Why not Brad Smith?

This is a hypothetical question. Why not let Brad Smith have a shot at the QB job? I am not saying i'm in favor of this but, hear me out. He knows the offense and what is expected of the receivers in it. He has the ability to scramble, which just adds another weapon to our offense. His collegeg stats are a little underwhelming in the passing categories compared to our other QB's, but he also faced a much tougher conference sched in the BIG 12. Like I said this is just a hypothetical question that could be a waste of a post. Especially if he ends up getting released. Which, BTW, I would not rule out. I was hesitant to post this, but I have noticed a love for the scrambling QB from some of my fellow posters. Just wanted some different opinions. If he was succesful, wouldn't you rather it be succesful in the Green and White instead of Orange and Brown?

He was a decent QB in college. Id much rather trade him and a pick to Cleveland for Brady Quinn.

He can go to Cleveland and be the third QB, then Quinn and Anderson get injured in some kind of brown-wing accident and he gets to start the last 8 games. Then, he leads Cleveland to a .500 record, gets cut in the offseason and we can pick him up next year. Wait a year, and we can have another Ray Lucas, I always knew he should have been the man! Yeah, that's how it could happen, that's reasonable...

Again, this is hypothetical. But yet is always a possibility. He has just as much time in this offense as Clemens, and more time than Ratliff and Ainge. I didn't say he was going to light it up. I just wanted opinions. Obviously he doesn't rank high on anyones charts. However, ther have been more than 1 or 2 people on this site mention Vick and Troy Smith to lead this team. Evryone has a boner for the wildcat, Smith would be well suite for that. His arm is formiddable. He won some big games in college against some tough teams. Granted most of it was with his legs, but you just never know what someone can do when given the opportunity.

unlike many of the other responders, I want to applaud your suggestion--I posted last year (pre Favre) that we should make Smith our Number THREE QB behind Pennington and Clemens--I think Smith should consider QB because he STINKS as a WR--The sooner the jets/Browns, whoever, realize that, the better.

I don't like the idea simply because he hasn't been working as a QB and learning the offense like the other young QB's we have. He'd basically be starting from scratch with a little head start where as Clemens and Ratty have years in the system as a QB.

I don't hate the suggestion given the secrecy of Mangini and strange decisions that were made when he was the HC. But I think Smith's progression as a WR was hindered by being asked to participate in QB activities early on. He'd probably love to be a QB and he's had a few chances in preseason games in the past (didn't look too good). He should dedicate his time to being the best WR and special teams player he can be.
