Assuming that the plan is what we've been told...that the Jets are focusing on building a dominant defense first and Assuming we get Bart Scott, and maybe grab a safety or DB in free agency to strengthen our secondary, I would like to see the Jets find "their Seymour" with the 1st round pick. Ellis is inconsistent, and the other side is a hole. We need to find a stud 3-4 end in the draft who will demand a double-team. That means then that 4 offensive linemen would be tied up blocking Jenkins and our mystery man, which will finally allow our LBs to consistently get to the QB. Yes a wideout would be nice, but we don't NEED a wideout...you've got your 3 starters now: Cotchery for possession, Clowney for deep threat, and Stuckey to work the slot. Mix in passes to Keller and Washington, and you've got 5 threats to the defense (after they account for TJ in the running game.) More than enough to put up 24 points a game. Yes, another DT is necessary to support and spell Jenkins and to be insurance for injury and to build for the future, but that is not as big a hole for 09 as the DE. I hate the 3-4 because it turns the DE position (a former residence of some of the Jets most legendary players) into a place for hold-the-fort guys. But if this is what we're staying with as a base, it's time to upgrade the talent. The Jets took 3 years to finally get a proper NT for the 34, they shouldn't wait any longer to get the right guys in place on either side of him.
The guy that would be a good fit would be B.J Raji. He's a DT but he could play 3-4 DE. Problem is that he will most likely be gone when the Jets pick.
No. We need a starting WR and CB even worse. The only DE even slightly worthy of that pick would be LSU's Tyson Jackson, but he's a similar player to Kenyon Coleman and wouldn't be much of an upgrade..
Maclin would be great, but CB at this moment is more of a need. I'd rather go with Clowney, Cotchery, and Stuckey than what the team has at CB. Defensive end really is a need as well, but again I see CB as more of an issue. I think the Jets go CB, WR, QB, DE depending on who's there.
Not sure why you're being sarcastic here as DE is really a need and it wouldn't be streach to see the Jets taking one early.
For all the people that want a WR in the 1st round- Would you rather draft a WR in the 1st or trade a 1st for Boldin?
We definitely need to take a 3-4 DE early in the draft. We still haven't drafted one after 3 drafts as a 3-4 team.
I think Lowery is the starting cornerback you're looking for. I think anybody you bring in there is going to suck without a decent passrush. In the 2nd half of the season, when the rush disappeared, the secondary was following guys around for 6 and 7 seconds. Revis is the better player, so Lowery naturally was the target of most of those plays. I saw the kid defend a lot of passes and I believe he would turn those into INTs this year, between 5 and 10, with a consistent rush.
I don't think CB is the way to go unless Jenkins/Davis are there. We already have a 1st rounder there in Revis, a young player making a mint. Don't need a second 1st rounder to make similar money (revis was 14th wasn't he). Free agency should (would like to see) provide a viable CB opposite Revis. I posted a thread with WR for us in the 1st but I am now leaning towards DE because our WR's are so young compared to our DE's: Cotch - 26 Clowney - 23 Stuckey - 25 Henry - 23. Our DE's are OLD: Coleman - 29 Ellis - 31 We need to get younger at DE! The next question becomes who are the top 5 3-4 DE's in the draft? After Raji (most definitely gone by 17) and Jackson (sounds like he doesn't have what we would be looking for) who is there? I assume we would trade down if DE was a definite target in the 1st. How old is Canty? How much would he cost?
