Thank god for Jeff, because I think if those posts by mj2sexay and PTTB would have been back-to-back, my eyes would have just melted out of their sockets and dribbled down my face.
...And this is why I'm glad you aren't running the team. Some of the posts here have just been ridiculous. Unfortunately, the payroll right now is about the same as last year's, so we're done. we basically stayed the same everywhere except the bench and the bullpen, which is nice, but I'm not outrageously confident or anything. We could really use 1 more bat, and while any of the names being discussed would be welcome (beggars can't be choosers), it probably isn't happening.
I'm sorry but the bullpen wasn't the only reason this team failed to make the playoffs again last season. Getting shut down offensively by the Marlins that last series had nothing to do with the bullpen but everything to do with lack depth on the bench. Delgado was a pretty big reason the Mets were in a position to make the playoffs come Sept but quite honestly I have a hard time seeing him putting up MVP type numbers again. I would feel much more confident if they added another everyday bat in the OF. I'd like Dye but I don't think it's possible and if it was I don't think it would happen. I still feel the Mets overpayed for KRod (BTW I wanted a much cheaper Fuentes) although the theft of Putz was fantastic. They may contend but the only way they are serious World Series threats is if Church plays like he did pre injury or they add another bat. They can get by with platoons at 2nd base and catcher but IMO a corner OF with production would help their cause tremendously.
IDK I kindof believe in addition by subtraction and heilmen is gone so we are better right there! So I can't call it a fail. Plus Lowe was over signed, That 60mil is alot of money to atlanta and may keep them from filling other needs for the next 4 years. So it may be good for the Mets.
I agree, but think you could also accomplish that with O hudson at second and see what happends with church. Too bad the concussions ruined his season and maybe his career.
not that the moves we made werent good.....but i really think Derek Lowe would have gotten this team over the hump. If Delgado does not produce....this team is fucked. No way around it. The starting pitching is not improved enough to overlook another decline in offensive production. The Bullpen should be strong....but theres so many question marks on this team right now.
I'm sorry.... my bad I quoted the wrong post. After re-reading your post it is very similar that we have the exact same thoughts. Lets both hope Church can get back to his pre injury self because if he does this team should be good enough to compete with the Phils.
The Mets are never proactive when addressing the needs of the team and I will guarantee that the black hole in the bottom of the lineup will plague us yet again and if Delgado brings out 1st half numbers we will have trouble scoring period, Maine will continue to be the 5 inning pitcher as I doubt that through injury Maine has figured out how to get through innings quicker and our #5 pitcher will be an enigma as well as Perez for that matter. I'd give Minaya a C- for the offseason for doing the bare minimum to improve team
The problem with the Mets this year is that although they have the potential to be one of the better teams in the NL, everything needs to break right in order for that to happen. Delgado needs to be MVP-like again. Church needs to return to pre-concussion form. Murphy needs to continue to improve and Tatis needs to be good. Pelfrey needs to not regress and not break down at the end of this season, the good Ollie needs to show up more often than not, Maine needs to be better than last year, the 5th starter needs to be good enough to make up for the Castillo/Schneider black hole in the offense. I'm sure I'm forgetting some but you get the point. If a very small amount of those don't happen, we're not even sniffing the playoffs this year.
Its has been pretty clear this offseason isn't being run by Minaya, if it was Manny would have been signed weeks ago. Obviously he is working on a strict budget & I can't really blame him for the areas he chose to upgrade & he did a good job targeting those areas and getting the guys he wanted at good prices, all of them. With the potential of the pitching staff & bullpen alone I think this team is certainly capable of making the playoffs but you can't get excited about them until they clinch a playoff spot.
I told you all he's nothing more then a trip to the DL waiting to happen. Thank GOD Omar signed Ollie.
