Not so fast on Bart Scott. The free-agent linebacker was supposed to be on the verge of joining the New York Jets, but reports now have Scott giving the Baltimore Ravens an opportunity to match New York's offer. If true, it wouldn't be the first time he went down this road. When Scott was last a free agent he had a lucrative offer from Cleveland that he took back to Baltimore, promising to re-sign with the Ravens if they matched the deal. They did, and he stayed.
So this is his MO huh? When the day comes that he's really wanting to make a FA splash, teams won't take him seriously. I think he just fucked himself..
You give front offices too much credit. Someone always winds up making an ass out of themselves to make a play at the hot girl, her reputation be damned.
This is his last contract. He's going to be 34 when it is up and nobody is going to want him at that point. So he's going to get the best deal he can in the place he thinks is least likely to decide he was a mistake in 3 years and cut him early. That's Baltimore.
and in the meantime, he'll jerk the Jets around until he squeezes the last dime out of Newsome's pocket. Nice plan if it works but man, whatta gamble. This will be the second time he's pulled this shit on a franchise?? Again, fuck Scott and pull the freakin offer. Our franchise has been disrespected enough over the last 4 decades..
Scott's doing us a favor. He's not that good and now Ryan will have to go out there and create a successful 3-4 without leaning on crutches from his Baltimore days. The only worse thing for the Jets than signing Bart Scott to an over-priced contract would be signing Ray Lewis.
not signing with a team isn't disrespectful. the Jets can offer him more if they want. if they choose not to, it is just asinine to project that as the player being disrespectful (not to mention the fact that it isn't disrespectful to begin with).
Using a team's good faith offer as leverage IS disrespectful. If you're not negotiating in good faith, that's disrespectful. If being used like a 10cent crackwhore isn't disrespectful, I don't know what is. You can't honestly believe that Scott, who has pulled this shit before, ever really intended to sign with the Jets in the first place considering he gave his old team a chance to meet or top the offer? That's a bad way to do business and if this FO has any pride, they should pull the offer immediately. If you've ever bought a home, you know that once your offer is in to the seller's agent, they cannot accept any more offers until the first offer is either completed or falls thru. That prevents bidding wars. Scott's agent should have gotten a firm commitment from his client before negotiating with the Jets. Sorry, I'm not giving Scott a pass on this and honestly, I doubt if Scott ever would be a Jet as he obviously doesn't want to leave the Ravens..
The Jets should walk up to Scott now, make him a final offer and tell him to sign immediately or get the hell out of the building.
Correct me if I'm wrong (seriously), but didn't Scott say even before the FA period ended that if he went into free agency he was going to take any new offer(s) back to the Ravens to see if they could match? That very well may have been right after 12:01, but I'm fairly sure it was before any formal offer was made by the Jets. If that's the case then we knew he was going to do this, right? If we had an issue with that, then our front office should have never made an offer at all. I don't think the Jets front office is surprised by this at all. If I'm wrong about the timing, then forget what I said, just throwing it out there.
