Just think about all the coaches that got Head coaching positions solely based on being part of super bowl team or a strong consistent position area. By the Numbers rex is a keeper. This doesn?t actually translate into a Good Head coach, but Lets have some patience and see what the Guys got!
I don't think I've seen anyone claim he is already a great head coach. I've seen people optimistic about his ability and enthused about his attitude and approach. I'm not sure how you can mistake that for claims that he is already great.
I know that Sutton is still here, but he has been demoted, and most would consider that paying a price. This is Schottenheimer's last year with the Jets beyond any doubt. If the offense is good he gets a head coach position somewhere, and if the offense is crappy, not only will he be fired, but his chances of getting a HC position elsewhere will drop dramatically, and you'd have to think that he would even have trouble getting another OC position for a while. I don't know if he is any good or not, but there is no question that Schottenheimer will be highly motivated this year - more than any of the other coaches, in fact. That can only be a good thing, and makes him coming back more palatable.
To follow in the sentiment of many on this board, his track record on defense is what excites me, and to a lesser extend the way in which he carries himself to the team. When have the Jets ever had any sort of swagger aside from maybe 98?
Exactly and he will hold players accountable, wich is way more than Manweanie ever did. He will fire players up and that is also a huge plus.
#1 jets fan you obviously arent a true jet fan.if you were you would of known that our only superbowl came with buddy ryan as coach.and yes you guessed it ,rex ryans father is coincidentally him
The more I think about how Ryan has been handling the situation with Schott, the more I like it. I did not start out wanting Schott to stay, but Ryan will want to focus more with his own time on the D, I would think. Meanwhile I have to assume keeping Schott was a good idea for a transition not only if they wanted to bring Favre back but also alternatively to handle a transition to Clemens if Favre does not. The logic of Ryan's move will start being seen if: No Qb competition is announced. Favre either comes back and is happy to work with Schott or Schott and Ryan name Clemens the starter. No high picks are used on a Qb as they are needed to fill CB, WR and Safety. So, let's see what happens.
I think REX will be a very good coach because he has an identity. He is a defensive minded coach for a team that really wasn't terrible on defense last season. He is known to get every little last drop out of his players including his backups. He has a lot of experience in the NFL. As a first time HC that is invaluable. All this along with Big Jenks and the rest of the defense understanding their positions better bodes well on that side of the ball. Yes, there are great players on the Ravens defense but I believe those schemes had a lot to do with why they were great.
Stats, I read somewhere that Schotty signed an extension. I would imagine that's the price he demanded to come back. That Sutton was demoted while Mangini was fired just doesn't seem like justice to me. Sutton's defense flat out sucked but Mangini walked the plank. Schotts's offensive planning was good for 400+ points but I just don't think it merited an extension. You're spot on about this year being Schott or get off the pott. He's not working with an 4-12 schedule next year and although we beat NE and TENN, I'm more inclined to believe those games were aberrations rather than what this team really is capable of. Lets see what Brainiac can do this year with the offense since Mangini won't "handcuff" his planning Farve or no Farve.
You won't get any argument from me about it being time for Schott to put up or shut up. I admit that this requirement coaches seem to have about always having a year on their contract beyond the current one is a mystery to me. There seems to be this idea that a coach can't coach as a lame duck, and that makes no sense to me, especially for an offensive coordinator. I would have told him that the team wanted him back and left it at that. He wouldn't quit - if he does that he gets no money and he can't work in the NFL until the contract is up. He also wouldn't deliberately do a bad job to "punish" the Jets, since then he wouldn't get a good job after the year was over. The risk that the Jets offense will be great and no team will want him as a head coach and he'd go somewhere else as an offensive coordinator doesn't seem big enough to me to warant an extension.
I hate to disagree but... The Penguin had man boobs too. So does Crennel. And Charlie Weis. It's hereditary in the Parcells family tree. (Bellichick must take after the mother's side).
You are mistaken about Mangini and Kotite. They had been Jets assistants before becoming the head coach. Each one was a Jets assistant, then moved on to another team, and then came back to the Jets as head coach years later.
What about Walt Michaels? And as Cakes pointed out Kotite and Mangini were both Jets assistants before leaving then coming back. Rex Ryan has never even coached for the Jets
I think people are just excited. Nothing wrong with that. He very well could be a bust as a head coach and 3 years from now we could be looking back at all the things he said in his first PC and laughing at it. But we dont know right now. I dont think people are declaring him a great coach. I just think that people are excited about him coming here.
He seemed to be the best choice with the most potential. No one thinks he's guaranteed to be great. So far, I like his attitude and his confidence. I think we all do. I'm a lifer as far as the Jets go, but at this point, I say each guy gets three years, and after three years if we can't wait for year four, then make a change. That's just what we did, and no one can complain about the choice.
