http://cbs5.com/local/raiders.tom.cable.2.927059.html Raiders Keeping Tom Cable As Head Coach ALAMEDA,CA The Oakland Raiders announced the retaining of head coach Tom Cable on Wednesday, officially removing the interim designation from his title more than five weeks after their season ended. Cable went 4-8 after replacing Lane Kiffin with the Raiders (5-11), who have lost at least 11 games in six consecutive years. Cable, Kiffin's former offensive line coach, rallied Oakland to back-to-back victories to end last season. Raiders owner Al Davis interviewed a handful of candidates for the job, but never seemed seriously inclined to replace Cable, valuing his organizational loyalty and leadership. Davis spoke to New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and Green Bay assistant head coach Winston Moss before sticking with Cable, the former Idaho head coach who joined the Raiders in 2007. Cable's hiring, announced at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, brings some stability to a coaching staff that's already undergoing wholesale changes even with Cable staying in charge. Cable, who represented Oakland at the Senior Bowl in Alabama last month, has argued that keeping him would bring stability to a club already on its fifth head coach since 2003. But several key assistant coaches who finished the season under Cable's leadership already have left the Raiders for new jobs, including defensive coordinator Rob Ryan (Cleveland), offensive coordinator Greg Knapp (Seattle), special teams coordinator Brian Schneider (Southern California), running backs coach Tom Rathman (San Francisco) and linebackers coach Don Martindale (Denver). While waiting to announce Cable's hiring, the Raiders filled several positions on the Raiders' new staff, hiring a few new assistants and retaining several others. Oakland notably picked veteran offensive coach Paul Hackett to be JaMarcus Russell's quarterbacks coach. However, Davis said Wednesday that the assistants hired were Cable's choices and all met with his approval. With a head coach finally in place, the Raiders can now get to work hiring coordinators. They're also deep in preparations for the draft, in which they have the seventh overall pick. Cable went 11-35 in four seasons in charge at Idaho from 2000-03 in his only previous experience as a head coach before Davis promoted him to replace Kiffin, who was fired Sept. 30 after a series of embarrassing public disagreements with Davis. Cable spent 2006 as Atlanta's offensive line coach following two years as UCLA's offensive coordinator. The Raiders responded favorably to Cable over the final 12 games of the regular season, pulling together for back-to-back wins over Houston and Tampa Bay to close another dismal year on a high note. Although 5-11 isn't much, Oakland finished with its best record since 2004, when Norv Turner led the Raiders to the same mark. Cable follows Bill Callahan (2002-03), Turner (2004-05), Art Shell (2006) and Kiffin (2007-08) in charge of the Raiders, who haven't had a winning season since Callahan led Oakland to the Super Bowl in his first season after replacing Jon Gruden. Tom Cable is now Oaklands highest paid janitor, what a fucking mess
well in my hastiness to insult raiderjoe and it being 2:47am I made the obvious typo NOW you know im still not as dumb as al davis or anyone who thinks he knows what hes doing. anything other than your typical "special k" pseudo insult to me would be disappointing joe so please use it again.
Well SPECIAL K , Opinions are like arsehole , everyone has one. This writer entitled to his opinion , just like you are SPECIAL K.
like arseholes? did the raiders move to London? his opinion? he reports the facts, the last line in bold was my comment. and thanks for not letting me down with the supposed insult.
Lets look at the real facts. Tom Cable is one of the best Oline coaches around and showed in a short time he is very good playcaller.(GO look up his team(headcoached) in college, how many yards they averaged on offense). There is a reason Why Cable going to keep calling the plays. Now on to the defections on the coaching staff -outside oF Tom rathman And Brian Schneider(special teams- was one of the best units in all of football) there was no one Raiders are going to Miss. Raiders have pretty much kept the same defense staff in place the last five years. They didn't get the job done with alot of talent assembled. It was defintely a time for a change, and it wasn't a supprise they totally cleaned house on defense. They brought in alot OF experienced coaches (old) to work with a very young defense. GRegg Knapp was Just a helper - didn't call the plays for Kiffin. Raiders gave him a couple weeks after Kiffin was released to call the plays. He was horrible. Again Ted Tollner going to fill the same helper role as Knapp. (reason why Saunders wouldn't come to be OC- not going to get chance to call plays) So this Article was supposed to get me angry or something. Well guess Im not as Special as you.
College Tom Cable was the head coach at the University of Idaho, his alma mater from 2000?2003. At Idaho, Cable compiled a record of 11?35 (.239) in four straight losing seasons. Idaho did not renew Cable's contract at the conclusion of the 2003 season, and he was quickly replaced by Nick Holt. Five of Cable's losses at Idaho were to lower Division I-AA schools, while one of his wins was against a I-AA school. I could give a fuck how much yardage the almighty Idaho averaged under him, he was the Head Coach. not the Offensive Coordinator. and how the fuck does any of that correlate to what happens with the Raiders? Cable is the one of the best OL coaches in the league? yes he has such a long history of that also. NFL Cable was the offensive line coach in 2006 for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons under head coach Jim Mora, who was dismissed at the end of the season. Cable spent the 2007 NFL Season as the Oakland Raiders offensive line coach. 4 games in to the 2008 NFL Season Raiders coach Lane Kiffin was fired and Cable was named the interim head coach. The Raiders finished the 2008 season with a 5-11 record. ok........im not trying to make you mad so i dont know why you insinuated that, hell maybe Cable will be a good coach. but as long as Al Davis is alive I'd consider any good moves made by the franchise a wash.and considering few of them are ever made, its funny you do nothing but insult Jets fans and their team then spew out bullshit as if the Raiders have anything to be proud of.
I bet the Raiders will go 12-4 and win the AFC West. Then knock out the Colts, Steelers and Patriots on their way to defeating the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XLIV.
You do know who Alex Gibbs is? Well Cable is a longtime Alex Gibbs disciple. He not only took alex Gibbs philosphy but he built on them with his own ideas. (likes bigger guards thanb his mentor did) Cable is one of the best Oline coachews in the game today . I have extreme confidence that Oline will be a strength in the not too distant future. Once that happenns than look out as REaiders have alot of talent on offense. Two AFc Championships games and one superbowl appearance this decade for the Raiders. Again I will take that as a Raider fan every single decade- even if it means six consecutive seasons of embarrassing football. 1998 was the last time you made it to afc championship . I would worry more about my owner Les Nesman( WKRP IN Cincinati) "aka woody johnson) than worry about AL Davis. Al Davis has a proven track record. Woody Johnson just a rich kid who gets to play with his toys.
Lets put it this way Raiders have a better shot of winning the superbowel than the Jets do. Whose your QB again. We know you don't have a dominating defense so don't start going there.
Tom Cable is a pile of dog turds....you continue to cling on to past Raider success...you make fun of the Jets, knowing full well they're "currently" the superior team to the Raiders...you make shit up on a daily basis...and you do all this, on a Jets Forum. You're either severely retarded, have no friends, or you've been banned from all Raider message boards. I'm going to go with all of the above.
Jets showed how superior they were to the Raiders when they got there Asses handed to them again. Again Yes the jets had a better record than the Raiders last year. Hooray Your no closer to a championship. While raiders were breaking in a youing inexperience QB(going through growing pains) you were going with an experience future Probowl QB. (brett favre) You know how many games your usually talking about (at least four games swing) In the grandscheme of things(Raiders are alot closer to a championship) as our young inexperienced Qb started to come on. Now some else hall of fame Qb gone now, and you're left to try and pick up the pieces with three pieces of Crap at QB. Life is great. BTw - all this Jets sucess. Did i fall asleep. What sucess are we talking about. I looked through all these Afcv Championship games and I haven't found the Jets . So explain please.
we've made the playoffs and have had winning records in the last 6 seasons....are you fucking blind? how did you guys hand us our asses? you beat us with a hail mary FG in overtime....wow, you really stomped us. Brett Favre...retired....is a better option than that walking buffet table you guys have for a QB. enjoy your annual top 10 pick, chump.
Watch that Jet/Raider Game again, they beat the ship out of Brett favre. That beating happen on the streat someone would be going to jail for a longtime. The game never should have even went to overtrime. Jets got lucky . Raiders dominated that game on both sides of the ball. Open your eyes. Go look up Jamarcus Russell stats for that game and compare tho0se to Favre. You were saying. Jets have made the playoffs ONe out of the last three years. Did they make the Afc Championships. AGain this decade Raiders have been to two AFc Championships and one superbowl. Im so0rry but that is alot more impresive than what mediocrity Jets have done. Scoreboard for the slow people. THis decade AFc Championship game 2 for raiders 0 for the Jets Superbowl apearance(thats game where your team plays in) Raiders 1 Jets 0. Fortyone years and Counting. You hit fifty they should take away the franchise.
there is nothing that impresses me about the Raiders...they're garbage....bottom line. The Raiders dominated both sides of the ball?? hahahahahahahaha!!! seriously..just stop. yeah...we've made the playoffs once out of the last 3 years...thanks for making my point. How bout dem Raiders!! what a joke.
HAVE YOU BEEN TO AFC CHAMPIONSHIP OR A SUPERBOWL THIS DECADE. RAIDERS HAVE AND THAT TRUMPS WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. End of arguement . You lose. If you can't figure that out than there really isn't any hope for you. BTw when you get your Butts kicked again in Oakland. you can hate the raiders some more.
The Raiders have more losses than the Lions over the last 5 seasons and the Lions went winless this season. That pretty much trumps everything.
NO bullshit just facts son. Go look it up and discover what we all know as facts. Raiders have been to two AFc Championships 2000 , 2002(could have been three if not for Tuck Game) and one superbowl. (2002) . Jets??????????????????"??????????????????"??????????????????????????? LMAO Only Jet fans would try and make arguement that jet franchise not a joke.
