For those of you who love the idea of taking Mark Sanchez at 17 overall, him being one of my own top 5 to take at that spot, there is a strong possibility he is sitting there. The only teams that are in dire need of a QB are the Lions, Chiefs, and 49ers. Each pick 1st, 3rd and 10th respectively. The Jaguars at #8 have been thrown out there as a maybe, but Gerrard has done well and their OL was decimated last year, destroying their run first offense and making life hell for their offense. They will not take Sanchez due to the fact that they draft too high for a prospect who only started 16 games, despite his ability. The money outweighs the ability - something that is always factored into the decision making process in the War Room. Other factors do play into him being there at 17. Do those forementioned teams trade down and take him later... the only team would be San Fransisco, but recent reports have them saying they are not interested. Take that with a grain of salt for now, because when it comes to the draft, everyone lies. Minnesota is a team that must be watched over the Jets shoulder.... They could go from 22 to 16 and take Sanchez before the Jets, but after making the playoffs and Jackson flashing some ability as he progresses may have them think otherwise. Sanchez almost makes perfect sense at 17, even with the debates of Clemens and Ratliff or maybe a veteran QB... but why not have it all? Clemens/Ratliff or a Vet start this upcoming season, and Sanchez sits for one year. I truly believe Sanchez is going to need to sit for an entire season before he is ready, which makes the QB competition amongst the other 3 QBs. Clemens, who is on the last year of his contract, may get the nod to see if bringing him back is worth it. If he does not do well, he was keeping the seat warm for Sanchez. If he does do well, and would have to do extremely well - a Leinart/Warner situation emerges, but Sanchez is hopefuly a better QB than Leinart... some do believe that. Me too. Ratliff, the it guy at the moment. Shows great potential. But he is still not NFL ready as of right now. He needs more time to develop. I am a fan of his preseason performace, but when the green shades are taken off, he cannot start right away unless this preseason is one for the ages. The CS knows this as well. A Veteran QB may also work as a stop gap for sanchez coming in... finding the right vet is key. One that would be glad to help Sanchez for a year or two while he sits and learns. The way Kitna did for Palmer. (I don't know how much Kitna helped, but he is a devout christian, he probably did the right thing.) In closing, this is purely hypothetical but logical.. I hope my thoughts have helped those who may not have been sure about the QB situation, and a possibility that may happen come April 25. Cheers.
I have no problem with Sanchez. I only mentioned Freeman because of the possibility of those two teams (San Fran and KC) drafting a QB. He could fall to us, but you have two new coaches replacing the old ones. Unless the guy is usually lights out, Coaches look for there own guys. Come to think of it, does anyone the stats for new coaches to new QBs? That might help to add some weight to the possibilities in which direction they might look to go
k.c won't draft a qb with their #1.it's not the patriot way and pioli has the ship now.s.f. is the wild card for sure.i hope he's gone sowe can take a defensive player who will/should start day 1 without the controversey of passing on sanchez.btw i hope its cushing we take
This makes no sense. Ratliff has sat for 2 years already and by all accounts has been extremely sharp not only in the heralded preseason he had but throughout the season. His second season he sat behind Favre and had to learn an incredible amount about the QB position. Yet, you state that Sanchez will be starter ready after 1 season, yet Ratliff is not NFL ready. That just does not make sense. Ratliff is positively more NFL ready than Sanchez now, and next season too. Why are you so sure that Sanchez is a better prospect than Ratliff? Pre-season or not Ratliff has shown NFL franchise QB potential. Why give up on that for yet another prospect? The Jets simply do not need Sanchez at all. Period.
And what if Ratliff doesn't pan out, and the Jets didn't take the shot at Sanchez? Its easy to do this all day. To sit there and know that Sanchez isn't needed due to the preseason wonder doesn't help either. I am excited to continue to see Ratliff progress, I'm not handing him the keys to the franchise right away. I took the shades off and I see what is really going on... The Jets have a terrible situation at QB, only die hard Jets fans such as us truly believe that we have a secret waiting, but the rest of the NFL doesn't think so. I don't even know if our FO thinks so. Ratliff's next test is 1st stringers in preseason. If he embarrasses them, then he's probably ready. I'm rooting for the kid, but reality has to set in here. The Jets need more than what they have. This is all hypothetical with Sanchez. Same with Ratliff - pure "what ifs" and "hope fors". No true facts.
There is really no reason at all to think that Sanchez at this point has a better chance at being the franchise QB the Jets need. But we will never know unless we give him a shot. In my view, Sanchez is a much much larger risk than Ratliff at this point for many reasons, and with three QBs on the roster already all picked by this GM, to choose another unproven questionable QB in the draft, esepcially the first round is just not a good move. Even with being from Utah and a Juco transfer, Ratliff has shown more potential on the NFL level than Sanchez.
If Sanchezs sitting there at 17 its an easy pick IMO. The Jets do not have a franchise QB on the roster and Sanchez has that potential. I still think Kellen or ratliff could be the guy, but not drafting a prospect like Sanchez at 17 if he is there would be silly. That said i highly doubt he falls past the 49ers at 10.
I don't think Sanchez makes it out of the top 5 let alone all the way to 17, if he somehow miraculously does, count your blessings Jets fans because we will have found our franchise QB, finally.
well the better chance comes from pedigree, and game film...he has better footwork than anyone that is on the Jets right now. Ainge will never become a NFL pro starter. Well, that's easy to do. One is coming out of college. I think Sanchez could do more in his 1st year than Ratliffs could
This draft reminds me of the end of 1999 going into 2000. Its slightly similar. The old vet goes down, we need a franchise guy but he needs to sit for one year. The only difference is that Vinny played in 2000 and Chad took over in 01. well, clemens or ratliff can play in 2009 and sanchez can take over the next year.
my gut feeling tells me that those teams won't spend the money on a kid that has 16 games experience... at 17 is a different story
Look dont get swept up in the hype Sanchez has BUST written all over him this is a case of desperate fans looking to anything because of a perceived QB crisis. Sanchez benefited from having superior talent around him and still wasn't impressive. I think Ratliff or Clemons will do just as well if not better than Sanchez for at least the next 2 seasons. We need help defensively and a serious threat at WR and another RB wouldn't hurt what if Jones goes down then what. Sanchez is a big risk I wouldn't touch him we have seen how 1 season wonders whether DE or QB has worked out in the past.
Ratliff was on the practice squad as a WR his first year so really he has had 1 year under the system. Ainge was on IR & was banned for four games for drugs so this is like his 1st year. Kellen has had three years to beat out Chad & could not do it we all know Chad was not the answer. Everyone was saying how we would have all this money if Favre left well now take that money & fix the D (Corner, Saftey & MLB) in free agency. In the draft first round get a franchise QB (Sanchez if he is gone then Freeman) second round get a WR (Nicks, Hayward Bay).
I think Sanchez will be there for us & this is why. 1 Detroit will take Stafford they need a face for there franchise & a QB. 2 Kansas City will not take a QB Pioli will take a defensive player & Thigpen played well last year. 3 Jacksonville just gave Garrard a huge contract & there O line was a mess last year. 4 San Francisco Hill has really played well & they are going to keep Smith & the those two will battle it out for the spot. This is why I think that Sanchez will be there for us to take.
There's always a chance that Seattle could take him too - also, if he slips, we'd have to worry about someone trading ahead of us to get him.
If someone trades up for him all bets are off. Do you think Seattle is ready to give up on Hasselback ? Everyone says they are taking Crabtree ?
