My second attempt at a Mock draft for the Jets. This is my predictions as of 2/16/09.....not late April. The Combine and Free Agency will change my last Mock I will submit just before the draft. As much as I really want Sanchez, I believe he's not going to be available at #17.......Niners are a Team that will look at him. These are just some players I believe would be beneficial to the NY Jets, not knowing Combine results and Free Agency. I know alot won't agree with my selections, which is fine, please give some sound reasoning.....why you like or dislike the pick. Rd 1) Jeremy Maclin WR, Mizzou............Jets go with the BAP at # 17, hell if he runs well, he won't be available at 17. Maclin just might fall since there aren't a lot of teams with a WR as a glaring need that draft before the Jets. I believe the Saints, Texans, GB, Denver etc....will go defense. IMO, there are more teams from #18 on that could use a WR....Bears, TB, Miami ..... Coles day seemed to be numbered. Brad Smith may be a goner too. Maclin, Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey, & Wright....would be fine with me. Rd 2) Louis Delmas, S, Western Mich.......May be gone when the Jets pick, hard to tell, small school could hurt him. If the Jets get Leonard...all bets off. I don't expect any Safety to go in Rd 1. The Jets might move up a bit in Rd 2 to secure Delmas. Looks like this kid has a prosiming future and did well at the Senior Bowl. From what I've heard this kid is a football junkie.....Film study and Loves Football. Rd 3) Darius Butler CB, UConn.............Good CB that might surprise. Seems to have good coverag skills and adequate speed. Only 5'11" but has nice timing and leaping ability. Some have him rated in late Rd 2.....Rd 3 is a possibility. Rd 4) Scott McKillop MLB, Pitt............Lunch-pail player who''s always around the ball. Solid Tackler and hitter. Has the strenght to play inside in a 3-4. Not fast, but has "football smarts" and instincts that makes him play quicker. Played behind H.B. Blades and may become a better NFL player. Rd 5) Glen Coffee RB, Bama...........Had a great 2008!! Over 1300 rushing yards and is a good receiver out of the Backfield. Doesn't have blazing speed and only 1 good year keeps him in rd 5. Good Trio......TJ, Leon & Coffee.....I'd be thrilled. Rd 6) Pannel Egboh DE, Stanford........Could develop into a rotational 3-4 DE. Has shown burst of a decent pass rush. Still learning the game, only played 1 year of H.S. Football. Rd 7) Anthony Hill TE, North Carolina St............Good Blocker that has nice size, not much of an offensive threat, but would be a good value . Baker is Too expensive and casn get similar results with Hill. I expect Baker (Cap Room) and Franks to be gone.
I like this mock except for one thing, I think we will definitely address our front seven within the first 3 rounds. If we take one S or CB I think our next defensive pick will either be DE/LB. If Maclin slides to us I'd be pretty happy about that pick. I also like Delmas, Butler, and Coffee. Good mock overall, I'm curious to who you expect us to sign in FA.
It's hard to tell the Jet's FA direction. I don't believe the Jets are going to spend money like they did last season, they don't have enough cap room. Leonard is probably the most likely FA to join the Jets. Scott could also come over form Baltimore. Both players would fill huge needs on our defense. I still believe the Jet are going to sign Leftwich or Sims. I don't believe Woody's banter saying he's happy with Kellen, Rat & Ainge.
Round-by-Round 1 - Not a fan of Jeremy Maclin -he's a spread wideout that's all about speed. It will take him at least one full season to become a half-way decent route runner. I'd rather reach for Sean Smith here or even a different, more complete WR like Hakeem Nicks. 2 - Can't complain about the Louis Delmas pick -he's as smart as they come, a lot like Bama's Rashad Johnson...expect Delmas is a much better pro prospect. 3 - Right now, Darius Butler looks like a mid-to-late second rounder. We can only hope that he falls to third. He's a better corner prospect than his former teammate, last year's UCONN Tyvon Branch. 4 - Scott McKillop is an inside 'backer that I'd like to see on the Jets, but the fourth round may be too high for a guy that lacks a lot of upside and athleticism. In the fourth, I think we should address depth along either of the lines. 5 - Here's what I said about Coffee the day he declared for the draft - 6 - Egboh will go much higher than this based on upside and potential alone. I like the position chosen, but there's slim chance PE will be here this late. 7 - I really like this pick - Hill was turning out to be one of the best tight ends in the ACC before he tore up his knee. He has surprisingly solid hands and deceptive speed - but you're right, his biggest strength is blocking. High risk/reward.
Appreciate the comments. I'm not thrilled with alot of our options at #17. If Maclin is available the Jet's have to consider him. While I love Sean Smith & Hakeem Nicks, I'm not willing to reach for them in FEB at 17. Trade down 8 to 10 spots and I'm all for it. Things may change in April and both could project higher. You know Smith & Hicks are 2 of my favorites, I'm just all about value, and right now they are reaches at 17. I hope you're wrong about Coffee, I was certainly impressed with his 2008 campaign, granted he was their workhorse....1300 yards in 2008 is something to take notice. I have a close friend who loves the Tide and swears by Coffee. We'll see how he transitions to the NFL. I almost went with Kory Sheets instead of Coffee. I thought HIll would become an outstanding TE, he can become a steal in Rd 7. Probably one of the top blocking TE's in this draft.
What happened to our other 4th round selection? We have Washington's (#111, Kendall trade) and our own (#114).
Wrong..........Had to pay the Saints back a 4h rd pick. I understand you are new here, this has been talked to death on this board. Here's an earlier post of mine: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some people aren't sure of the Jet's picks. Some common misconceptions I've seen.... The Jets will get a 2nd from New Orleans if they resign Vilma after Free agency. Wrong! Once Vilma becomes a Free agent, the deal is over...no second. Tanny probably could have done better in this trade. The Shockey deal thru a Monkey wrench into the process. What about Kris Jenkins 3 & 5 picks......those picks were given to Carolina last year. Here's the Current Jet's Picks for April's Draft. Please remember they will change from the 4th round to the 7th when comp pick are added (we'll get pushed back). I don't expect the Jets to get any comp picks. I believe there is a clause if Favre retires after 1 year, the Jets get GB's 7th rd pick in 2010. Rd 1.........#17 Rd 2.........#52 Rd 3.........#77(from New Orleans) Rd 4........#111 (from Washington) Rd 5........#146 Rd 6........#177 Rd 7........#209 We lost a 3rd round pick to GB (Favre) & a 4th to New Orleans (Vilma deal)
Can you provide a source to this information? Nowhere to I remember hearing or reading anything about the Jets having to send a 4th to NO as part of the Vilma trade and even to this day, if you Google "2009 NFL Draft", the links I clicked on show the Jets with two 4th round picks.
Harris...........you're new to this site, so relax. Trust is earned on this site. Everyone on this draftboard knows I don't give out false info. Here's a link........Sorry to burst your bubble, the Jets don't have two 4th rd picks.. The Jets' have to return last year's 4th round pick they got for Vilma and receive N.O's third this year. I eat, breath and live this stuff.......so I know what's going on!!! http://www.thejetsblog.com/2008/12/12/news-vilma-trade-to-net-jets-a-third-rounder/
He deserves his high horse, although al he was trying to do is tell you to be a bit more respectful. You can not demand respect, you earn it. Acting like an asshole to someone who already has a ton of respect around a site is the quickest way to get labeled negatively. Your well on your way to doing just that.
I'm somewhat skeptical of going with a WR that early. I wouldn't be too upset, but I'd rather see another position addressed. It really depends on how we do in free agency. If Delmas is around that late, it should be an easy one. Same deal with Butler. I'd expect him to be chosen higher. That would be a tremendous two rounds. Is McKillop a good fit as an ILB in the 3-4? The last three choices all look intriguing..
Really like this draft, but I like Beckwith out of LSU a little bit more than I like McKillop in the 3rd - 4th round area. Beckwith is probably more of a 4th. but other than that, great mock.
Beckwith's going to get drafted pretty high, but I really don't see him as a good fit for our defense. He's undersized for the 3-4 - at the college level he got pushed around and had a hard time shedding blocks. His speed is his best attribute - he could run in the 4.5s at the combine. I see Beckwith as a 4-3 linebacker in the pros.
I'm fine with Maclin, Delmas would be a steal there, Butler probably won't make it to the 3rd, the rest is fine. I'd prefer Jeremiah Johnson to Coffee in the late rounds though.
Ok, I have personally seen every one of Coffee's carries through his years at alabama. I have to say his one drawback is his "shiftiness" he will run through people not around. He is a great situational back though with some serious power. If you need one yard on 4th down this kid will get you 3. I think he will actually run a decent 40 time being in the 4.5 neighborhood, and will test well in everything. I think round 4-5 pick is a deal for this guy. Your right he would have seen his production drop off next year with the other backs, but that shouldn't be a know on him because Ingram and Richardson are some special backs you will be hearing on draft day in a few years. One guy from bama I would love to see us get is Rashad Johnson FS. He is the fastest guy on the team so expect around 4.3 type 40 yard dash time. He understands defensive schemes being Sabans on field coach the past 2 years, and have I mentioned he played running back until his sophmore year? This guy will only get better and better. Expect him to be a Bob Sanders type safety. Forget the Central Michigan kid, Rashad has been playing in the SEC his whole career and is more NFL ready.
