http://www.thejetsblog.com/2009/02/19/shaun-ellis-out-of-the-plans/ Wanted to get some comments on who you guys would feel if the Jets actually parted ways with Ellis. Personally i would do it and use all this cap space to sign Haynesworth to play next to Jenkins. According to the link the jets are 18mm under the projected cap for next season now that the cut Bowens and Kassell. With another 4.6mm off we could make all sorts of moves in free agency. Baker isnt coming back next season and that would save us another couple of million bucks off the cap. Also they havent restructured any contracts, Moore, Rhodes etc. Bottom line..... We can get haynesworth, scott, leonhard, and still have left over to sign draft picks and depth. This can be done!!!!
He has never lived up to his bloated contract from 2004. The Jets obviously paid the wrong player (Ellis v. Abraham). Ellis is an average DE who has been paid as an elite DE. I would cut bait ASAP considering the cap savings.
Look, forget Lewis and Haynseworth, they would break the bank. Scott is going to want BIG money too. Jets fans live in some kind of la-la land. We also need a 1st or 2nd round pick for a CB AND another veteran FA CB. Scott, Leonhard, a CB, realistic. Lewis and Haynesworth are so far out of the realm of possibility... Reading this board at this time of year reminds me of taking a 218 pound twelve year old kid for a fantasy walk through a Willy Wonka chocolate factory. He aint gonna make it to the exit, he's gonna explode first, if he doesn't drown in his own saliva before that.
Yeah lets get rid of our sack leader from last year. Thats the way to jump start the defense next year.
Ellis is definitely pretty average and definitely overpaid. He's fairly solid, but better is always better... I don't really want Haynesworth. He's a good player, but in my opinion the talent that surrounds him makes him look that much better. He's going to cost a fortune, but he's even more injury prone than Jenkins and he's overrated. He'd be a good addition, but not the smartest move. Also, letting Baker go would be a huge mistake. F*** the haters.. Baker is a solid player, a good blocker and sure-handed. We need another TE besides Keller and Baker more than pulls his weight.
Yeah, wouldn't want to get of a player who had one whole sack the second half of the season. That's a stud right there. Ellis is overrated. Always has been, by both the Jets and this board. Unfortunately he's the best DE they have so they better have a plan if they let him go.
If we're going to cut any DE, make it Coleman. And I would rather keep him too. I could see a restructure for Ellis, but I wouldn't be too happy if we cut him. And we do need more than one TE. Baker has decent hands and is a good blocker. I see no reason to cut him either.
There are about 40 other Guys on the Team, who we should get rid of, before we should get rid of Ellis.
Ellis is a solid 3-4 DE and easily our best DE. Yes his contract is bloated and he's getting up there in years but they better have a SOLID replacement in mind if they plan on getting rid of him. They really need to draft a 3-4 DE in the early rounds. We havent drafted any 3-4 d-linemen since we switched over in '06.
Haynesworth coming to the Jets makes absolutely no sense for Haynesworth or the Jets. What we need right now is a DE with experience in two-gapping which Haynesworth doesn't have. He's looking for a system that will get him sacks, which we don't have, so he can continue to earn top tier money, which he won't do in a 3-4, so coming to the Jets would mean he'd have to be willing to take a pay-cut, which he won't do unless we're only an Albert Haynesworth signing away from winning the Super Bowl, which we're not. Haynesworth on the Jets looks great in Madden but it looks like shit in real-life for just about everybody involved. Ellis is the best 3-4 end on the team right now. If anyone needs to be upgraded it's Coleman. Solid backup but not a starter.
This is pretty accurate. Nobody thought that losing Randy Thomas would cause the Jets too much heartburn because he was widely seen as a good player looking for a star's payday. Then we got 6-10 in 2003 and 4-12 in 2005 and were starting all over again. Losing Pete Kendall in 2007 was a yawner until we realized that the Jet's offensive line just blew chunks with a hole at left guard, even if they did have young stars around the hole. The Jets need to KNOW who is going to play LDE for them next year before they decide to make a move like cutting Ellis. Their recent history suggests we're going to be very unhappy if they just cut bait and run without a plan.
I said this a while back. I think it's a no brainer. We only think Ellis is good because we don't have anyone better. Let's make some moves to clear dead wood a reshape the identity of this team. I was a strong proponent of getting rid of Ellis, Baker, BT, and Coles. Lets move in a different direction.
look how many sacks other 3-4 de's had...7-8 sacks is alot for a 3-4 de they are constantly double teamed
We had just signed Chad long term and watched him get hurt, Abe was an inujury prone player. It made no sense to give him a huge deal. He missed playoff games in 2 of his 3 postseason we made w/ him- that's not a player you pay big bucks to keep.
So there was a disucussion on wfan that was posted on Jets confidential and then on Jets blog that the Jets are considering cutting Ellis? Did Joe from the Bronx call in with the idea? Ellis is a very good 3-4 Defensive end. He is overpaid but the cost to cut him and then find a replacement that is even close to his talent is just not going to happen. Ellis and Jenkins are going to be a key part of Rex Ryans defense.
It would suck to see Ellis go, but I think at this point it has to be done. We need better production from our DE's and his contract is too pricey for his low production. Maybe we can bring him back at a lower price tag like we did with Marvin Jones, but I doubt it would happen.
