While I was surfing through youtube, I found this video. It has every single throw that Mark Sanchez made during the 2009 Rose Bowl. As a quality control coach, this is what I spent countless hours doing, cutting game film so that the coaches only see the play, not all the time in between. That is why this is a very good video.

Look at Sanchez's footwork. He does not step into his throws and is flat footed. This could be a huge problem in the faster NFL as footwork in the pocket can mean the difference between a sack and a touchdown throw. I'm not passing judgment on Sanchez, as I think he has all the potential in the world to be a great NFL qb, but this is certainly a huge weakness and needs to be addressed.

You're a quality control coach? Do you work for a college team in Charleston?

I don't really see what you mean - his footwork actually looks really good on a lot of his completions. He squares his shoulders and fires the ball.

As a quarterback, you're supposed to stay on your toes and rotate your body towards your wideout. I see a lot of that from Mark Sanchez.

There are some Matt Stafford like this as well - they have very similar footwork.

Both seem to rely on arm strength more than proper body position - other than that, both look good in the pocket.

I see what you are getting at. He doesn't step into his throws every single time. I'm impressed with what he can do without doing that, but hopefully that can be improved on. He has everything else.... he is raw - i think he sits for a year if drafted by the Jets and the QB competition continues with Ratliff and Clemens maybe a Vet QB...

who were you a QC Coach for??

I worked as an assistant quality control coach at a small D-3 school in Rochester, NY. Got to start somewhere, right?

I know it seems very slight, but believe me, it makes a huge difference. There lacks any movement in his feet when Sanchez throws the ball. The back leg should pivot and the front leg should step into the throw.

I hate Tom Brady, but he has the best footwork for a qb I have ever seen. Disregard the first throw, because he shortens it because of the defender, but look at his footwork for a basis for comparison:

He can work on his footwork but this video tells me he is faster & has a better arm than I thought he had if he is there at 17 we need to get him.

I get what your saying, but it is a quick fix. I prefer he throw off the front of his foot on his back leg and many times it seems like he is throwing off his heel, or flat footed. In the NFL it is rare that a QB is in perfect position to throw a ball. What is encouraging is his quick release, ability to escape pressure and fast decision making (except for the sack) he is ready to go.

The biggest problem with Sanchez is that WE DO NOT NEED HIM.

I agree that he is a wonderful prospect, however, I guarantee that every single coach at USC was trying to work with him on his footwork and it concerns me that this problem has not been fixed.

Regardless, he will need at least a year or two on the bench to work on his technique.

I watched the vid and what jumped out at me was not his footwork but Sanchez blowing passes even when there was no pressure on him. He has a strong arm and sometimes threads the needle between defenders to make a highlight film pass, but sometimes he seems to be throwing to invisible receivers. I just don't see why we should take him. Sanchez's strengths and weaknesses are too close to KC's strengths and weaknesses to justify using a first round pick on him. And KC also has that invisible receiver problem, I'm putting my hopes on Ratliff.

The #1 thing that QBs need to work on from college to the NFL is footwork, it doesn't concern me considering his arm strength and athleticism. Sanchez still has the potential to be an amazing Quarterback, I take him at #17 without blinking.

CarpetBagger -- Just want to give you a heads up on something. I do school-based research. Specifically, looking at the classroom behavior of children with behavioral problems. Anyway, we use a lot of pretty cool observational software and statistics that might be of interest. If you are interested in learning more, let me know....

Actually having seen this video I really really want him :D. He has some flaws but all stuff that can be worked on.. however I don't think we'll draft him... :(

His biggest problem is he stares down receivers, and that leads to him throwing to those invisible receivers when he quickly tries to find a new target. Yes his footwork is a huge problem, thats why some of his throws are completely off target. In college you can get away with it, in the NFL you cannot.

Brady's footwork was not great at Michigan. The only thing he really had going for him was a strong arm and that's the reason he slid so far in the draft. Do you think footwork is coachable enough that Sanchez is still a good franchise QB prospect? Because I think the only way he slides to the Jets at 17 is if something is a bit off (like Chad's arm strength was) and makes people hesitate about picking him higher. Otherwise he's going to go in the same range that Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler did.

Who is going to pick him higher? SF, I doubt it. Detroit, no, they will get Stafford. KC? Maybe if they don't trade for Cassell, remember who their GM is. Nobody else needs or wants a Sanchez that picks ahead of the Jets. Of course somebody could always trade up.

I think this is exactly why Pete Carrol said Sanchez needed another year of college ball. I just can't shake this feeling that Sanchez will bust.

Amen... Clemens and Sanchez are pretty similar. Strong arms, decent size, decent mobility, and poor footwork. Why do we want two of the same type of QB? You're better off continuing to develop Clemens than drafting Sanchez.

Pete Carrol is a jerk off - he's just pissed because his QB situation isn't a sure thing going into 2009's season.
