Don't underestimate an upgrade in RAM, I knew I had too little before but after adding ram I didn't know the boost would be this dramatic

Judging by the remarks in the comment section, I'm surprised you took a chance on your existing mobo at all. I don't think I've ever read a comment section without a single kind word. :grin: Just remember that combos usually have one great component and one so-so component. That's the only way they can sell at the combo price. You'll be fine with that 45nm proc but do yourself a favor and don't skimp on the quality of your RAM. If you overclock, DO NOT stay with the stock cooling option as its usually the weak link in most proc purchases. Cheers!!
Thanks Cman...I was just gonna pick up some Patriot 2 x 2 gb ram which is on sale at Newegg for like $40. I just wanted to make sure my current case would handle the new mobo (mainly electrically speaking). As I don't want to shell out 300 to 400 to upgrade to a quad core, I figured that this would hold me over for another year or two. I'm assuming the combo mobo is the lesser of the two items as the CPU will be Intel.
You can get a new Phenom II x4 920 for like $170. I just built a new system from Newegg with the 920, gigabyte mobo, 4gb of ocz reaper, 1tb hdd for like $500 total.
How's the stability of the AMD chip...haven't heard good things? And can you find that chip w/mobo and 4gb ram for under $200, cause that's basically the deal I'm getting right now?
The Phenom II is rock solid. Seriously, I have it OC'd with the regular stock cooler and its very stable. This chip is much much better than the old Phenoms. I think the stability really depends on the motherboard you pick also. Also, keep in mind the price of the motherboards. You get a very good socket AM2+ board for like $75. The i7 boards are a lot more.

All I really wanted to do was play Guitar Hero III, and I've found an open-source program that lets me play all the songs on the disc, without the freeze-ups: http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/
I recently bought a new HP pavilion laptop. It came with Norton360 trial. When the trial expired,i payed for an additional year. Was this a mistake? I have never used Norton before,and now find my computer slow as hell. It won't load a lot of pages on the 1st try,and forget about video. It will stop in the middle of youtube videos,and anything Flash it won't even load. Some videos it won't play at all,it says IE was unable to find page. I tried Firefox too,no difference. Is it Norton doing this? Or does HP just suck ass?
To me that was a huge mistake, there are so many awesome free alternitives (AVG), that paying for Norton is a waste of money. Norton is a resource hog, so running on even a decent set up will slow your pc down a noticable amount. Check all the settings you have for Norton, my guess is that Norton is blocking what you are tying to do and its not HP. HP is just a brand, its the insides that matter haha. Disable Norton and try the things your aren't able to do and let me know how it turns out.
Norton antivirus = A virus. Nortons is total junk and you can get better for free. I think AVG and alot of others have already been pointed out.
If you guys had to choose would you pick a intel dual core around 3.0 ghz or an AMD quad core around 2.6 ghz. I think the dual would work better for running a single application like gaming, whereas the quad would work better if i was working on 7 spreadsheets, watching youtube, and transferring 9 files at the same time. Thoughts? Ideas? I'm upgrading from newegg and can't decide which one is the better route.
One was the AMD phenom quad core 9750 black edition 2.6 i belive. I forget the intel one except it was 3.0 ghz. I think the intel quad core is too $$$$ for my taste.

The X3 720 is a great processor... but its AM3 socket which requires an AM3 motherboard that costs $175 and up and your pretty much required to buy DDR3 RAM which can also break the bank. So your $175, + say $150 for motherboard, and say $100(minimum) for the ram = $425 depending on the MB and Ram you buy. But the plus side... this system is pretty much future proof.
Yeah,it really sucks. This computer runs slow as shit. I don't even think i can fully disable Norton without completely erasing it. What a waste

Not a site in particular, just the internet in general. I've seen it mess with posting in forums, downloads, etc.. Stick with avg antivirus, and Comodo firewall, and your all set.
