Great question! I do not EVER remember PSLs mentioned at the announcement for the WSS or the joint stadium Here is the blurp for the announcement of the new stadium & you will note there is zero mention of PSLs http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/...l___will_.html
I don't know if PSLs were ever mentioned or not mentioned, but I do remember acting governor Richard Coty who was then the interim governor of the state of NJ following the James McGreevey fiasco meeting with the Sports Authority and the Giants/Jets and then, later in a press conference, touting the fact to the public that the new stadium would have "shared costs" and that it was going to the best way to reduce costs. The implication (and in some case more than an implication) was that because of naming rights and signage and many more corporate boxes, that PSLs would not be necessary or would be held to a minimum. That's the way this thing was sold, both privately and publicly. Now we've got horrendous PSLs and very little talk of how much revenue the naming rights and signage will take up to cover costs. All we ever hear about is how much the exhorbitant PSLs are.
Well strictly speaking it is shared cost because the NYJ portion is 1/2 of the total instead of the entire total so the gov spoke the truth. Also sorry to say I think U PRESUMED there would be no PSLs due to joint ownership but that was never/ever mentioned at either the WSS or the joint stadium annoucement. Just think what the PSL charges would be if the NYJs footed the entire bill for a new stadium all by there lonesome self.
Judging by the current, ridiculously overpriced PSLs in this "shared-cost" stadium and given the current economic conditions, the WSS could quite possibly have resulted in one of the largest financial collapses of any sports franchise in history. I am talking bankrupcy. The WSS would have been twice the cost of this stadium without the "shared cost" factor, resulting in basically a stadium that cost 4 times as much... 4 TIMES! Then what? Instead of $20,000 PSLs, you now start trying to sell $80,000 PSLs per seat, with ticket prices not being $400, but rather $1600 per seat? The thing would have collapsed under it's own weight and become the laughing stock of the business world.
The more I read, the worse I feel. I've got 1979 seniority (thought the Jets say it's 1981 - I am in a dispute) and currently sit in the last row of the lower level, end zone, under the mezz seats. My seniority means that I will be considered by many "lucky" to get some non-PSL seats. How lucky is it? Seems at best, I'll be way up high, in the elements, paying 50% more per game. Before getting laid-off I thought about a PSL to stay near where I've been for 30 years. Not now, especially after reading these threads. I guess the real eye-opener to me that I hadn't thought about before, is the fact that once you commit to a PSL, you have no control over where the ticket prices go, and it really makes it easier for them to jack them up. You've already invested. I wonder how it's gone in other PSL cities. Have ticket prices increased at an increasing rate after the PSL? After the WSS died, I NEVER expected the costs to us would be this high. When I got my seats, it cost $77.00 per seat per year. Our four seats where $288.00 for the season. I was a Pathmark cashier in High School working part time and saving for college and I could afford them. Now this. And to think, any of us who have been going to games since 1980 have seen them shut-out twice by the Saints! Anybody remember both of those disasters? This has been a great thread, especially with 17a's picts, but damn it, it's getting me down.
This is the killer. I can tell you from experience that my Mezz seats have doubled in like 5-6 years. There is nothing to stop that from happening once you own the PSL... nothing. But worse than that, you don't even have the option now of walking away. You're stuck but good.
I disagree , there is no reason that this new stadium is costing this ridiculous amount of money, the joint venture of both organizations and the fact they would both get PSL fees allowed them to not really give a shit about costs. Under more close scrutiny the final costs of WSS could just as easily been less, as it could have been 2X more. We will never know. But I think it would hav ended up less. The one true fact is the WSS would have generated an infinite more amount of revenue to the NY metro area via olympics, superbowls etc. Fuck Dolan, Fuck Cablevision, Fuck MSG, Fuck the Giants, Fuck Woody. This whole thing just plain sucks.
It wouldn't effect the Olympics. Nobody would ever expect to find venues in Manhattan for any NY Olympics.
Oh please, less then this stadium, in NY, with those unions and politicians??? SEE NY YANKEE costs buddy. Come on, how can you blame Woody for the WSS. The man spent millions and got dicked over by the NY politicians and thank god or else upper deck seats would have been 5K
While I disagree with your opinion that a WSS would have cost less, I can't argue with the fact that it would have generated more income. In fact, had they built the WSS and domed it, now you're talking some serious revenue.... not only other sporting events but weather-protected concerts, conventions, circuses, rodeos, monster truck races, antique shows, you name it.
I do not blame Woody for the WSS, It is about the only thing he tried to do for the Jets that I do appreciate. I really do not know of any other options he had but anything would have been better than crap especially status quo. Giants Stadium is actually one of the better football venues for fans to actually watch a game. And the NY unions are the same in NJ and pretty much so are the politicians, I just gave an opinion it would have costs less because the final costs would be under closer scrutiny, you cannot compare the Jets to the Yankees who think they can just print their own money and never care abour costs. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but isn't the costs of the Yankee stadium about the same as the Meadowlands one - a little less but both being up their as the most expensive ones in history while Citi Field is being completed for about 500 Billion less proving it can be done for less in NY than the Yankee way.
I've been shouting this ever since talk first started of a new stadium. Why do we need a new stadium? It's always been said "there isn't a bad seat in the house," and it's true. Oh, wait, I forgot. No padded leather seats and 5-star restaurants. No fancy elevators and club "lounges" to watch big-screen TVs. No designated tialgate areas. No freakin' views either. Whoever designed this fucking monstrosity should be shot. The views of the field stink because it's all set way too far back. Unbelievable.
Just got word from the Jets that i will be in section 312 or 314. I wanted the same location as my previous seats in section 111, just in the 3rd level. They said they would try and accomodate me as close as possible, in 312/314. I had isle seatsand one in from the isle, and i will have the same in the new section. All this transpired this morning. Just thought other season ticket holders would like some info.
I didn't know they were actually assigning Upper sections already. I thought that was going to commence in May on the 2nd go-around, after they went through the seniority lists and the PSLs have been sold. This is not in keeping with what I understood was the procedure the Jets were going to follow... but maybe I'm misinformed. Also, did they give you a Row in those sections? Be careful. Until I see my actual exact seats, I'm not going to believe any bullshit coming from them at this point.
I hear that Citi field does not compare to the Yankes and Jets as far as amenities so that's the cost difference plus its a lot smaller. I am sorry if I came off mean, just pissed off about the Upper decks being so high up. Bottom line, the PSL's would have been a lot more if we did not share the place.
