unless the jets hit the jackpot in FA then you have to retain ellis..... partial restructure with a % guarenteed by 2010. jil
Don't get me wrong, I think Mangold is a phenomenal offensive lineman, but do you realize what Abrahams almost guaranteed 12+ sacks a year could have done for our defense these past few years? We all piss and moan about no pass rush and really, we got to the QB between Abraham and Ellis and the pass rush issues started when we lost #94.
If Abraham could have stayed healthy it would have been a no brainer to bring him back. But he couldn't and we didn't. Hindsight is 20/20, but I'm still glad we made the move and drafted Mangold.
Do you realize that we switched to the 3-4? Abraham's success has come in the 4-3. If he stayed in New York, he would've acted like a little bitch, like always -- when he sat out of the Steelers playoff game with that minor injury, my opinion of him changed completely.
I think Chansi Stuckey should have been allowed to play. Our team never lets our young guys play because of public outcry to win now and it comes back to bite us. Cotchery was on the bench for how years before he was allowed to play? Ellis will have to be addressed via the Draft or signing a young Free agent.
Sacks? Dude what the heck are you talking about? Ellis was a 3-4 end, you dont judge him by sacks. Come on....stop, just stop!
You're right (according to http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html), but I still don't think it's a good idea. Saving 4 million is not a good reason to lose everything he brings to the table. It will cost a lot more than that to replace what he does.
I would love it if Stuckey turned out to be great, and yes, perhaps they should have given him more playing time. But hte fact is he's not shown much.
Is this intended to be sarcastic? 60 tackles and 8 sacks (including just 1 in the entire second half of the season) is far from setting the world on fire. Are those numbers really worthy of his current contract for someone who is supposed to be our best pass rusher? Sorry, Shaun. Either work with us on a significant restructuring or hit the road.
It depends. One article says we have $13 million in cap space and nyjetscap.com says we have $3.5 million. If we indeed have $13 million then it's an easy choice to keep Ellis. But if we are down to $3.5 then we need to deal with Ellis and Brandon Moore. It seems Baker will be cut so that initially saves us $2.1 million, but we will still need to do more. Restructuring Moore's contract can probably save us another $2 million. Is $7.5 million enough to sign a few FA's and our draft picks? I don't think so, especially if we are going to make a run at Bart Scott. That means we will have to do something about Ellis.
It's hard to give much credence to suggestions that essentially amount to cutting a starter to provide cap space to fill another position IF there is no plan B to replace the starter.
I think Stuckey has been very good when given the opportunity. I cannot remember him dropping a single pass, but I can remember him catching some tough ones in traffic. I think he's going to be a solid slot guy for us for a while.
So the answer is to just accept overpaid mediocrity? To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure who I'd replace him with. You'd have to give me some time to do my offseason homework. But I do know replacing him wouldn't be the biggest shoes in the world to fill, after his less than stellar performance as of late.
First of all, he's definitely better than mediocre. He's solid and if we just got rid of him it would be very noticeable IMO. You don't accept anything, he's overpaid and getting older. First you try and rework the contract, then you plan for the future. We need to draft a 3-4 DE early in the draft.
