http://det.scout.com/a.z?s=93&p=9&...98765&fhn=1 RoarReport.com has learned that the Detroit Lions may have dealt veteran quarterback Jon Kitna to the New York Jets in exchange for a late-round draft choice. A league source informed RoarReport.com of the deal late Thursday night, but thus far we have not been able to confirm the report. Kitna, who is due a roster bonus March 1 worth $500,000 or $1 million, wasn't expected to return in Detroit for 2009, an assumption that was nearly clinched when the team restructured the contract of veteran Daunte Culpepper. It is expected that the Lions will prepare for the regular season with Culpepper as the starter, along with former second-round pick Drew Stanton and possibly re-signing Dan Orlovsky. The team also harbors the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, which many believe will be used to select Georgia signal caller Matt Stafford or USC's Mark Sanchez. Kitna turns 37 in September, and has spent the previous three years in Detroit. He tossed for over 4,000 yards in both 2006 and 2007, before what some considered a "phantom" back injury ended his 2008 campaign. Privately, Kitna was disgruntled with Detroit's new offensive philosophy following two years of relative success under guru Mike Martz.
i seriously hope RoarReport is written by a bunch of drug addicted alcoholics with a penchant for making up stories
Really? I thought for sure they would release him...smart move by the Lions to at least get something for him.
it could be worse. hopefully it is a 6th or 7th since he wasn't going to play in detroit anyway. he's not a bad fall back if Clemens and Ratliff can't cut it, or if we draft a guy to sit and learn. Tanny always likes to be able to shore things up before the draft, this would just be bringing in depth at a position of need.
I would not mind this... having a vet behind the kids would be a reasonable thing to do, as long as we get him for near to free.
agreed, if we manage to do this for a conditional pick, thats more or less the same Denver gave us for D-rob, I believe its a decent move.
We didn't get anything for Robertson. Hopefully Tanny pulled a similar deal though - we'll give them a draft pick if Kitna plays a certain amount of snaps.
I dont like Jon Kitna at all. I hope this rumor isnt true. And if it is then I hope somebody beats him out for the job. I guess I wouldnt mind him as a backup but I dont want him as a starter on this team.
It's a long long way away and we havent even got to the draft yet but I just hope he isnt the starting QB on this team if this rumor is indeed true. Draft a QB, go a younger route or let Clemens or Ratliff play. JMO.
That's the point of a stopgap option - it gives your new rookie QB a chance to sit and learn. Example: Carson Palmer behind...Jon Kitna I can only hope we move up and draft Mark Sanchez.
I'm certainly not calling you out, just doing some year end accounting and trying to take a break. Looking for any material to read that doesn't include columns of numbers.
Agreed. I understand what a stop gap option is. But I dont expect the Jets to draft a QB (in the early round it least). I would like to see what Clemens could do behind a good line and the Jets are said to be high on Ratliff. I'd like to see those guys battle it out with a younger QB brought in through Free Agency like a Leftwich etc. I just dont like old QB's.
Alright, Electric. Once the dust settles on all of this I think we're going to need a draft thread that takes into account all these cuts and possible trades. What the new positions of need are and a new mock draft. I see the award. Give me something informative to read.
I hope this is not true. Kitna couldn't succeed in a pass happy Mike Martz offense. Plus he is hardly a game manager. In fact, he is an interception machine. Bad move.
