Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Abe offered the same bloated contract, only to turn it down? It wasn't like the Jets didn't make a serious run at the Sprained Vagina himself. Ellis was wise enough to take the money.
I don't believe so. I think he may have been offered a deal before he got hurt late in 2004 but once that happened and he missed the postseason I don't think he was offered a comparable deal post 2004.

We were able to get Nick Mangold, one of the best C in the NFL (who doesn't get hurt either) for him. I honestly doubt we would've been able to get that much for Sean Ellis. So while Abraham may be the better player than Ellis, the Jets ultimately still made the best move for the team.
Exactly correct we need better production from our DEs look around the league and see what other teams get from the DE position. Rex Ryan eats sleeps and breathes defense. Anyone who doesnt fit his mold will surely be gone if not this year definitely next. Id like to see a pass-rushing DE something we trully lack and have since the departure of JAbe.
If this is true the new regime has a clue. Cut all Dead Wood! Ellis is the first piece. Now if they can figure out how to trade Coles for picks we will be on our way!
It makes more sense to rework his deal than cut him. The guy is a solid NFL end who a team like Miami or NE would PU in a second. Unless they have a specific guy in mind to replace him dumping him is nuts.
If we start re-working deals on guys that are 32 years old, we'll be in a similar situation as we were in the early part of the decade. In terms of replacing him the guy I would love to get is Chris Canty from Dallas.
The guy was in on 60 tackles and had 8 sacks and people say he is not performing. That is more tackles and sacks than Richard Seymour.
Agreed. He plays almost every down and he is a solid player. Hopefully they can rework his contract and keep him here while that draft choice matures........
His job in the defense the last 3 years was to occupy 2 gaps and to hold his ground. He is an average pass rusher but he's very good against the run and he's consistent in that role. I expect if they switch to a 1 gap 3-4 that he would become even more valuable since he does have some ability to get to the qb. Ellis is one of the foundations of this defense. If you get rid of him you have to replace him with someone better and younger. Ellis has rarely been injured in his career. He's played in multiple systems. I do agree he's overpaid but replacing him is a lot more difficult then anyone thinks. Ellis and Kenyon Coleman are easy targets since they don't put up flashy numbers or get to the qb frequently. When 3-4 ends are doing their jobs you will rarely hear their name since the linebackers will be making the plays.
I'm not concerned with number per say. There were too many times where I saw him get blocked and he was unable to get off the block. That irritates me. If I had the choice between keeping him or Coleman, I would keep Ellis. But his pricetag is too high. We still have some cap issues.
Kris Jenkins wore down, but he commanded most of the OL's attention and was often double and triple teamed. Ellis had more opportunites one-on-one down the stretch.
32 isn't that old for a DE in the NFL who hasn't been operated on numerous times. The question is his production vs his value. If they can't make a reasonable deal at a reduced cost and you have a backup plan by all means unload him. I don't think Ellis is great but he is productive. That's the case with most of the top talent on our team by the way. There are realistically about 6 or 7 players on this team that don't fit into the catagory of productive replacable players.
Ellis had a pretty good Season, he?s not the best Runstuffer, but he usually gets the job done, and with two great runstoppers next to him on the Line, I think Ellis is the right piece there. DeVito/Mosely, Jenkins, Coleman, Pace, BT not really scary for a QB. Especially if you consider, that Rex likes to set his sceme up, to get a good 1-on-1 matchup in the passrush, instead of trying to create a free man to fly thou there. I just don?t see why we would downgrade our Front 7 if there?s no desperate need to do it. Try to make him accept a paycut, and everything is fine.
Ellis is adequate but his production does not equate to his pay. I saw we get younger and hungrier and send him on his way. I have a feeling Ryan knows the defensive side of the ball and will not have a problem replacing his production.
