I didn't believe the cap space talk should take up space in the Favre thread, so I made a separate thread about it. According to the Star Ledger, thanks to Barrett's release and Favre's retirement, we are now actually 17 million under the cap. Who would you like to see the Jets sign with that amount of money, but more importantly, how many solid players CAN they sign with that money? I'm thinking they could get 2 of the 3 Ravens linebackers and a veteran QB.
Jets Cut Barrett, Now Under Cap by Dave Hutchinson Wednesday February 11, 2009, 6:29 AM The Jets yesterday announced the release of veteran cornerback David Barrett, a move that'll save the team $5.1 million on the salary cap. The release of Barrett leaves the Jets roughly $4 million under the projected 2009 salary cap of $124 million, according to NFLPA cap figures. If quarterback Brett Favre retires or is released, the club will save another $13 million on the cap. That would leave the Jets with at least $17 million heading into the start of free agency on Feb. 27. The club is expected to make other moves to free up more cap space before free agency begins. Barrett, a nine-year veteran, played the past five seasons with the Jets after signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent following four seasons in Arizona. He started 37 of 69 games and had 247 tackles and 12 interceptions as a Jet. Last season, he played in 11 games in a reserve role and was inactive for five games
This article is totally WRONG or every other article on the planet is concerning the Jets cap. Take your pick but if you think the Jets are more than 1.5 under you are crazy.
It is pretty obvious this article does not have accurate information. We are probably at most 7-8 mil under at this point but as I have been saying all along the cap will not be an issue for us this offseason.
This site is usually quite reliable: http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html According to its numbers, and removing Favre's salary, we're at about 119.8 Million. That puts us a little over 3 million under the projected cap of 123 million. I'm really not sure how they possibly came up with 17 million under. That's terrible. You have to figure that Bowens and Baker go away and Moore either restructures or is cut. Brad Kassel's another likely cut. Between the 3 of them, we could see savings of an additional 10+ million, although Moore restructuring would bring that number down.
A reasonable margin of error for the Star Ledger, apparently. Get ready for the front page articles in which they state that 14,000,006 people were killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq.
According to the Daily News, after cutting Barretts 5 million cap hit, we're still 5 million over the cap. take out the 13million for Favre, i think we're around 8 million under, with more cuts, and restructuring to come. Any way you cut it, we should be in pretty good shape to build an awesome D!!!!
They could also restructure Rhodes, Pace, Jenkins, and maybe Faneca. I could see the FO freeing up considerable cap space over the next week.
This is a good article by them showing what we can do: http://www.nyjetscap.com/salarycapcuts09.html And that's not counting Favre retiring as well.
My understanding was that we were almost all of Favre's salary OVER the cap to start with. So with him retiring and Barrett being cut (which saves 3 or 4M ) the Jets should be a few million under the cap right now. But we still have to sign the rookies. So with the expected rookie salaries, the Jets are about at the cap right now. My recollection is also the same as reported by Jason (who's the top Jets capologist on the web): http://www.nyjetscap.com/salary.html I'd trust these numbers much more than what was reported by the Star Ledger. So forget about a big Jets free agent signing binge (unless we restructure a bunch of guys).
as long as there is room to sign a few FAs and draft picks the team is fine... re-structuring Rhodes and Pace still need to happen.
we are 17 million under end of discussion not that difficult dont need all that capologist bullllshit
