http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afceast/0-5-66/Jets-Rushmore--Namath--Martin--Chrebet--Klecko.html Who would be in your version of "Jet Rushmore"? edit: This would be a pretty cool sig idea if one of the photoshop guru's on here could make it. OT: For some reason I was unable to paste the entire article.
Jets MT Rushmore is Sonny Werblin, Weeb Ewbank and Joe Namath. Lots of great players but none had the impact on the Jets that these 3 had.
this was mostly voted on by the youngins with no sense of history. Hell Brett Freakin Favre is tenth on the voting list, and he only played for a single season, and not even a great season at that. I agree Maynard over Wayne, but really even though Maynard was way more talented, and the much better player, Wayne really was the only bright spot in those disaster years of Kotite, he held a few NFL records for most receptions in first two seasons until Boldin broke it. Wayne truly was the fan favorite, he was Mr. third down, and he was the Green Lantern. Wayne holds a special kind of skill and charisma that only a rare few ever have, and its that reason that Wayne is on the list.
Wayne was a fan favorite so its tough to keep him off. So guy on espn wrote in Fireman Ed. Come on that douche gets enough credit for nothing.
Why was even on the list to be considered!! Favre over Pennington is a joke in terms of importance to the Jets organization thru the years.
You listed the very reasons he absolutely deserves to be on there. Maynard was great...no doubt about it, but there are arguments that he is not even the best WR in Jets history.
I agree that Maynard wasn't the best WR in Jets history but Chrebet isn't close to the best either. Hard to see how Chrebet impacted this organization other than being a fan favorite. If Chrebet never played for the Jets it has little impact in the history of the franchise or it's current status today. Ring of fame yes, Mt. Rushmore, I don't think so.
Martin is def on there. Chrebet would go over Maynard for me. No offense to the old timers, but Chrebet always played with his heart on his sleeve and left it all on the field.
He is 2nd in all time receptions on the team so he did have an impact. But in Chrebet's case he isn't on the list because he was an all-time great, he's on the list because of his gutsy style of play and his never give up attitude and the admiration he received from the fans. He was always overlooked, the Jets kept bringing in WRs like Jeff Graham, Alex Van Dyke (2nd round pick), Dedric Ward and yet none of them were able to get Chrebet off the field. It?s a testament to his determination and should be celebrated. There's no question that he isn't the best WR we ever had, and yet him being on the Jets Mount Rushmore is a perfect parallel to his career.
I agree Chrebets best charachteristic was that he was overlooked. That doesn't make him gutsy compared to guys like Marvin Powell who most Jets fans don't even know who played at an incredible high level for years with guts on every play not just the glory plays. This organization as a team doesn't exist without Weeb, Namath and Werblin it would have moved or died as an after thought to the Giants. Everyone else was just a player.
Powell gets overlooked in general and I do think we should celebrate those guys who are now forgotten and that is one of the Jets biggest issues IMO.
Does Curtis Martin Ring a bell to anyone. He will be our only Hall of Famer of the last 20 years!!! DUH!!!! Chrebet was great hard nose football player and Jet that was Highly overrated by our fanbase. Namath, Maynard and Curtis Martin! Lets send our best against other teams best.
I should be working... but couldn't resist trying this. I think the result is a little comical, but hopefully will inspire someone to do a better job!
