Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina.................ran a 4.5 and some scouts believe he will be in the High 4.4's at his pro-day. Incredible 41" verticle for a guy his size. Really great to see a kid work hard and improve his stock. Numbers like this are similar to Keller's in last year's combine. I expect Cook to do well in receiving drills, at his pro-day, and he will secure his spot as the 2nd TE off the board in late Rd 1. Look's like a Keller clone(Cook is slightly bigger) to me, being a Hybrid player, not a blocking TE, but an exciting ofeensive weapon.............send him out in receiver formations, in motion.....A TE in a WR's body. Probaly won't be a NY Jet , but some team is going to get a very good prospect. I'd like to pick up a TE with better blocking skills like Hill at NCSt in a later Rd. Afer hearing crap about Andre' Smith and Crabtree's surgery.....hearing good news like Cook's progress is exciting. I really like seeing players improve their darft stock. I believe MrElectric was predicting good things for Jared Cook.....good call!! Jared Cook Amazes Scouts at Combine Posted Feb 21st 2009 2:27 PM by JJ Cooper (author feed) Filed Under: NFL Draft Heading into the combine, Brandon Pettigrew was easily the best tight end in this draft, while there was quite a battle to determine who was second-best. Jared Cook may be changing that. The South Carolina Gamecock ran a blazingly fast 4.50 40-yard dash--the second fastest time by a tight end this decade (topped only by Vernon Davis), while Pettigrew ran a very pedestrian 4.82 40. Cook wrapped up the title of best athlete among the tight end crop by also showing the best vertical leap (41 inches) and broad jump (10-foot-3) among tight ends while also bench pressing 225 pounds a very solid 23 times (two more than elite tackle prospect Michael Oher). Everyone knew that Cook was likely to run a pretty fast time -- at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, he's not much of a blocker and will have to be primarily a receiving tight end in the NFL -- but by running a time that will be faster than most of the wide receivers running this weekend, Cook has shown he is truly an elite athlete. Cook had to pull out of the receiving drills because he pulled a muscle, but after putting on the show he did in the "measurable" events, that won't be much of a problem for him. There can be an argument made that Cook's climb up the draft ladders will be another sign that NFL scouts get too enamored with 40-yard dash times and don't focus enough on production -- Davis hasn't turned into an NFL star yet -- but the NFL loves elite athletes and Cook has proven that he's a one-in-a-million athlete. Pettigrew is more of an all-around talent, but he will have some damage control ahead of him as he heads to his individual workout at Oklahoma State. Tight ends who can't crack 4.8 in the 40-yard dash don't get drafted in the first round, no matter how productive they were in college, so Pettigrew will have some pressure on him to fix his horrendous time.
He's more of a jumbo sized receiver - he's a piss-poor blocker. Cook is a beast, though. He'll be an asset to any team that needs a receiving tight end. His best option would be as a Colston-type receiver, but I think the Eagles will take him as a tight end.
Keller's blocking skills aren't anything to right home about, although I believe Keller will improve. Cook is the "Buzz" at that combine right now........hello Rd 1.
Yeah, he does. It's a shame he tore up his knee - he's one of the more athletic tight ends in a long time. He'd be a first rounder, no doubt, if he was never injured.
So for arguement's sake, Hakeem Nicks and Jared Cook are both on the board at the end of round 1...who do you take?
I expected Cook to put on a show at the combines, but he's exceeded even what I anticipated hmy: Needless to say when I adjust my TE rankings, post combines, Cook will at least be the #2 TE on my board I had him at #5 going into the combines, but I'll at least have him at #2 coming out :up:
Hakeem Nicks and never look back........Nicks has the best hands in this draft....period. NIcks knows how to be physical, has strong hands and is a football player....plain and simple. Right now, Nicks is a late Rd 1 selection, but I still expect him to move up by April.
Pettigrew is more a true TE, that can do it all, but run light's out. In fact, 4.8 is probably what a TE , like Pettigrew will run. If you want a well-rounded traditional TE, Pettigrew, is your man. Cook is going to be that Keller clone.
