Holes the Jets need to fill (my opinion of course)?

Note: I'll assume Moore will be gone: looking at worst case scenario and that QB is not a need.

Reasonable needs, in no particular order:
    S - starter
    CB - starter
    WR ? starter (#1)
    ILB - starter
    RG/RT - starter
    FB - 1st string
    DE/DL - depth/starter potential
    LB - depth
    TE - blocking serviceable
    OL ? depth
    P ? 1st string
    PK - assume Feely
OLB - too much money invested - pray for Gholston to come through
    Am I missing anything?

So if we take this list and look at our draft...
    1st - need a starter from day 1
    2nd - hopeful starter
    3rd - potential to start/depth
    4th - depth/potential to start
    5th - depth
    6th - depth
    7th - depth

    Outlook:
We need to sign at least 3 out of 5 starters in free-agency (S, CB, WR, ILB, RG/OT)
Assume Leonhard is one of them.
WR looks like something we?ll need to draft, so that leaves signing 2/3 between CB, ILB, OL.

    Realistic Outlook:
    S - starter - Leonhard
CB ? starter ? free agency (adequate upgrades available)
WR ? starter ? 1st rd (assuming Maclin/Harvin is there)
ILB ? starter ? free agency (cross my fingers Scott)
RG/RT ? starter ? 2nd rd (best chance at a starter for round)
    FB - 1st string ? free agency (Richardson/Griffith)
    DE/DL - depth/starter pot. ?3rd rd
LB ? depth ? 4th rd, free agency
TE - blocking serviceable ? free agency
OL ? depth ? free agency, 5th rd
    P ? free agency

    6th & 7th rd ? FO?s gut feeling

A heck of a lot of assumptions I know. Hopefully Moore stays, one less hole to fill with proven success. Certainly a lot of work to be done.

I hope by noon tomorrow we hear of 2 quality signings ? it?d make my day (well 1 quality signing would too)

    Thoughts?
    Additions?
    Subtractions?
    Own outlook?

Good write-up. You left off RB though - unless you think we're set. Assuming we re-sign Richardson at FB, I'd like to see

    RB - Draft first day
    CB - Draft
OG - I hear the draft is pretty weak this year, but we need both a RG and a future LG.
S - Draft one even if we're picking up Leonhard
    TE - Free agency
WR - If we don't get a RB, maybe draft early
LB - Free agency or draft
DE - Draft for depth/future starter

two Pro bowl RBs last year... can't do RB 1st day. That pick needs to go to another skill position that was cut.

We have zero depth at the position and our starter is an over-the-hill workhorse, not a play-maker. I like TJ a lot and appreciate what he's done for us, but much of his success has to be attributed to our Oline. I think the running game is the more important facet of an offense and I'd like to see us try to get a star player to feature. Obviously we have Leon, but I don't like the idea of him as a starter - I think his talents are much better suited as a specialist and change-of-pace back.

I think we're much weaker at RB than at WR. If we can steal a good RB in a later round, that's definitely fine with me but it doesn't always work out that way.

Wow, the Jets are looking like they might take a step back this year. I am sure they will fill those holes, but it will take time to gel.

How about Igor Olshansky for some DL depth? I don't think he'll cost that much

I mean they were 9-7, then lost their #1QB, #1WR, switched head coaches, again give a rival a quality player for free (Penny, now Coles),etc. But yeah, we can say that every year. Plus after free agency and the draft I am sure this team will look alot better.

WR needs to be addressed in the first round since there is a big off drop off in talent after the top five or six guys in the draft and none of them will be there in the 2nd. I'm on the Hakeem Nicks bandwagon and I'd take him over Jeremy Maclin, Percy Harvin or any of those guys.

CB should ideally be addressed with a free agent such as Leigh Bodden, Jabari Greer or Bryant McFadden.

As for, Safety looks like Jim Leonhard will sign here.

I'm not a Josh Freeman fan. I would sign a Byron Leftwich or Ryan Fitzpatrick.. I doubt Sanchez gets to #17..

I'd like to sign Jason Brown or Ray Willis, who can play tackle as well, but otherwise we need to look for someone in the 3rd round at latest.

And why don't people understand that Kenyon Coleman is supposed to be a run defender and not a pass rusher?? We could use another DL that can be more effective against the pass too at some point.

Oh, and Igor Olshansky won't come cheap...

I don't think we're getting Bart Scott or Ray Lewis. So barring us signing Channing Crowder or something, I'd bring back Eric Barton and draft an ILB between rounds 2-4...

How do you have a holes to fill thread and not list the QB position? Until we figure the QB position out this team is going nowhere but down. QB is the #1 need by a mile over every other position.

This is a thread for holes that need filling by training camp, looking at it realistically in terms of what seems to be coming from Ryan/Tann.

Obviously it'd be nice to get a quality QB, DE to replace Coleman, LG eventual replacement, C depth, RB eventual replacement, backup NT, DE eventual replacement for Ellis but I don't believe it's realistic for right now.

Ryan has stated he's happy with the QB position for now! That's why I didn't list it as a need right now.

ILB can be filled in teh first round if we don't get Scott or Lewis. I think we aren't in that bad of shape with WRs. Stuckey is a solid option with speed. Clowney didn't get a real shot last year and is the fastest guy on the team. Henry is a big guy I think he is like 6-4 or something and we still have Keller and Cotchery.. that isn't a bad start. There are a lot of options as well in the draft this year at WR. I don't like TJ Housh because he is mostly the same thing as Cotchery.. Antoni Bryant I like better but I would rather go to the draft for WR. RG they better get Moore signed or I will be pissed.. if they bring in some RT and move Woody..it might be ok but why lose moore..come on guys he is a solid starter. not even the waekest link of our Oline lsat year.. Safety I like Leonard..and think it will happen.. ILB is the real issue and if we come out either one of the USC LBs we will be fine.. lauriitus from Ohio stater (spelled wrong I know) would also be good esecially at falling back into coverage...
