He was offered the same deal and turned it down. Once the Jets gave that deal to Ellis they basically took it off the table for JAbe. It was a classic case of management believing they had one slot to pay at that price and not realizing that they had given it to the wrong guy. This is all hindsight of course and I was as happy as the next guy that they managed to lock up one of the two DE's instead of losing both of them which is what I figured would happen given Bradway's lousy record on talent retention. JAbe was a flawed player but he would have been a much better player to keep than Ellis given their respective abilities.
Ellis is a better 3-4 end than either of the guys starting for Pittsburgh. We let him go and he's as likely to wind up there as in Miami. He's not as good as the NE ends though, not by a longshot.
Ellis is double teamed. When you have not threat from the other end its hard to break loose. When abe was here is was a different story. CUT EVERYONE
Nice post. And for those who say he's overpaid, the reality is you can't go through the whole roster identifying who you think is overpaid and then assume that means they should automatically be cut. You need a Plan B. Who takes their place? How does the team get there? On any given roster there will always be someone, actually probably several, who in hindsight can be called overpaid. That doesn't mean the team would have been better off without him/them, with some scrubs playing instead. What is the alternative? I think Ellis is a solid player. If there's really a good case he gets too much money, how about calling his agent first before cutting him?
The Question is do you think the Team is ready to win now or a year or two from now. If you think this is the year then keep him. If you don't then plans need to be made now regarding your Defensive end that will be 34-35 when the team is ready to make noise? It is better to cut ties a year to early as opposed to a year to late. I would rather replace him with a younger hungrier player now than have this problem with a team that is ready to compete and he gets old on us.
Maybe we should move the big cat to RB? Look at how nimble and graceful he is on his feet.
It shouldn't be necessary to gut the team and see them go to like 4-12 again in order to try and get success in the medium term. Without a plan B at Ellis's position, and certainly if you take the same approach about other veteran players who there is no one behind on the depth chart who can step it up, you run that risk.
I really don't think there are any band aids that can be put on our team that will get us on the level of the Steelers, Pats, Ravens, Colts or Chargers in the immediate Future. I think the D End opposite Ellis has to be replaced more than Ellis but his contract and age have to be dealt with now. The question is how do you handle him going forward? We should have gotten rid of Coles a year or two ago while he had value and now we are stuck with a guy we can't trade who is a concussion from retirement that is taking up valuable cap space. We don't really have a ot of other Vets that need to be replaced other than Ellis or Coles. I would start grooming backups for Faneca and jenkins sooner than later because of age and injury though. This is a year to let the young guys play.
I think a big part of the problem is that in our 3 drafts since making the transition to a 3-4 we have yet to draft a 3-4 DE. There is no one being groomed, so unless we are targeting a solid young 3-4 DE in free agency there is no viable replacement. You cannot just cut ties with your best DE without a viable replacement. I don't know what the draft looks like for 3-4 DE's this year but I'd really like to see us take one on day one if available.
I don't have anything against Ellis at all. But on the other other hand i'm not against parting ways with him if they have a plan. I'm not against parting ways with any one other the Leon, Cotchery, Thomas jones, Revis, Rhodes, and Harris. SO LONG AS THERE IS A BETTER OPTION OUT THERE FOR TEAM ADVANCEMENT. I care for the Jets, not individual players other then the ones mentioned. So if it's bye bye Ellis and his 4.6mm dont let the door hit ya
This is what I don't understand for everyone screaming cut him. No matter what you think about him (i.e., overrated or damn good), he did SOMETHING last year, 1st half or not, and unless you have a solid replacement for him, which clammer to cut?
A big part of the problem is there was never a replacement signed or drafted. In 07 we drafted as if we were a player away from a Sb. Hopefully that position is addressed with Cb very high in the draft this year. I want Ellis gone but I do want it done with a sensible plan in place.
Because 94 has played a FULL season twice in his career. I like John Abe, but he could not stay healthy. Plus he did not want to be in NY anyway, he wasn't happy here, it was time to let him go.
People want to BITCH so bad about Abraham...Jeez. Mangold or Abraham? You choose...Not a tough choice.
No, just no...stupid idea. 2009 salary: $4.65 million 2010 salary: $3.35 million AYFKM?!! His skills on the field are well worth 3 or 4 million dollars...let alone the intangibles he brings with captainship, continuity, and leadership. All in all, his monies are a steal for the next two seasons...then it will be time for him to retire...as a Jet.
In hindsight there were other scenarios that would have worked out better than what they did with Coles, but that does not mean that cutting him would have been better. Even if he had been traded they would have needed to do something else at wideout. This is not a team that is deep at that position. So yeah, I am not saying don't do anything about Ellis. I am only saying if he's cut or traded, he will have to be replaced. By who? I also agree he's a far stronger presence than anyone available on the other side at DE.
