Jets Daily got this wrong. Read what Cimini actually wrote on his blog. The Ravens offered Scott 7.5 mil a year, and Ray Lewis 8 mil a year, but for less years than Scott's deal. Jets Daily misread this as the Jets offering Scott what the Ravens actually offered Lewis.
I don't care if the Jets give him 9 mil a year. EVERYTHING in Ryan's and Tanny's plan hinges on Scott. (largely my opinion/observation). Ryan wants a top three defense. If the Jets only give up 13 points a game, even if the offense sucks, they will be in every game and win most of them. Scott is the keystone. A CB in the first round, another FA CB, either Dockery, Brown or the G from pittsburgh, maybe an RB in the second... it all comes together as long as we get Scott. I don't know if Brown to the Phins is a slam dunk as some of our resident Miami fans claim. He wants to leave the Ravens because they want him to play C. All the reports out of Miami also have him playinf C. Guards make more money.. which is why he wants out of Baltimore. Will Miami give him guard money, or center money? The Jets would pay him as a guard, and have a backup for Mangold to boot. Things just might be breaking out way...
Well I've never been one to jump the gun but my guess is that if Scott gets on a plane and comes to New York the next time he steps on a plane he'll be a Jet (no pun intended). There would be no way he'd come here if he wasn't serious about signing.
Sorry about that, fellas. Terrible misread on my part, I hope I didn't get people too excited. Thank you, mst300. It's updated now.
Just came across this Minutes into free agency, Scott praises Jets staff February 27, 2009 12:59 AM Posted by ESPN.com's Tim Graham About a half hour after he went up for bids, coveted linebacker Bart Scott spoke of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan in glowing terms. Scott Echoes from the 12 chimes of midnight barely had died out when Scott was a guest on "SportsCenter" early Friday morning to discuss his situation. He and the Baltimore Ravens failed to reach terms, sending Scott to the open market. He's expected to meet with the Jets later Friday. Ryan was his defensive coordinator in Baltimore. The Jets' defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, was Scott's position coach in Baltimore. "I got a special place in my heart for those guys because they are the guys that gave me the chance and taught me how to play defense," Scott told ESPN via phone. "I was the happiest man in the world when he got the job because I felt it was long overdue. "We always have a great time with Rex and the guys that helped kind of mature me from undrafted to what I am now. So they're just as much a part of my success as I am." Not to be a negative nancy, but it sounds like he's posturing trying to drive up Baltimore's price =/
