When we had Pennington, we had 2 deep threats (Coles and Moss), an underneath possession receiver (Chrebet), a solid line, 2 solid runningbacks, and an average defense. Paul Hackett chose to play to Pennington's strengths which was his accuracy and occasional deep ball from playaction. As we lost various members from the offensive line, and lost receivers, and gained receivers, and traded for receivers that we used to have, and lost runningbacks, and drafted 4-3 Cover 2 players, etc., etc., etc........we became a team with no offensive or defensive identity. When we had Favre, we had a revenge driven HOF, a rebuilt line, a better defense, and our deep threat was our HOF QB (and our new plaything named Dustin Keller). As we took the league by storm through our growing pains, and their lack of respect, we were exposed in the second half of the second Patriots game as a team very poorly coached. As our success put the flames of Favre's anger out, we fell apart all at once. Now we have a coaching staff who promises that they can deliver better gametime preparation and adjustments. They also promise to get the most out of our existing players by incorporating player specific strategies and not scheme specific strategies. Life in 2009 A.F. (After Favre) seems like the-end-of-all-that-is to some. For me, i see that we have some considerable promise. While i am expecting for our new staff to draft the best player available regardless of position, i am encouraged by a theory. A power running game + an above average defense + the ability to get the ball downfield = AFC Championship. The Steelers did it in Rothelisberger's rookie year, and the Ravens did it in Flacco's rookie year. We have the power running game. Our defense is average, and we cannot throw downfield. The upside is that all of our current offensive players are familiar with the OC and vice versa. We also have a few players that can stretch the field who are coming off of injury. Regardless of the draft or free agency, any newcomer will have to learn how we do things as an organization. That is an expected learning process. It is no secret that we need a pass rush. No secret that we need a defensive end to compliment Jenkins. No secret that we need secondary help. I think we draft Cushing from USC. He is someone that would push Gholston, and someone that we could groom and train with him as a tandem. I think we may get Bart Scott, and i'm hoping that we get Chris McAlister and move him to Free Safety. If not, i am not opposed to just Scott and Trevor Pryce. That being said, i think our first 3 draft picks will be OLB, WR, and S. The rest of the picks may be packaged, and i see us doing things in groups of 2's after selecting Cushing. For example, i see us drafting defensive end/ defensive tackle hybrids in the later rounds or next year to replace Ellis, Jenkins, and Pryce (should we get him). Contrary to popular belief, i think if we can stretch the field, and build on this defense, then i think we will compete for a championship in the next 4 years. Even with Kellen or Brett at quarterback. side note: I am curious to see how we handle the fullback position, but Lorenzo Neal or Tony Richardson would do fine by me. Both are able to create holes big enough for Rex Ryan to run through.
There's a better reason. There are none who would be first round picks in any other year but this one.
The steps towards contending in the NFL are pretty simple: 1. build an offensive line that can protect the QB and open up holes in the running game. 2. draft your QB, without whom nothing else will matter unless you are the 2000 Baltimore Ravens and develope him behind that line. 3. everything else. I don't see an argument for not taking a QB in the first round, assuming a good prospect is there at our pick, when you have the Jet's current strengths (offensive line, runningback) and weaknesses (pretty much everything else to some extent). Should we wait for a couple of years for Faneca and Woody to begin to drop out so we have to re-assemble the line before we put value into a high pick QB? I can see an argument for not reaching for a QB or trading up to get one, because we're not totally bereft at the position, but if Mark Sanchez is there at 17 the Jets would probably be really foolish to let him get by.
If you see what you believe is a franchise QB in Round 1 you get him, period. QB is the most important position on the team. You don't turn down chances to get one unless you already have one.
That's it eh? Well shit, let's all become GM's! Can we call you for tips on "everything else" when the shit hits the fan?
That's exactly it. QB is so much more important than any other position on the team that you always take the opportunity to get a good one if you think it's there.
Of all the QB prospects, Mark Sanchez? Spare me. It's not even like Jets don't have a QB prospect with bad footwork. Want to add another? Moreover, I am not really sold on QBs out of USC these days...
the only prob with drafting a qb is you're leaving your hopes and dreams for the next season (or three) at the curb. bye bye. adios. we want IMPACT players who will light up the j-e-t-s NNNNNOOOOOWWWWW (see Mr Gholston and/or Mr Lowery for further explanation). drafting a player -any player- to have an impact on our '2012 season' is what we should do (perhaps) but NOT what we DEMAND. serious question: would you draft a qb that would give us a 'great' shot at a ring in 4-5 years -or- draft any number of top players that would give us a 'better than average' shot at a ring this year, next year, etc? me? give me the players NOW. Christ, i'll probably be dead in 4 years anyway.
No, YOU want players now. I and many others want to build a team that will win consistently. Getting a franchise QB is essential to that endeavor. If the Jets can get a franchise QB in this draft, most Jets fans could care less if they have an impact next year. It doesn't take four or five years to develop a QB. A franchise QB will be good in one to three years. There is nothing precluding the Jets from getting a veteran to compete for the starting job AND drafting a franchise QB in Round 1 if they feel there's one available.
Tell me.... who is going to play CB opposite Revis? We have ONE CB on the entire roster. ONE. We need to go CB in the first round AND sign an FA CB. A WR? Coles, Crotch, Stuckey, Clowney, Wright and Smith... and you want another WR? With Suggs getting the franchise tag, it looks more and more like we will get Bart Scott to replace Barton. I agree we really don't need yet another unproven QB prospect. I think Sanchez isn't near as good as Lienart, and where is Lienart? On the bench sucking up salary.
The only way I would take a QB in the first round was if there were an ELWAY or a PEYTON sitting there. I mean this dude better be an OBVIOUS winner. Too many teams have drafted guys no. 1 who just didn't pan out. I'd rather draft to build the lines....they can take care of sub-par quarterbacks and help them become superstars!
A Peyton Manning comes along every 20 years my man And when they come you may not be in a position to get him If Peyton didn't decide to go back to school for his senior season, he would have fallen to us. What a difference this Franchise would be right now. We wouldn't even be having this conversation It would more be damn we need to win another SB before Peyton has to hang it up.
Yeah and other teams have drafted such studs as Vernon Gholston and DeWayne Robertson. I'd much rather chance it on a QB than an OLB or DT. You've got to trust in your GM and Coach. If they think they have a franchise QB take him. If not I doubt they'll draft another QB in the first round just to compete.
That's my point sir! Those "FRANCHISE QB's " only come along every so often.....that's why I would rather draft some other position....yeah, we bombed with Drob, and Gholston ain't looking too good either, but as an over all philosophy, that's MY preference
TRUE DAT brother.......but there's usually less money involved and I would rather develop a QB within our system (if we ever REALLY get one) Tom Brady is the best example of this, where you draft a smart, athletic game manager ( of course, he developed beyond their wildest dreams ) but other guys, like Garcia, Delhomme, etc............ That's why I want Ratliff to get a REAL look this year!
Did you really just start a thread by talking about what Paul Hackett did as if it was something good?
Big Ben Flacco Matt Ryan Rivers Manning Cutler in the last 4 years all became impact players in less than 3 years. QBs can develop quickly as well.
He chose to stay in school because he didn't want to come to the Jets. Either way, Jets weren't going to get him.
There was a part of me that always wondered that. Just makes you wonder how this organization is perceived from an outside standpoint.
