This was exactly Omars thing in bring in Moises Alou. It was a one year deal for 7.5 million with a club option for a 2nd. Alou hit .301 with 77 RBI and 20something HR the year before. Then it blew up in Omars face. Enough with the bullshit one year stop gap player and get somebody in here who's going to be a long term starter. I'm more then willing to wait for that to either emerge for the minors or arrive via trade. Right now there is nobody in Free Agency who is anything more then a stop gap and we've had a stop gap out there for as long as I can remember. Why? He's a great clubhouse guy and nobody is expecting him to carry the load anymore. He still knows how to pitch and I think you can probably get 10-15 wins out of him if he stays healthy. If he isn't effective then you sit him down and bring up one of the kids. I think Pedro understands where he is with his career right now, and nothing wrong with him as a 5th start. This all hinges on getting Ollie (or even Sheets).
Alou was a much more known injury risk then Abreu. Abreu has proven to be quite durable. And who are you going to get at this point that wouldnt be more then a stop gap? At least next year you can prepare yourself for a possible big offer to Holliday.
Why spend money on a guy whos gonna be 30 and looking for a long term deal when we can bring up Fernando Martinez who will be 21. You wanna get guys on their way UP not on their way DOWN. If you're on the wrong side of 30 then you're on your way down. We don't need anybody for this year unless Murphy plays terrible and Tatis isint himself coming off his shoulder injury. Then you look to make a trade. I have no qualms trading Martinez for the right guy. If Lastings Milledge was still with the Mets we wouldent even be having this converstaion. He hasent been what he was suposted to be so far, but i'm sure the Mets would have him as a starter if he still was the team.
Look at Abreu's numbers the last 2 years when he isn't playing in a stadium with a little league RF fence. That's more than likely what the Mets would be getting and he's not worth it.
Martinez has been injury prone and to my knowledge hasn't even played triple A ball yet. Plus he's only 20 and won't turn 21 until the end of next season. How about letting him fill out and get a handle on AAA pitching and being healthy and then think about him AT THE EARLIEST as a mid-season call up. If anything Martinez potentially being ready NEXT year, makes MORE sense for signing a Dunn or Abreu to a one year deal although as I've made known I think Abreu makes more sense. And as far as Tatis. What is he? How do you know he wasnt playing completely over his head considering he was in the Mexican League as early as last year? You mean to tell me the Phillies went out and got Raul Ibanez to replace Burrell and your going to counter in your outfield with Fernando Tatis? Ewww. Lastings Milledge? I mean he's not even on the team so he's not an option but what did he hit last year? .265? Ok so maybe he gets up to .280 20 75-80 this year. Not bad. But who cares you guys traded him for Church and Schneider.
Lastings Milledge is a god among men, then mets never should have let him go. http://milledgefacts.blogspot.com/
A god among men? He had 14 hrs. and 61 rbis. Want to compare that to David Wright, Carlos Delgado, and Carlos Beltran?
Considering it was his 1st full season and he played for a team that nearly lost 100 games those aren't terrible numbers. I'd take him on the Mets over Ryan Church right now for a variety of reasons.
Milledge would be starting in RF for us right now. He'll never be the 300-25-90-25 player we thought he could, but he should be a 280-20-80-30 guy annually.
So Buster Olney is reporting that the Mets will either sign Ollie or Abreu, at least that's how I took it. His report on ESPN News was that Should the Mets not sign Oliver Perez, they will look to sign Bobby Abreu to a 1 year deal. I don't see how the 2 are connected. What does Ollie have to do with a corner OF? All of a sudden the Mets are cash strapped. What I wanted to hear Olney say was that the Mets are talking to Boras about Manny and plan on signing Ollie as early as Monday but I don't hear either of those things.
jesus, why dont they just break out some of that citi bank blood money that they recieved for the stadium. We have to money to get Ollie, Sheets and Abreu. Why are they being so cheap?
Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News estimates the Mets payroll to be $135MM this season, before Freddy Garcia or the $2.25MM owed to Willy Randolph.
It's sad but that's chump change compared to what their cross town rivals will spend this year. I guess it could be worse. Thanks to the economy teams like Pittsburgh and Kansas City have a built in excuse when they lose 100 games. On the bright side maybe Cuban will finally be able to buy the Pirates because they'll lose so much money. Unfortunately those cheap fucks the Glass family will never sell the Royals. Go back to Arkansas and manage your Wal Marts but stay the hell away from MLB.
went to flushing on saturday with the kids and took pictures of whats left of shea and citi field. they need to just wipe that mechanicville right off the face of the map.you have this beautiful stadium and 30 feet away is unpaved roads, wild dogs roaming the streets and chop shops.they need to get bars and restaurants there.
If the Mets sign a cheaper alternative to Oliver Perez, they may consider making an offer to Abreu. thats what buster said.
Met fans: I've said it for the past week and I'll continue to drive the point home. Abreu to the Mets on a one year deal makes such a rediculous amount of sense it's mind boggling that it won't get done.
