The only teams dumb enough to trade a 2nd round pick for Jones are already solid at the RB position. No way we get a 2nd for him. For what we could get for him in a trade, which is probably a 4th round pick, we could probably get more production just keeping him on the roster. He's a great blocker in the backfield and a good check-down, and he's good at following his blocks when the blocks are there. I think that if we gave the ball to Leon more and got a legitimate power runner to add to the stable, we would be fine at RB. Maybe draft one with a 3rd or 4th round pick. Good runningbacks are not as rare as people would think, it's just finding that one elite back like Peterson that is so rare. But last I looked, say, this past Sunday, I don't remember seeing any elite runningbacks on the field.
If you spend all your time trading productive players for crap-shoot draft picks you'll end up with a terrible team. Jones is worth far more to the Jets as a productive running back for two or three more years. There's no way you get a second rounder for him either. Two years ago the Jets only had to trade places in the second round to get him. He would bring a fourth tops, and that's way too much of a risk. We need to hold on to the productive players and slot young talent in around them. Drafting an RB for the future is certainly worth thinking about...
2-3 more years is very optimistic. You can?t rely on a 30 yo RB, these days, that?s the age, when their body starts breaking down. If we don?t think Leon is the Guy, than we should get one this offseason. But I agree with the rest of your statement. And the swap we did to get him equaled a high-mid 3rd on the Valueboard.
somebody does if chris wells, Mccoy, knowshon moreno... are all slated to go in the first round so somebody out there needs a running back.. and every year in the league somebody is looking maybe not a starter but somebody to back up
I know what you're saying, but the value board is a pile of crap. While it is fair to assume that a No.1 pick has more value than a No.2, it isn't carved in stone - many second-rounders outplay many first-rounders. To get to the point of claiming that a difference in places in the second round somehow adds up to an entire other player taken in the third is pure mathematics gone insane. It all depends on who is available and how their careers pan out. There's no absolute value at any position in the draft.
I still like those odds better than finding a superior player in the second round. And I think TJ is good for 2-3 but it's only an opinion of course, based on the wear and tear of his career so far and his physical conditioning.
No, they would not. The Egales could draft a similar style of runner, who's younger and cheaper, with thier secound round pick. Possibly with thier third depending on how the draft breaks down in april. There is not a strong market for any 30+ running back. Ever. If we were offered a second for Jones you do it, but we will not be.
Not to mention the Eagles have 2 late 1st round picks, so they have the flexibility to address that RB concern with either of their 2 picks, as well as save a bundle. Cause if I know Thomas Jones, he would want to re-work his contract with the new team as part of the deal, just like he did with us.
They tried that with Tony Hunt, a guy a lot of people were agitating for on this board, in 2007. He was cut halfway through this past season. Now, I know no one would give up a 2nd for TJ, but I wouldn't underestimate the value of a known quantity vs. an unknown. We are also in a much better position than Chicago was when we got him due to the whole Ced Ben situation.
Beanie Wells could fall to them in the first. He'd be a younger, bigger and a lot less expensive player than TJ.
The initial premise of the post is sound. If we could get a 2nd rounder for TJ, you do it. I'm sure there are teams out there that think a solid 3-5 yard grinder may just put them over the top. Of course it would be a steal on our part. I'd even go with a conditional pick: 0-499 yards - 4th rounder 500-999 yards - 3rd rounder 1000+ yards - 2nd rounder I really like TJ, but we are so accustomed to our "change of pace" guy being the one with breakaway speed. We need a #1 back with some power that can also outrun linebackers if he gets past the first level. TJ just isn't ever going to be that guy.
Tony Hunt was vastly over rated comming out of school and had horrible 40 times for a RB (4.55). Just because that pick sucked does not over look the fact that there are several good back available all the way through the end of the second round almost every year. Hunt was picked 90th. Almost a 4th rounder. There was a good reason he fell that far. If the Eagles used one of thier high picks this year chances are they get a much better player then Hunt. Giving up a 2nd for a year or two of a very effictive Thomas Jones would not be worth the cost. Not When by all accounts Jones is not going to be the main back in thier offense. That role would still belong to Westbrook. They would be much better served bringing in a young back who can take some % of the snaps now and take over the mian role in a few years.
You really want trust the Jets to draft a feature running back in the first round? Cough cough Blair Thomas cough cough.....
If the jets could somehow swing a 2nd round pick for TJ then i would love to see it. This draft is stacked with running backs and the jets could easily replace TJ with that 2nd round pick. One back that seems to be flying under everyones radar is Donald Brown from the Con. Guy was a beast for the huskies this year even when teams were stacking 8 in the box when lorenzen got hurt in the 4th week. He is the same type of back as TJ with the ability of the homerun. This is what he did this year 367 touches 2083 yards 5.7 avg 18 TD. He will most likely fall to the jets at 53. I would even be for the trade if they got a 3rd round pick for TJ as long as they snag up this beast.
