Orlando Hudson. He's a gold glove second baseman who will probably be heading to the Dodgers if they spend their Manny money elsewhere.
Several points: 1. Marte is not a situational lefty. He is a very good reliever, period. It would be a horrible waste of his talent to use him as such. Go look at his L/R splits (link). He is pretty nasty against righties, too. 2. Name me other teams that have more depth in the bullpen. In fact, go look at the 1998 Yankee roster (link) and tell me who you liked for "depth" in that pen outside of Mo, Nelson, and Lloyd. Aside from those three, it was piecemeal... which is exactly how most good bullpens come together. (And not a very consistent pen, at that. The strength of that dominant 1998 Yankees team was the starting pitching more than the pen.) 3. If Bruney goes down, the Yankees have a slew of in-house options who could prove to be more than servicable. Melancon, Albaladejo, Sanchez, Coke, Robertson, Mitre, Cox, Kontos, to name the big ones. That's eight. And remember who stepped up when the Yanks pen was hurting at the end of 2007? Joba. The Yanks didn't need to trade players to get another arm. 4. The Yanks have spent the past few years stockpiling arms for a reason. And while I could see them trading Swisher or Nady for a prospect or two, I don't see them doing it for a MLB-proven bullpen arm. Why? Because relievers, with a few obvious exceptions, are notoriously inconsistent from year to year. Mike Stanton is good... then he's not. Mendoza puts it together for a year... then falls apart. That's why the best strategy is not to give big money to the potentially inconsistent relievers. It's to have a bunch of power arms in your system... enough that if one guy isn't getting it done, there are two or three more ready to step up.
Is Sanchez finally ready to pitch this year? He was suppose to have starter stuff when he was with Detroit..good starter stuff at that.
I doubt anybody still thought it could happen but Cashman finally put the nail in the coffin on Ramirez coming to NY. I guess he hampered Boras a bit at the same time. http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news...t_id=3796882&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy
I can't believe Manny is going to be out of work. For all his problems, you're talking about one of the best hitters ever to play the game. It amazes me that he's still waiting for someone to call. Omar Minaya announced that he isn't going after Manny too. I'm cool with the Yankees dropping out on him though. I think our lineup is fine. (Not that I would be upset if the Yanks changed their minds and brought him in.)
He has had offers. 3 of them from the Dodgers and turned them all down. If he is out of work he has no one to blame but himself and of course Boras.
Oh I don't disagree with that at all. However, you would have figured that there would have been interest besides just from the Dodgers, you know? We're not talking about Terrell Owens, who has talent but hasn't proven he can win. We're talking about Manny Ramirez, who has the talent, and has shown he can win games with his bat. Maybe teams are finally saying "Enough is enough" with the cancerous personalities in sports?
The Giants are interested but don't have a lot of money. Everybody else looks at what he did for the Dodgers and believe it or not considers that a negative because of what he didn't do for so long in Boston. Really, 1 year deals are good for everybody. He doesn't want it because he knows he will have to play every day.
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2009/02/04/yankees-trade-for-brewers-of/ Chase Wright was DFA'd when Pettitte re-signed, looks like we got a player with some potential in return, albeit a few years away
Of course. But if you were Manny Ramirez you wouldn't settle for a one-year deal either. He definitely made his own bed. It's sad. So much talent wasted. I'm just surprised a team like the Nationals or Orioles hasn't made an attempt at him. Both were willing to mortgage the franchise for the foreseeable future to get Teixiera for the big name, why not Manny? You get the star power to fill the seats you were looking for, and you only need to commit to 3-4 years, rather than a decade. I thought the Mets were the perfect fit for him though. Imagine Manny and Wright hitting back to back? And I'd be lying if I said that some part of me doesn't still want to see Manny light up the Sox in pinstripes.
Nationals don't want him, Yankees don't want him, Mets don't want him. dodgers will get him for a buck 98 or he can retire. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/28985880/
He topped out around 94 in one of his games with the Yanks, but I believe he was hitting 96 in the minors.
That's just sick. A guy who can still drive in 120+ runs has zero interest on the open market, even once all the marquee names are gone. It's amazing the hole he managed to dig himself.
I can't find any sympathy at all for somebody who made 160 million dollars putting in half an effort. Haha..Boras says about the Dodgers "you better watch out when you are playing chicken". No link, just saw it scrolling along the bottom of ESPN.
I'd love to see him in San Fran, knowing the type of player he can be. I could almost see him saying, "Fuck it", and waiting till mid season to sign a pro rated contract with a contender. Then he sets himself up for another ring and for the offseason in a better economy.
Interesting thought Iata, but everyone thought a team needing that one last bat to bolster their offense would go after Bonds at the break and that never happened. The reasons listed, among many, were that most teams don't want the media circus...so if Manny isn't in camp for ST, with his poor attitude, he pulls an Andruw Jones and begins eating and won't play this year. That said, he'll be in a uniform...somewhere...
Well, Manny isn't surrounded by all the steroid hoopla that Barry is/was. And Manny had a much more productive previous season then Barry did.
