He will get his money in the form of a signing bonus instead of a roster bonus. That way the cap hit is much lower. The Jets need to keep this line together next year. Moore, Mangold and Brick should all be here long term.
Moore is the best run-blocker on the O-Line - It has been said by the other linemen repeatedly in interviews. If Rex Ryan wants to run the ball then he can't get rid of his best run-blocker, especially without a replacement.
Yeah, I said it was obviously about the money. As compared to general expressions of him being a good player or not - the point is whether he is overpaid or not. Obviously. Glad to see you agree. That really warms my heart.
How are you going to make that claim? He counts 6 million against the cap this season. Mangold's 1.6 million would make him the best value on the OL by far. I do like Moore, and I'm not a big fan of changing out pieces on a unit that relies on its chemistry to succeed (a big reason why the Pats' O-line tends to have such success), but come on. He needs to restructure in order to stay in green.
Agreed. I would never have imagined that I'd be more impressed with Moore than Faneca, but Moore was solid, and like someone else said (sorry for the brain lapse, I'm bad with names) continuity on the line is key.
The Jets are not stupid in looking for a guard. They still have a very poor short yardage running game, Faneca's pass protection skills are totally diminished and aren't likely to improve, Moore is merely league average, and Woody is getting up there in years. They have very little in terms of quality depth or versatility on their offensive line, and it would behoove them to look into a Duke Robinson/Phillip Loadholt/Michael Oher type who could feasibly play both positions. There is a shortage of athleticism on this team and that extends to the offensive line as well. Outside of Ferguson, who is mostly a waste of athleticism, and Jenkins, who the defense became entirely dependent on, there are few guys in the trenches on either side of the ball who present the opposition with issues at the point of attack. That needs to change. -X-
I think Mangold does on your second point, but on your first paragraph, I agree. Even if Moore restructures and stays, the OL unit needs depth. Right now it has none. The Jets were lucky no starters went down with major injuries last year.
When the O-line was terrible a few years ago, Moore was a revolving door on passing plays. Penny got obliterated a few times because of Moore's blown assignments. Now that he's on a much better line, he's decent at best as a pass blocker - so I don't know if he's actually gotten better, or if he's just product of the line - probably a little of both. However, he is a very good run blocker, so I wouldn't mind keeping him on IF we can rework his contract - he shouldn't be getting paid anything close to an all-pro. Rework, or release. We could also try drafting/trading for a RG or RT. If we get a premiere RT, we can move Woody inside to RG.
