http://www.jetsdaily.com/2009/02/how-joe-willie-namath-saved-football.html A very good article from L.J. Burgess regarding Namath that he asked me to post on my blog. It's a good read and not too long. Check it out!
The Jets really need a new story. Not that I'm tired of hearing about Joe Namath, but I don't have much of a connection being that I've never seen him play. We need a new SB story for my generation.
We do need a new story - but that was a very good story. Many of us are Jets fans solely because of Joe Namath. I am. I admit that sometimes I wonder if I should honor Joe Willie or curse him for that, but I love the guy. The Jets and then the Mets in '69 were THE sports stories of the late 60's early 70's. I was 7 years old and could not avoid becoming a lifelong fan of both teams no matter what happens.
He made being a NYJ fan from 65 until he was traded most exciting. We have not to this day a player as exciting as he was. Combine him with Sauer/Maynard/Snell/Boozer/Lammons & a terrific OL & we were a joy to watch on O. Naturally the guarantee made JWN a legend
Nice little story through the eyes of someone who got to witness his rise to fame. I was too little to remember Namath at the time, but I got a pretty good idea what he was about reading Mark Kriegel's biography on him. I encourage anyone who hasn't read it to pick it up. Pretty amazing story he had growing up and how he got to be Broadway Joe.
Joe Namath was the Tiger Woods of the New York Jets; he was once in a life time. While in comparison; his career was not as spectacular as Tiger's has been, one has to consider the era. Namath was a marvel; a legend.
To this day; that is what I think of. Like a fool, she did not. Had she, I think she would have gotten even greater pubicity and notariety. She fumbled an important career move if you ask me.
15 years ago she would have been blowing him in the tunnel before the interview. Just think, instead of 'I wanna kisssss yeouu' it would have been 'Yeouuu got pubesss in yer teeth, Sooozy'.
yep--- Joe was famous for Saturday night "activities" when the team hotel was on lockdown.... but he always found a way.
Joe Namath made Bobby Brady cool just by breathing on him. Namath never gets old. Ever. When I met him (by accident) to commemorate 25 yrs. of SB III, it was just before his double knee replacement. He was hurting and hobbling around like a cripple. A sad business. I shook his hand, and didn't wash my hands for three days. I should never have washed them at all.
Pretty much because he was rooted to fail against the much better and classier Colts but Namath pretty much lit it up and won the Jets there first and only super bowl to date as the first big time underdog story in the NFL as well as sports. Namath was the Hero.
can he do this for us before he dies??
