. No Marvin Harrison, no Housh. No Ray Lewis. Get used to it.

stuckey had the opportunity to prove he could be the slot wr last season...and he did nothing...he will have to play his way onto the roster this year
and it would be foolish to assume clowney could be more than a slot wr this season bc he is such a mystery...and i'm glad the FO seems focused on giving him every opportunity to be the #3 guy
but a vet and/or rookie is necessary...but there is zero chance it will be Housh or Harrison i understand the frustration you're getting from the Housh and Harrison threads
Drew Bennett, Joey Galloway, Darrell Jackson would be more likely

That's all great n all but we do not have a #1 wr. If we do not get a legit WR, our defense better be fucking spectacular because I see a lot of 8 in the box in jones and leons futures.

I agree with you. The offense will be awful. i think there is an outside chance of the Jets drafting a huge run blocking O lineman early just to beef up the line, other wise it will be all D. I think Ryan would like a line that can push the pile. They will throw outside some, set some screens, but it's going to be 40 carries a game.

I am beginning to think Ryan wants the defense to outscore the offense.
