Seems to me hes virtually guaranteed to go to Miami and have a 1200 yard season. Everything Pennington did last year in Miami he did without any wide receivers who know how to play the position. Coles isn't as fast as when he was 22, but he's still got the wheels, and more importantly, he knows how to run routes, knows how to get open, and only occasionally drops the ball. And of course those of us who are willing to remember the good times from the Pennington-Coles era remember the Manning-Harrison-esque chemistry these guys have on the field. We've basically handed Miami a passing game for free in the space of about fourteen months, and are now ourselves, without either a quarterback or a top wideout. Those of you who will say Cotchery is a top wideout, look at what he has to say about it. I like Cotchery, solid player, but any time anybody stuck a microphone in his face, all he said was, every catch I get, I get because of how good Coles is at what he does. Every time Coles was injured, Cotchery struggled, and his post game comment was invariably, now I've had to do it, I appreciate what Coles goes through every week all the more. He's a good player, brings a lot to the field in terms of size and hands, but doesn't have Coles' ability. The only positive to this is that, as Tannenbaum himself has publicly noted (in comments that seemed inappropriate to me at the time, but after cutting Coles loose its obvious we arent going to catch anybody by surprise anymore when we draft a wideout), this draft class is pretty deep on talented wide receivers. Even with Coles on board, I was hoping to see the Jets land Jeremy Maclin from Missouri. But he might not even make it out of the top ten. If you have Coles on board, you can take somebody less developed like a Heyward-Bey, or a Percy Harvin, let them contribute some while they figure out how to play the position at the NFL level. Without Coles, we're looking for a starter, and you might get that on draft day, you might not. Nothing in free agency interests me that much, either. Houshmanzadeh is alright, but hes nothing exceptional; I suppose Rex Ryan is in as good a position to know how good he is as anybody, as hes had to defend him and ocho cinco twice a year for the last five or six years. But if you leave money out of it, I'd probably rather have Coles than Houshmanzadeh, and Houshmanzadeh isnt going to cost less than 6 mil a year. Remember Coles has done everything he's ever done in the role of a number one guy, TJ has always played second fiddle to one of the more physically gifted wideouts in the league. Remember Peerless Price a few years back, turned the big stats he got from playing with Eric Moulds into a big contract with a new team, then ended up slinking back to Buffalo with his tail between his legs when he couldn't make it on his own? I see the same in TJs future. Could be wrong, but this is a case where I woulda taken the sure thing. Anyway, this doesnt make sense to mefrom that impersonal Madden 09-esqe perspective. My guess is the idea is the same as it was with Moore and Baker, clear out all the dirty laundry from the old regime, if guys arent happy with their contracts let them work it out on the market, that way if they end up coming back they wont be able to bitch that the Jets aren't paying them what they're worth. But make no mistake about it, six million for a year is not a big cap number in this day and age for a guy who brought as much to the field as Coles did, and the odds are pretty well stacked against this team fielding somebody better in place of him next year. Plus next time the Dolphins beat the Jets, theyll be doing it with two of the best Jet players of the decade leading the charge, and its hard to get excited about that.
the wildcat will be friendly to Coles the same way it helps Chad... with those two together it'll help even more.... Coles has to go to miami first. the odds are good, but it needs to happen. the way I see it, which is not condusive to how the Jets are as a franchise, is that the answer is to find better players and beat them with them the way the talented franchises do it...
For all he's done in the past, Coles had become an injury~prone distraction. Compromising for 5m in cap relief is a great piece of work by the Jets.
Coles is clearly going downhill, I have no concern at all about him going to Miami. I am however concerned about our O next year which at this point looks to be in the bottom 5 of the league if not worse. The draft needs to be all about the O.
If we are counting on Stuckey to be our #1 WR and Clemens/Ratliff to be our starting QB we are in big trouble for next year and the future.
Trivia question: What do Quadry Ismail, Brandon Stokely, and Trent Dilfer all have in common? ...and I agree on the part about trouble, it's just that I don't Coles would have been significantly better, so it was 6 or a half dozen (at a significant discount)...
This cut seems to be a combination of Coles being overpaid, and being a bad character around the locker room. I think Rex would have cut Mawae's ass in this way as well if he was around back then, he won't take shit from his players.
Stu, this isn't taking into account the eventual step back that Chad is having next year. He got through a 16 game season for only the third time in his career and was completely exposed by the Ravens defense as we all knew he would be. If he doesn't regress/get injured next year I'll be stunned Coles or no Coles. With his arm strength or lack thereof, this isn't a QB that's going to age well either.
Coles is not worth 6 million a year. We saw after the Titans game that he couldn't get open against any cornerback. Not to mention that he's 31, cries all the time about his contract, is one hit away from being ruined and impeding the development of Stuckey and perhaps Clowney. We also would not have had any roster spots to draft or sign another young wr. Can you even imagine how annoying Coles would have been in the last year of his contract? Every day we would have heard from an anonymous source undercutting Rex Ryan. F$ck Coles and his 30,000 square foot house.
We might have given Miami a passing game. But they won't do anything against our defense. I'm not concerned.
He wanted a long term deal, the Jets did not want to give it to him. He agreed to give up his guaranteed money to leave. This gives us 6 mil in cap room we didnt have before and it gives him a chance at 1 last contract.
Whats not to get..... He is old, has alligator arms now, is an injury problem, shoots his mouth off like he is a superstar and gets paid way too much for his abilities. Seems pretty simple to me...... or did I over rate him?
I'm sick of being worried about other teams in our division and how cutting our hasbeens and malcontents is going to build them into a powerhouse. Coles has been a whiney little bitch his whole career. Now he's an over the hill whiney little bitch who's injured every year. He was never a true #1 reciever. That's what we need and his $6million in cap savings will go a long way in getting one.
haha this is so funny that years back all these people were like we miss coles bring him back now they are ready to throw him under the bus... Coles is a good receiver and might of turned out a good season if he wasnt being lead into bone crushing tackles by old as brett favre... practically every receiver whas the recipient of a lead pass by favre and im sure brad smith thanks him too..
I never watched Coles and said to myself, wow, this guy is fast! He always looked like he had average speed as a WR. Aside from that, he was going to be whining very loudly all year about wanting a new contract. He let the Jets know he would be a distraction, and wanted out so bad he walked away fron 6 million dollars. It sounds to me like he laid the gauntlet and gave the Jets two options: Pay me like you are crazy, or let me go. I for one was tried of his complaining. Money this, Chad that, on and on. It's not like he is as good as a Boldin or Burress, two PITA Players but far more talented. I'm still not convinced the Jets go with a WR in the draft either. I think it will be Cotchery and Clowney, Stuckey in the slot. Leon will get time in the slot, B Smith will see spot duty. Keller should improve and will be a recieving threat. The Jets aren't go to be passing very much anyway. I think Westoff will throw his weight around in attempting to keep Smith. I don't know what to think about this kid Marcus Henry on the practice squad: The Jets came back nine selections after Ainge and drafted Kansas WR Marcus Henry in the sixth round. Henry, who began last season with three straight 100-yard receiving games, finished with 1,014 yards. The 6'4", 207-pound target had 54 catches and averaged a healthy 18.8 yards per reception. ?I think I could be a possession kind of guy. In college, I was considered a tall guy who could go up and get jump balls,? Henry said. ?I think I could bring that into the NFL, develop that more and be that type of receiver.? Marcus Henry SELECTED BY: New York Jets Round 6(5) SI Grade3.18GRADING SYSTEM Position: WR Class: Sr School: Kansas Conference: Big 12 Ht., Wt.: 6-3.5, 207 40 Time: 4.56 BIOGRAPHY: Two-year starter who also saw extensive action with the first team as a sophomore. All-Conference selection last season after posting career-high numbers of 54/1014/10 and averaging 18 yards/reception. Junior-year totals included 25/316/3. POSITIVES: Nice-sized possession receiver with limited speed. Sells routes, works to get separation, and extends his hands to offer the quarterback a target. Adjusts to the errant throw, looks the pass in, and makes the reception in stride with no problem. Uses his frame to shield away defenders and gets vertical to pull the ball down in a crowd. Gives effort blocking downfield. NEGATIVES: Loses concentration and drops some catchable throws. Displays minimal quickness and does not play to his 40 time. ANALYSIS: Henry has been a reliable pass-catcher at Kansas the past three seasons. He's a hard-working prospect with potential as a fifth receiver used on third down or in the red zone.
This is what this is all about. Coles wants a 3-4 year contract, a little long term stability. He isn't even opposed to come back to Jets, he is going to test the market. If someone wants to pay him big bucks, he'll leave, but he may still come back.
One other thing about Coles. This organization took a big chance when we drafted him. Granted it was Parcells who brought him in but remember, he was kicked out of Florida State for being a thief and getting a handout of about $1000 worth of merchandise he and Warrick paid like $20.00 for. So we take a shot and he does ok with us then bolts for the $$$ in Washington and leaves his good buddy Chad behind. He cries, gets traded back, for Moss who I always thought was better anyway and cries the entire time he's back... did I miss anything?
